TALLINN, Estonia - One Of The Most Beautiful Cities In The World!

Here are some of the short film snippets I took with my digi camera and phone, merged together to make one ten-minute video showing just some of the highlights of what, to me, is one of the most gorgeous cities on the planet, Estonia's beautiful capital city Tallinn (there's no commentary or music added - I wouldn't even know how to add that - just the sights and sounds of the city!) I absolutely love Tallinn and hope to return when I'm able. These clips are mostly from my stay there in March 2019, with just a few clips from my first (quick) visit there last September (2018). Tallinn is such a clean, laid back, relaxing city to visit. It's easy to see the old town on foot (although those old cobbled streets can be a bit tough on your feet!) but there are lots of buses and trams to travel around other parts of the city easily.

Tallinn really has everything - a gorgeous medieval walled town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) that is like something out of a fairy tale, along with very modern quarters with all the big stores, a large ferry port which is great to watch all the ferries coming and going from (you can take ferry daytrips to Helsinki). It has a zoo that is really cheap to visit (check out their new polar bear exhibit), wonderful castles and palaces (Tsarina Catherine's Kadriorg Palace is a must), excellent museums, tasty food, cheap, efficient transport systems, lots of great value hotels and the most gorgeous cakes I've ever eaten!!

There's such a range of differing architectural styles, from it's medieval days, with such beautiful Gothic and Baroque buildings everywhere, various remnants from it's Soviet occupation days and all the great modern buildings since the Iron Curtain fell. Plus, lots of those gorgeous quaint wooden houses you see all across the Baltic States. They're so pretty!

The nearby beach suburb of Pirita is also a must. A gorgeous soft sandy beach, beautiful woodlands and lovely marina.

Anyway, if you get the chance to go to Tallinn please do, you'll love it, I assure you! There is much more to Tallinn than I've included here, I just didn't get around to filming it all (I just took pics in some places). I also visited other towns around Estonia, like Haapsalu, Pärnu and Narva, which are all lovely, fascinating places. There's still plenty more I want to see in this great country, should I get the chance to return. :)

Maardu is small but a likable city close to Tallinn. I was positively surprised by the wide pedestrian paths, many trees, green areas, and children's playgrounds.

Steel giant! Tahkuna lighthouse. Located on Hiiumaa island in 🇪🇪 Estonia

The Tahkuna peninsula at the northern tip of Hiiumaa is the site of Estonia's tallest cast-iron lighthouse. The 43-meter high, state-of-the-art white tower with a green cupola was assembled in 1875 from parts manufactured in France. The slender, distinctively square-patterned lighthouse's various floors host exhibitions and installations, and the facility is used for theater performances and concerts. The lantern room and balcony are accessible via an elegant, characteristically French spiral staircase. A seaside hiking trail leads from the lighthouse to another landmark, the Tahkuna greatstone, and onwards into primal forest. Smart benches provide an overview of the lighthouse's history, the local nature, military heritage, and seafaring traditions.
At the foot of the tower is a café and souvenir shop.

With the completion of the St Petersburg-Paldiski railroad, the importance of local ports increased, so lighthouses that helped improve navigation in the Gulf of Finland were prioritized. Designs for Tahkuna were drawn up at the same time as the Ristna beacon, and together they were meant to mark the Hiiu shallows. The tower's square-pattern look is due to its cast-iron construction, with specially shaped parts that cover joints in such a way as to keep moisture out of the interior. Cast-iron towers did not require buttressing, and rested on their own weight. The cast-iron modular tower was developed by English engineer Alexander Gordon, and his building method – first introduced at a Jamaican lighthouse in 1841 – quickly gained fame.

The Tahkuna lighthouse is well-preserved. Only the prismatic glass of the dioptric light source, damaged in WWI, was replaced with optical lenses ordered from England in 1920.
The Tahkuna compound gives a good overview of the lifestyle at a shore-side lighthouse. Surviving outbuildings include a sauna from the second half of the 19th century, a stone kerosene store, a cellar, and a 20th century wooden residence and generator building.

map of Estonia [ eesti kaart ]

Estonia (Estonian: Eesti [ˈeːsʲti] (audio speaker iconlisten)), officially the Republic of Estonia (Estonian: Eesti Vabariik), is a country in northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by the Gulf of Finland across from Finland, to the west by the Baltic Sea across from Sweden, to the south by Latvia, and to the east by Lake Peipus and Russia. The territory of Estonia consists of the mainland, the larger islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, and over 2,200 other islands and islets on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea,[9] covering a total area of 47 549 KM². The capital city Tallinn and Tartu are the two largest urban areas of the country. The Estonian language is the autochthonous and the official language of Estonia; it is the first language of the majority of its people, as well as the world's second most spoken Finnic language.

The land of what is now modern Estonia has been inhabited by humans since at least 9,000 BC. Ancient Estonians were one of the last pagan civilisations in Europe to adopt Christianity following the Papal-sanctioned Livonian Crusade in the 13th century. After centuries of successive rule by the Teutonic Order, Denmark, Sweden, and the Russian Empire, a distinct Estonian national identity began to emerge in the mid-19th century. This culminated in the 24 February 1918 Estonian Declaration of Independence from the then warring Russian and German Empires, and, after the end of World War I, in the 1918–1920 War of Independence where Estonians were able to repel the Bolshevik Russian invasion and successfully defended their newborn freedom. Democratic throughout most of the interwar period, Estonia declared neutrality at the outbreak of World War II, however the country was repeatedly contested, invaded and occupied, first by Stalinist Soviet Union in 1940, then by Nazi Germany in 1941, and ultimately reoccupied in 1944 by, and annexed into, the USSR as an administrative subunit (Estonian SSR). After the loss of its de facto independence to the Soviet Union, Estonia's de jure state continuity was preserved by diplomatic representatives and the government-in-exile. Following the bloodless Estonian Singing Revolution of 1988–1990, the nation's de facto independence was restored on 20 August 1991.

Estonia is a developed country, with a high-income advanced economy; ranking very high in the Human Development Index. The sovereign state of Estonia is a democratic unitary parliamentary republic, it is administratively subdivided into 15 maakond (counties). It has a population of 1.3 million, and is one of the least populous members of the European Union, the Eurozone, the OECD, the Schengen Area, and NATO. Estonia has consistently ranked highly in international rankings for quality of life, education, digitalization of public services and the prevalence of technology companies Tallinn Harju 434,562 11 Sillamäe Ida-Viru 12,719

Average elevation reaches only 50 metres (164 ft) and the country's highest point is the Suur Munamägi in the southeast at 318 metres (1,043 ft). There are 3,794 kilometres (2,357 mi) of coastline marked by numerous bays, straits, and inlets. Estonia's number of islands and islets in the Baltic Sea is estimated at some 2,222, and the country has 2,355 including those in lakes. Two of them are large enough to constitute separate counties: Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.[158][159] A small, recent cluster of meteorite craters, the largest of which is called Kaali is found on Saaremaa, Estonia.

Estonia has over 1,400 lakes. Most are very small, with the largest, Lake Peipus, being 3,555 km2 (1,373 sq mi); it is the fifth largest lake in Europe, and also the largest trans-boundary lake in the whole continent. There are many rivers in the country. The longest of them are Võhandu (162 km or 101 mi), Pärnu (144 km or 89 mi), and Põltsamaa (135 km or 84 mi). Estonia has numerous fens and bogs. Forest land covers 50% of Estonia] The most common tree species are pine, spruce and birch.

Phytogeographically, Estonia is shared between the Central European and Eastern European provinces of the Circumboreal Region within the Boreal Kingdom. According to the WWF, the territory of Estonia belongs to the ecoregion of Sarmatic mixed forests
