5 Crucial Things to Know Before Going Sightseeing in Palermo

Hi Nico here!

Palermo, like a beautiful rose, has some stinging characteristics that you need to know so you can come back from your trip with stories to share instead of a collection of swear words.

Let’s see these 5 thorns you should be aware of:

1. Our cultural heritage is overwhelming
2. Information panels are non-existent
3. Websites like Wikipedia don’t help
4. The staff is never helpful
5. Don’t completely trust an attraction’s opening hours

____________

If we haven't met yet, I'm Nico. I'm 100% pure-bred Sicilian

It's our first time in Sicily, Italy! We're exploring Sicily's capital city of Palermo and letting you know what we think. This is our first impressions of Palermo. We're finding the best things to do in the city.

We start things of in the neighbourhood of Politeama in front of the beautiful Teatro Politeama Garibaldi. We then make our way down the pedestrian shopping street of Via Maquada.

While there we stopped at a well known spot called Ke Palle to try their Arancina (fried rice balls).

We then continued walking where we came upon Quattro Canti (four corners), one of the most photographed places in Palermo. Afterwards we visit the outside of the Palermo Cathedral and the Royal Palace of Palermo or Norman Palace.

We pick things up the next day when we take the bus to the main beach in Palermo, Mondello. Things do not go as planned. We went on a Monday thinking it would be much quieter than the weekend, but the beach was absolutely packed and there was no space left and all the beach clubs were entirely sold out. We stop for a coffee and beer and then leave.

Back at our B&B in Palermo we give a quick tour. To book this B&B:

Afterwards we head back out into the city for an aperativo and have an Aperol spritz.

5 Things American Tourists Shouldn't Wear in Europe

Grab some of our gear

Please Note: Young People Wear Many of These Styles Throughout Europe. These tips are geared toward 35+ year old travelers. Thanks for watching!

Grab a Wolters World Shirt

Heading to Europe & Not Sure What to Pack? Here are a few things that my fellow US travelers may want to avoid packing if they are traveling to Europe.
1. Baseball Caps: Europeans in general do not wear baseball caps, especially backwards. You would be better served to wear a more traditional hat. You will see an occasional NY Yankee hat, but why not buy the fancy hat you always wanted instead?
2. Athletic Wear: Europeans tend to wear athletic wear to do sports, not to wear around town. There is a trend of more athleisurewear in Europe, but it is not to the extent that there is in US.
3. Khakis: the omnipresent US male pant choice is not something you will see too often in Europe. Go for colored pants or jeans. If you want khaki like pants wear Chinos instead of Dockers. The pants you will see are a thinner cut or skinnier fit than in the US.
4. Oversized US University Sweatshirts.
5. Sport Shoes or High Heals: US sport shoes and white socks are not quite as popular in Europe as they are in the US. You may be better off with Urban Street shoes like Vans instead. Also, women should be careful with high heels as with all the cobblestone it is easy to hurt your ankles.

We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.

We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.

Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.

Want to grab some great gear? We have used Osprey Packs for years & swear by them. Check them out here

Need some clothing for your next adventure? Patagonia has some pretty good stuff for all kinds of travelers.

ABOUT US
At age 50 we left our jobs, sold most of our belongings, and decided to follow our dream of international travel for seven to nine months a year. Our goal is not to visit the most countries or see the most sites in a short amount of time, but to spend several months in each county that we visit, becoming immersed in the local area. When not traveling internationally, we hope to spend time visiting various beaches, cities, and national parks across the United States. We will show not only where we are going and what we are doing, but also provide practical advice on how to travel and explore on a reasonable budget in a relaxed and leisurely manner. Follow along as we figure out how to navigate our early retirement and semi-nomadic life.

About us video -

PALERMO, Sicily; walking guide.

Between Eastern Med and Western Med routes, Palermo sits at the foot of Monte Pellegrino at the heart of a large natural harbour, offering a complex history.

The title of Capital of Culture is well deserved because it has hosted dozens of civilisations: Arab, Greek, Roman, Norman, Carthaginians, Goths, the Byzantine Empire, and even the Spanish have a footprint in the architectural mix.

Whilst there is more than enough to do for a long stay, there are some obvious must-see attractions that the day visitor will probably aim for. Jean takes us around a few key areas in this huge historic city. Obviously, she covers the Cathedral although this is the feature of its own film. The old city gates, the No Mafia Museum next to the tourist centre, and the church with a bakery that sells beer for a rest in the garden. She finds the biggest opera house in the whole of Italy, The Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele. It is located on the Piazza Verdi to the right of the main street. Markets are easy to find on the way here. Jean also walks around the Catedral museum.

The history of Palermo can be confusing as it is told in a few ways, by each of the groups. The cathedral has been a church and a mosque like so many religious buildings in the Mediterranean. The cathedral offers different tickets to include what you wish to do. Do you want the roof view, the museum, or access-all-areas? The view from the roof is a hard climb and a narrow stairway. The walk down to see the sarcophagus of the bishops in the basement also has many steps and some access is very narrow.

The Pope's agent Roger II lies on the main floor of the cathedral. The museum which can be on the same ticket offers a wealth of religious artefacts and is in adjacent buildings.
