Oskaloosa, IA | A 4K City Walking Tour
Oskaloosa, Iowa derives its name from Ouscaloosa who, according to town lore, was a Creek princess who married Seminole chief Osceola. Oskaloosa in the Mvskoke-Creek language means black rain, from the Mvskoke words oske (rain) and lvste (black). loosa is an English corruption of the Mvskoke word lvste. The first European-American settlers arrived in 1835, led by Nathan Boone, youngest son of frontiersman Daniel Boone. In the late 1800s and early 1900s many of Oskaloosa's present landmarks were built. In 1873 William Penn College was founded as Penn Academy. Also that year the first bandstand was built in the city square. In 1886 the Mahaska County Courthouse was built, and it remains in use to this day. In 1903 the Carnegie Library opened. Also, President Teddy Roosevelt helped dedicate the YMCA building.

Penn Central Mall, Oskaloosa, IA 7/7/14
During a trip to Des Moines, I stopped in Oskaloosa, IA to take a look in the Penn Central mall, which I've only been in a couple times. It was built in 1985, and is Oskaloosa's second, and only surviving, shopping mall (the smaller Atpic Mall closed in the early 1990's). The mall itself is in great shape, and is a very interesting, but small, design. Unfortunately, very few stores remain. The only 'real' anchor store left is JCPenney. Hy-Vee occupies the spot where K-Mart once was years ago. The mall also used to have a McGregor's furniture store in the JCPenney wing, plus a hobby shop, Bath & Body Works, Stage salon, and others, all of which are now gone. But for what it is, there's still some good stuff here. This is probably one of the few malls in the country that has its own model railroad club, located in one of the old stores. There's also a Pizza Ranch restaurant at one end, which connects to Oskaloosa's old downtown buildings.

Osceola is the county seat of Clarke County, Iowa. Osceola was named after a Seminole Indian leader of the same name. Osceola is an anglicized form of Asiyahola: assi, from a ceremonial yaupon holly tea or black drink and yaholi, the name of a Creek god intoned when the drink was served.

✔ In 1847, 800 Dutch immigrants led by Dominee (Minister) Hendrik Henry P. Scholte settled in this area
✔ The name Pella is a reference to Pella of the Decapolis, where the Christians of Jerusalem had found refuge during the Roman–Jewish war of 70. The name was selected because the Dominee and his followers sought religious freedom as well
✔ The annual Tulip Time Festival is a celebration of Pella's Dutch heritage. There are over 200,000 tulip bulbs planted each year for their celebration. It features tulip gardens, performances, crafters, music, food, Dutch costumes, and daily parades. The festival is held for three days (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday) during the first weekend in May. A queen and court are selected from the two high schools in the town to represent Pella and advertise the Festival. During the 2010 Festival, a world record was set for the most people dancing in wooden shoes. Over 2,600 people danced for more than six minutes to set the new standard
