**FIRST EVER** Class 52 Western to visit Paddock Wood
Saturday 13th December 2014.
What I believe to be the first ever class 52 Western to visit this part Kent, no. D1015 Western Champion (acting as D1041 Western Prince) storms through Paddock Wood at 14:15, 2 hours and 22 minutes late (which is not bad considering it left Banbury almost 3 hours late due to one of the coaches suffering from brake problems). The working was 1Z23 06:33 Tame Bridge Parkway to Canterbury West. I didn't think this would happen, but thankfully I was wrong.

This new, 11.7 mile walk in the Medway Valley is not one of this walker's favourites. The first few miles, to Sluice Weir Lock, weren't a 'country' walk at all, and were a reflection of all that's wrong with this country at the moment; litter everywhere, scorch marks on the grass from discarded barbecues and illegal fishing on the river banks. People just don't seem to care and there's no enforcement. This needs to change, if the plastic island in the Pacific is to be reduced and our wild life saved.
Thereafter, the walk reflected some of what Kent is better known for; Oasts, Orchards and fields of vegetables.
Lunch was had in the church yard at Yalding, with its unusual church tower. There was a nice surprise at the end, with a 'Parish Picnic' in Yalding's community orchard.
A decent walk, after the initial 3 miles had elapsed, but one reflecting both the population growth and new housing development in Kent and the difficulty of creating new, true 'country' walks in the South East these days.

Full journey from Paddock Wood to Strood along the Medway Valley line on board a 3 carriage Southeastern class 375 Electrostar train. This journey was filmed on the 1800 service on Friday 11th August 2023 and called at all stations along this route.

Services on this route usually operate evert half hour with most services calling at all stations. There are limited direct services past Paddock Wood to Tonbridge at peak times as well as via a reversal at Strood to Gillingham at the start and end of the day. At Paddock Wood there is interchange with mainline services to London Bridge/Charing Cross as well as Ashford International, Ramsgate and Dover Priory. At Strood there are north Kent line connections with Southeastern and Thameslink to London stations via Dartford as well as to Rainham, there are also High Speed connections to London St Pancras International and Faversham/Ramsgate. A limited number of direct High Speed services operate to Maidstone West calling only at Snodland on the Medway Valley line.
The rolling stock on this route in mainly 3 carriage class 375 Electrostar although 4 carriage versions can be used in required. The limited Southeastern High Speed services to Maidstone are formed of 6 carriage class 395 Javelin trains.
This route is fully electrified using 3rd rail DC electrification. This route is double track throughout and has dedicated bay platforms at both Paddock Wood and Strood so this service can operate in isolation without interaction from other services.
