Exploring Veliko Tarnovo | Old Capital of Bulgaria 🇧🇬

After staying for a while in Sofia I made a move to Veliko Tarnovo and had a full day exploring this city !! Very unique city with super deep history just excited me wherever I was in the city. The fortress was probably the biggest I've visited and loved it. Need to be back for the light and sound show on one of the national holidays. If in Bulgaria, definitely come and check this city out !!

Hello, I'm Timothy James ( Half Japanese, half British ) and I'm 19 years old. I'm currently on a big journey through the balkans heading to wherever I feel like going ! The reason I travel apart from just the fact that is fun is because it is the best education for me and I learn so much from it. Not just the history and about the places I visit but mainly from the people I meet. I can't explain how much I love meeting new people and widening my world. And I though it would be amazing if I could share that with people... That's why I'm here documenting my journey !!
Subscribe and let's have a crazy journey !!

4K Town of Sredets from above

#DiscoverBulgaria #Sredets #aerial #Bulgaria #travel

Sredets (Bulgarian: Средец [srɛˈdɛt͡s]) is a town in Burgas Province in southeastern Bulgaria. It is located near Lake Mandrensko and the northern slopes of Strandzha. Sredets is the administrative centre of Sredets Municipality.

Sredets Point on Smith Island, Antarctica is named after the town.

The Roman fortress of Kaleto, located 2 km southwest of Sredets, was constructed at the end of the fifth and beginning of sixth century AD. Under the First Bulgarian Empire, the fortress became known as Potamukastel (Bulgarian: Потамукастел). Potamukastel was destroyed in the 11th century, but later rebuilt in the 12th century AD. The fortress was abandoned during Ottoman rule of Bulgaria, and the population of Potamukastel resettled at the location of the modern town and founded the village of Karabunar (Bulgarian: Карабунар) (black well in Turkish).

Karabunar is first mentioned in 1595, and is later found in Ottoman tax registers from 1676–1731. King Charles XII of Sweden is known to have stayed overnight in the village in 1713 en route to Constantinople and St. Sophronius of Vratsa worked as a teacher in Karabunar in 1792–1793. Russian Army data from 1827 mentions it as a purely Bulgarian village and it was visited by Vasil Levski in 1868. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78, the area was occupied by the Russian 93rd Irkutsk Infantry Regiment on 16 February 1878. Karabunar became part of the autonomous province of Eastern Rumelia after the war and was annexed by the Principality of Bulgaria in 1885.

The village was renamed Sredets on 14 August 1934. Under Communist rule, the village was renamed Grudovo on 1 June 1950 in honour of Todor Grudov, a leader of the Communist September Uprising of 1923 and former mayor of the village. Grudovo was granted the status of town on 6 February 1960 and, following the fall of Communism in Bulgaria, on 23 January 1993, the town was renamed Sredets.

Bulgaria, Pavlikeni, Ancient Ceramic Center | TURISTHUB

**THE COMPLEX**
In 1971, in the area of Varbovski livadi, 5 km northwest of the modern town of Pavlikeni, a furnace for firing household ceramics from the Roman era was discovered. During the archaeological excavations that began the same year, a total of 8 kilns were found - 4 for construction and 4 for household ceramics. In the first archaeological summer, parts of an architectural complex from the same era were discovered. The archaeological site, located on an area of approximately 9900 sq.m., has several sectors. The best studied and exposed is the central sector, where a villa from the Roman era was discovered (t .the so-called villa rustica), created at the end of the 1st century AD. and existed until the second half of the 3rd century AD.

**HISTORY**
The architectural complex near Pavlikeni was created at the end of the 1st century AD, even before the foundation of Nicopolis ad Istrum after the Dacian Wars of Emperor Trajan. At that time, a military camp was already built in Nove (near the modern town of Svishtov), in which the 1st Italian Legion was stationed. After being discharged from military service, some of the soldiers returned to their native places, but others remained in the region and settled in the fertile valley of the Rositsa River. This is probably how the villa near Pavlikeni, one of the many in the region, appeared.

Veliko Tarnovo Is A Must See City If You Visit Bulgaria

Veliko Tarnovo is a must-see city If you travel to Bulgaria and for good reason, Veliko Tarnovo is one of the most beautiful cities in Bulgaria. Located on the Yantra River, which forms a horseshoe around the city, Veliko Tarnovo is a picturesque destination. On three hills, the tallest of which is called Tsarevets and is home to a massive historic fortress, the city was founded in the 13th century. Veliko Tarnovo is considered one of Bulgaria's most beautiful cities because of its unique architecture, Old World charm, and status as the former capital of the Bulgarian Empire. Visiting Veliko Tarnovo from Sofia would be a long and exhausting day trip but is possible. A minimum of one night's stay is recommended, but more is even better. Choose from a wide range of hostels, some of which offer a free vegetarian dinner and breakfast, or a guesthouse if you'd prefer.
Travelling by bus is the easiest (and probably fastest) way to get to Veliko Tarnovo. Almost every hour, buses leave Sofia. Veliko Tarnovo is about 3 hours away from Sofia. From Varna, the bus service is the same. From Plovdiv and Burgas, there are buses that run, but they aren't as frequent as those from Sofia and Varna.
