In this video I explore Sicily, Italy. I visit towns in the South East region of Sicily, including Catania, Noto, Syracuse and Ortigia. Sicily is a fascinating island in the South of Italy, with a rich mix of culture, history, food and the friendliest locals in Italy! I explore the bustling fish market in Catania, as well as try some popular Catanese dishes like pasta alla norma and eggplant caponata, I also feel adventurous enough to try the Catania specialty, horse meat burgers! I then visit the beautiful region of Noto and do some wine tasting of the famous nero d'avola red wine at a beautiful vineyard. Noto is a beautiful town known for it's sandstone cathedrals. I also visit the seaside town of Syracuse and Ortigia which have some incredible ancient Greek sites like the archeological park of Syracuse.

###PACHINO | SICILIA | 4K DRONE FOOTAGE###
The name derives from the Phoenician pachum , which means guard. According to Fazello, the origin would instead derive from the ancient Greek pachys , which means abundant, fertile. There are other theories that trace its meaning back to Pachys Oinos , which means land abundant with wine, or, referring to the island of Capo Passero, to Pacheia Nesos , or island with a large circumference. The promontory of Pachino was formed in the Cretaceous period (more than 70 million years ago). It seems that the Promontorium Pachyni was inhabited since the first prehistoric times, even if not many testimonies remain of these presences: about 10,000 years ago the Corruggi cave was inhabited , in which many archaeological finds were found, which are largely preserved in the Paolo Orsi Regional Archaeological Museum of Syracuse. These are scrapers, knives, spears, awls, needles and other everyday items. From the Corruggi and Fico caves, during the Neolithic period (between 8000 and 1500 BC), man moved on to live in caves (one of the best known in this area is that of Calafarina). Subsequently, in the Iron, Copper and Bronze Ages, until the arrival of the Sicilians, the rock dwellings moved to the nearby area called Cugni di Calafarina. Here villages and necropolises were born, a dolmen for the deceased and an underground oven for working metals, the remains of which, brought to light by Paolo Orsi, are still clearly visible and fairly well preserved.
Antiquity
In 750 BC, the territory of Pachino was inhabited by Phoenicians, Punics and Greeks. From 200 to 400 AD, the area was dominated by the Romans , who made it a center of commercial activity and colonization. Agriculture developed considerably with them, especially the cultivation of vines and wheat . In the Hellenistic period, some temples were built, one of which was dedicated to Apollo Libystino. Even today the remains of a rural votive temple remain in the Cugni district, a locality where the rails of the Via Elorina were traced, still clearly visible on the rock. Contrada Cugni, due to the high concentration of ancient remains, appears to be a sort of archaeological park .
Middle Ages
After the Romans, the Byzantines arrived (from 300 to 800), then the Arabs (from 800 to 1090) and finally the Normans. The Arabs gave the name to the hamlet of Marzamemi, in which they built the tuna fishery, which remained functional until the fifties, introduced the cultivation of citrus fruits , reclaimed the countryside, completed the Torre Xibini aqueduct, built the salt marshes and the Senia wells for the irrigation of the fields (still functioning), one of which at the gates of Marzamemi, known as u puzzu de quattru uocchi, used over the centuries, even on an industrial level, by different peoples, including pirates. The decline of the city begins with the Normans, the Aragonese and the Angevins. In this period the fortifications of Torre Xibini and Torre Fano were erected against the pirate invasions of the Turks.
Modern age
From 1583 to 1714, a hundred new feudal lands were born in Sicily. In this period there was a substantial change in the geography of the Netino countryside, with the foundation of Pachino and Portopalo in the coastal area between the tuna traps of Marzamemi and Capo Passero and the ports of Portopalo and della Marza. The history of the current Pachino begins when, in 1734, the Starrabbas of Piazza Armerina, owners of the Scibini and Bimmisca fiefdoms and, as such, having the baronial title on these fiefdoms as well as that of princes of Giardinelli, decided to reside in the territory to better look after their interests. To this end, the brothers Gaetano and Vincenzo Starrabba asked, in 1758, Charles III of Bourbon and, subsequently, in 1760, Ferdinand IV of the Two Sicilies for authorization to found a city (licentia populandi ), decree which was issued in Naples, on 21 July 1760, and which was made executive on 1 December 1760, thus obtaining the investiture of the title of Baron of the newborn feud. On 10 July 1943, in the stretch of coast that goes from Licata to Pachino, it began with the landing in Sicily by the Allies. The attack on Italy was decided by the Americans and the British during the Casablanca Conference; the planning and organization were entrusted to the general. Operation Husky constituted one of the largest landings of the Second World War, it allowed the return of the Anglo-Saxon powers to Europe and the attack on the weaker Axis power.
Maltese colony
Prince Ferdinand I wanted to implement the conditions of the Royal Decree. He therefore invited the Maltese neighbors to populate the new country and more than thirty families accepted the invitation.
