Palazzolo Acreide is a town and comune in the Province of Syracuse, Sicily. It is 43 kilometres from the city of Syracuse in the Hyblean Mountains.
Palazzolo Acreide (9204 inhabitants, 670 metres above sea level) stands on the eastern side of Acremonte.
This place was choosen by the Siculi to build their own village around the 12th century B.C., before the Syracusans discovered and esteemed it.

The first historical news of Palazzolo Acreide current you have from the XII century. The medieval center was erected close to the ancient Acre, on a small rocky outcrop below, in a strategic position of control over the territory and the roads, Là where once stood a palatium imperial, which has given the name of the new village: Palatiolum. Here a castle was erected by the Normans. From 1104 it avvicendarono in Palazzolo different baronie: from Guilfredo son of Count Ruggero to Artale d'Alagona, to finish the principles Ruffo di Calabria. In the XIII-XIV century the demographic increase determinationò expansion of the town in the surrounding area. Destroyed by the earthquake of 1693, the cityà it was rebuilt in part on the original structures of the medieval quarter and in part around the actual main course. In the XVII century the palazzolesi rebelled to feudalism until in 1812 Palazzolo was recognized as a country demaniale. The Iblei Mountains and the valley of’Anapo are natural and evocative setting to the territory of Palazzolo Acreide.

🔴 The cult and the tradition
The Feast of San Sebastiano has been registered in the Register of Intangible Heritage
of Local Interest (REIL) according to the principles established by UNESCO.
In the province of Syracuse, the cult of St. Sebastian chosen by the church as depulsor pestis and defender of the faith dates back to before 1414, the year in which a miraculous simulacrum of the saint landed in Melilli. Starting from that year, the cult of St. Sebastian spread in an extraordinary way throughout the Hyblaean area and was further consolidated throughout Sicily. In Palazzolo, the great devotion to this saint is very ancient, as the chapel dedicated to him, which has existed since the 15th century, in the church of the Annunziata attests. The feast, set for the anniversary of January 20, the day of his martyrology, is repeated in Palazzolo on August 10, with the same great devotion, yes, but with an audience, spectacular spectacle and exceptional folklore. The summer festival of San Sebastiano replaced that of the Madonna Odigitria which in 1712 had been set for 10 August. This strategic day and month were chosen both because they gave certainty of ideal weather conditions and because they coincided with the epilogue of the agricultural year, that is to say with the time of the wheat harvest and therefore alms and more conspicuous offers in the city and in the countryside. Later, with the phenomenon of emigration, this period also coincided with the return home of the emigrants and therefore with the summer holidays. Today, to the centuries-old traditions that distinguish the festival, new rites and new initiatives have been added that have contributed to giving more prestige and greater resonance to the event that has extended its borders on a national level.
