10 Most Amazing Mayan Ruins - Travel Video

For almost a millennium, the ancient ruins of great architecture lay buried beneath the jungle vegetation on the Yucatan Peninsula. Abandoned by their creators these ancient temples and pyramids are a stunning reminder of a powerful civilization that once ruled the people of Central America. Although the accomplishments of the ancient Mayans are astonishing, no city would escape the inevitable collapse. One by one they were swallowed by the rainforest leaving the amazing Mayan ruins hidden, waiting to be discovered.

Palenque Mexico - The Secret Ancient Mayan Ruins of Mexico 🇲🇽

Welcome to the ancient Mayan ruins of Palenque, Mexico! In this Mexico Travel Vlog I will be taking you with me as I explore the secret ancient Mayan Ruins of Mexico. The ruins of Palenque are located in Chiapas, Mexico and I believe are one of Mexico’s best kept secrets and a true hidden gem of Mexico. These Mayan ruins are truly spectacular and are far less crowded than the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza in Yucatan, Mexico. Although getting to Palenque Mexico is quite the trek, it is well worth the effort!

After traveling for over 6 hours from San Cristobal de las Casas to Palenque, Chiapas, I start off the day showing you the incredible jungle oasis that we got to call home during our 3 days in Palenque Mexico. After roaming the incredible grounds, it was time to visit the Palenque Ruins (Ruinas de Palenque México). When you first walk into the ancient Mayan ruins of Palenque, you are greeted with the Temple of Inscriptions (Templo de las Inscripciones), which is the most famous temple among the ruins. It is a huge pyramid-like structure that is absolutely incredible to marvel at. There are tons of ruins and temples scattered all around the ruins of Palenque with so much greenery and trees surrounding the magical temples. It is believed that only about 10% of the Palenque ruins have been excavated and that many temples still remain buried in the jungle of Palenque.

After exploring the incredible Mayan ruins of Palenque, we took a guided tour through the Palenque forest. The forest of Palenque is located on the other side of the park and is a great place to learn more about the history of Palenque, discover hidden temples, and watch birds and monkeys in their natural habitats.

Next, we went into the city of Palenque, which is one of Mexico’s magical towns (pueblos mágicos). In Palenque city, we walked around and got some delicious dinner before heading back to our accommodation.

I can honestly say that these ancient ruins are well worth the journey and I would highly recommend you visit the famous Palenque ruins if you get the chance!

Palenque Mexico: Waterfalls, Monkeys and Mayan Ruins | Travel Docs Episode 03 | Palenque, Mexico

The Palenque Mayan Ruins (Mexico) are located in the north of Chiapas, close to the city of Palenque. Their ancient temples are hidden deep within the Mexican jungle and it is one of the most important Mayan ruins sites in Mexico.

During our stay in Palenque we have visited multiple incredible locations that were worth documenting. In the video you can find the amazing blue waterfalls at Roberto Barrios, where you can go for a refreshing dive within the beautiful jungle that Mexico offers. These stunning cascades aren't controlled by the Mexican gouvernment but still belong to the indeginous people of the area.

Another awesome place worth mentioning is Casa Bambutan, a cute place with jungle type bungalows that we had found on booking.com. We had read somewhere that you could see howler monkeys there, but we had never expected to see them the way we did. It was such an amazing experience! 2 times a day, you will hear to very impressive sound of these howler monkeys travel through the jungle. It is amazing!

In case you will visit Palenque (or Mexico in general), we would highly recommend you to go and visit the Mayan Ruins and the amazing waterfalls at Roberto Barrios. And of course check if you will see some wild monkeys, it is magical!

PALENQUE, Chiapas... Is it safe again?

DO NOT let my video scare you from Palenque! Catch Karen's video to see a softer expression:

I was recently able to take a day trip to Palenque, Chiapas, as well as Agua Azul and while the destinations were pretty amazing, the journey to and from was less than impressive!

In this video, I'll discuss some of the nuances of living in Chiapas and things to consider when traveling here.

Winding, mountain roads that lead to getting car sick
Various communities that are frequently blockading the roads
and the local populations around Palenque who are looking for things to steal... and maybe worse!

I'll mention two very specific incidents from January 2022 in Oxchuc, Chiapas that opened my eyes to some of the dangers here.

Palenque, Mexico 4K

Palenque is a journey into the history and mysticism of the Mayan Culture where the majesty of its ceremonial centers still echoes from the past. The ancient city of Palenque, which the Mayan built as the village that serves as a starting point to explore the natural wonders, is in the North of Chiapas.
A road framed by waterfalls, leads South to the archaeological zone of Toniná. If you head Southeast, passing through the famous Lacandona Jungle, you will find the remnants of two majestic pre-Hispanic cities: Bonampak and Yaxchilán.
Coming here means placing yourself inside the heart of the magnificent Lacandona Jungle, where you’ll experience the sound, smell, and the out-of-this-world-feeling of being inside the jungle, a real jungle, where you’ll be welcome by the howling of Saraguato monkeys and the footprints of the legendary jaguar; continuing to a refreshing and purifying swim in any of the many crystal-clear turquoise waterfalls you will encounter along the road. No wonder why Palenque, the Mayan jungle, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987.
