Palakkad lies near a wide low gap or pass in the Western Ghats mountain ranges that separates Kerala from Tamil Nadu. Consequently the city is a major conduit for travel between the two states. Palakkad is 4,480 square kilometres and the population is 2,617,072.
Palakkad is the land of Palmyras and Paddy fields. It is the chief granary of Kerala, often called the Gateway of Kerala. Palakkad lies at the foot of the gigantic Western ghats on the border of Kerala. This city surrounded by mountains, forests and fertile valleys, rivers and mountains streams are rich in flora and fauna.
Palakkad is known for its historical background and the remnants of Tippu Sulthan's Fort are still maintained.
Malayalam is widely spoken language as the rest of Kerala. However Palakkad is close to the Tamil Nadu border and people understand and speak Tamil well. You won't be very far from a person who speaks perfect English or Hindi just in case you need one.

Set among the Western Ghats, the reservoir of this dam is surrounded by majestic mountains and presents a spectacular view. An easy 1 hour drive from Palakkad on the Palakkad-Kozhikode national highway, with a turn off at Chirakalpadi. A very attractive garden too. .
• Kollengode. Beautiful green lands, the great Palace of Kollengode Kovilakam. .
• Hemambika/Emoor Bhagavathi temple and Siva Temple, (Near Olavakkode, 6 km from Palakkad). Bus available every 5 min from Palakkad Town Bus Stand. Board Rly Colony bus and get down at kallekulangara bus stop. .
• Kakkayur Kottamala Ayyappa temple, Kakkayur (15 km from Palakkad). The giant walls of this temple is at least 1 1/2 times taller than an elephant, built of stones unbelievable in size. There are no stone quarry nearby from where this has could have been taken. These stones are laid one on top of another without any sealing in between. They have been standing like that for centuries just on gravity. Also on the walls are writings in some very old language. .

• Pothundy Dam, (On the way to Nelliyampathy, 38 km from Palakkad). It is a reservoir built across Ayalur river as an irrigation project in 1968. It provide water to Nenmara and Ayalur villages. It is in a valley just below the Nelliyampathy Hills. Nemmara Vela. April 2nd/3rd every year. A traditional Indian festival. .
• Chinakathur Pooram. Every March-April. A spectacular festival. .
• Kalpathy Rathotsavam. Celebrtated during mid of November every year. Colourful Temple car festival where all the streets of the village will be lightened and the procession of Ratha's will take place. .
• Kunissery Kummatti. In March/April every year (on Punartham of Meenam). A traditional Indian festival. .
• Alampallam Radhotsavam. April. The biggest Chariot in Kerala. .
• Chittur Konganpada. Usually in March. The celebrations commemorate the victory of the Chittur Nairs over the militia of nearby Konganadu during 918 AD. It is said that there was constant fight in the Palakkad region between the Kerala kingdoms on the western side and the princely state of Konganad on the eastern side of the Western Ghat mountains. On the third day of the Konganpada festival 101 rounds of the kathina vedi (ironpipe crackers) commemorates the historic victory. Later, there is a kolam procession of little boys dressed as girls carried on the shoulders of men. At night men engage in mock fights wearing buffalo head masks to symbolise the dead buffaloes of the Konganpada (Kongan militia). .
• Puthur Vela, Puthur. Puthur Vela is a annual temple festival in Palakkad. A 10 day music and dance programme with intenational artists precedes this festival .

അതുകഴിഞ്ഞാൽ സ്നേക്ക് പാർക്ക്. മലമ്പുഴ ഡാമിനോട് ചേർന്നാണ് സ്നേക്ക് പാർക്ക് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. നിരവധി പാമ്പുകളുടെ ശേഖരം ഇവിടെയുണ്ട് അതുകഴിഞ്ഞാൽ കാവ

കവ മലമ്പുഴയിൽ നിന്നും 5 കിലോമീറ്റർ സഞ്ചരിച്ചാൽ കവയിൽ എത്താം.
മലമ്പുഴ ഡാമിന് പുറകിലായാണ് കവ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന വനപ്രദേശം. ഡാമിന്റെ പുറം കാഴ്ചകളും കാടിന്റെ മനോഹാരിതയും ഇവിടെ നിങ്ങൾക്ക് ആസ്വദിക്കാം. അധിവാസി വർഗ്ഗത്തിൽ പെട്ടവർ ഒരുപാടുള്ള സ്ഥലമാണ് ഇവിടം. കവയിൽ നിന്നും കല്പാത്തിയിലേക്ക്. 13 കിലോമീറ്റർ പോയാൽ കല്പാത്തി എത്തും.മലമ്പുഴയിൽ നിന്നും പാലക്കാട് പോകുന്ന വഴി തന്നെയാണ് കല്പാത്തിക്കും.

Palakkad is one of the fourteen districts of the Indian state of Kerala and is devoid of a coastal line. The district serves as a gateway to the rest of the country through the Palakkad Gap, which spans a width of 32 to 40 kilometers. Its strategic geographical location, rich historical background, impressive educational status, thriving tourism industry, and diverse development activities are noteworthy. The district is renowned for its agricultural prowess and is considered one of the main granaries of Kerala. Additionally, it is known for its Palmyrahs.

The Palakkad district was established as an administrative unit on January 1, 1957, and comprised Palakkad, Perinthalmanna, Ponnani, Ottapalam, Alathur, and Chittur. Later, when the Malappuram District was formed, Thritala firka of Ponnani Taluk and Mankada firka, as well as Karkidamkunnu and Chetalloor amsoms of Perinthelmanna Taluk, were excluded and transferred to the new district. A new taluk, Mannarkkad, was also formed. In 2013, Ottapalam taluk was bifurcated, and Pattambi taluk was established.

Currently, the Palakkad district comprises two revenue divisions, six taluks, and 157 revenue villages. There are seven municipalities, thirteen block panchayats, and eighty-eight village panchayats in the district. The District Police Office is located near the collectorate, and the district headquarters is situated in Palakkad Town. Following the 73rd amendment of the Indian Constitution, decentralized planning was implemented in the district, and a three-tier system was established in Panchayat Raj. The District Panchayat serves as the top-most tier of the Panchayat Raj System and is led by a President and a Vice-President, with an office located near the Collectorate.

The district is under the leadership of the District Collector and is situated at Collectorate, Civil Station, Palakkad. The District Collector exercises authority over the various offices within the district and the staff attached to the Collectorate. In order to maintain law and order, the District Police Chief assists the District Collector. Additionally, the District Panchayat President aids the District Collector in the planning and execution of development programs for the district.

The government offices within the district conduct their business through various office heads, in accordance with the rules of business. Each office is comprised of a District Officer, who serves as the official head of the office, as well as other officers and staff members who are assigned specific duties.

The inaugural District Collector of the district was Sri K. C. Sankaranarayanan IAS, while the District Police Chief was Sri. T. K. Bhaskara Marar IPS and the District Panchayat President was Sri. K.V. Vijayadas. Presently, the District Collector is Ms. Dr. S.Chitra IAS, the Police Chief is Sri. R.Vishwanadh IPS, and the District Panchayat President is K. Binumol.
