Places to see in ( Telford - UK )

Places to see in ( Telford - UK )

Telford is a large new town in the borough of Telford and Wrekin and ceremonial county of Shropshire, England, about 13 miles east of Shrewsbury, and 30 miles north west of Birmingham. Telford is the largest town in Shropshire, and one of the fastest-growing towns in the United Kingdom.

Telford is named after civil engineer Thomas Telford, who engineered many road and rail projects in Shropshire. The town was put together in the 1960s and 1970s as a new town on previously industrial and agricultural land and smaller towns. Like other planned towns of the era, Telford was created from the merger of other, smaller settlements, most notably the towns of Wellington, Oakengates, Madeley and Dawley. Many of the New Town's newer inhabitants were originally from Birmingham or Wolverhampton.

Telford Shopping Centre, a modern shopping mall, was constructed at the new town's geographical centre, along with an extensive Town Park. The M54 motorway was completed in 1983, improving the town's road links with the West Midlands conurbation.

On Telford's southern boundaries is the Ironbridge Gorge, a scenic tourist destination and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town of Telford advertises itself as The Birthplace of Industry, due to it having Coalbrookdale and other places in the Ironbridge Gorge area, within its boundary. These areas are internationally recognised as being important to the Industrial Revolution, and being to a large extent constructed on the Shropshire Coalfield.

Telford town centre lies about 21 kilometres (13 mi) east/south-east of Shrewsbury and 24 kilometres (15 mi) north-west of Wolverhampton. The town comprises 7,803 hectares (30.13 square miles) and its southern and eastern parts, between the Severn Gorge and Donnington Wood, include the East Shropshire coalfield. North and north-west Telford lie beyond the coalfield's boundary fault on sandstone beds which, along with other Triassic formations , prevail over much of the North Shropshire plain.

The commercial centre of the town is the aptly named Telford Town Centre, located off Junction 5 of the M54 motorway, completed in the 1980s. It is home to the administrative headquarters of Telford & Wrekin council, which are now based at Addenbrook House on Ironmasters Way, after moving from Civic Offices in December 2012. The large Telford Shopping Centre (and the accompanying Town Park), various office blocks, such as the blue office towers (Telford Plaza), and the Windsor Life building. The Forge retail park and a large Odeon Cinema are also located in the area. Telford also houses one of the Midland's few ice skating rinks near the newly built Telford International Centre (TIC). The TIC comprises a number of hall and event spaces. It holds parties, conferences, concerts and is the current home of the UK Snooker Championship in December. A major Shropshire landmark, also now part of Telford, is The Iron Bridge, located in Ironbridge. It was the first bridge of its size in the world made out of cast iron. In the same area is the Ironbridge Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most important landmark in the area is The Wrekin. There is also the Lilleshall Monument erected to the Duke of Sutherland, which has recently been restored.

Telford is situated at the terminus of the M54 motorway, a spur of the M6 linking the town with Wolverhampton and the West Midlands, and on the A5 road between Shrewsbury and Cannock. The town has three railway stations on the Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton Line: Wellington, Oakengates and Telford Central.

( Telford - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Telford . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Telford - UK

SHROPSHIRE Lilleshall Hill

There are many hills in Shropshire – they are mostly in the south, the west and the north-west. The north, north-east and east have few. Travellers arriving in Shropshire from the Midlands will readily spot The Wrekin, but not too many will know of Lilleshall Hill, which lies between Telford and Newport

The hill is not very high being 133m/433ft above sea-level and is soon surmounted with a pleasant 5 minute stroll. It offers fine views in all directions and noticeably has a large monument on top of it

The monument on Lilleshall Hill is in memory of George Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland KG, PC. A large tract of land in the area belonged to his family. It is common today for people to be sniffy with their sensibilities, however the Duke of Sutherland managed to upset many in his own lifetime for his part in the Highland Clearances (in the early 19th century)

Not enough for him to be celebrated with his monument in Shropshire, there was also another erected in the Highlands. It is very prominently sited upon a hill as you approach Golspie. Not surprisingly many Highlanders have been trying to get it removed for a long time

First Class 196 carrying passengers! (14/10/22)

While heading home from college I decided to stop off at Oakengates train station to see this train, a special media and guest only train service from Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury, stopping at Codsall and Telford Central then non stop to Shrewsbury, headcode 3T71, worked by West Midlands Railway 196101.

This train ran as a launch service. The first Class 196 that carried ordinary passengers was 1G05, the 06:51 service from Shrewsbury to Birmingham New Street on Monday 17th October 2022. That was too early for me, however I wanted to get a video from the college lineside field of 2J06 which was its first full passenger run from Birmingham New Street to Shrewsbury. Sadly though bad luck would interfere and it ran 20 minutes late meaning it would pass while I was in class. But I can still say I saw it on its first ever official diagram though, the last of the three runs on its first ever diagram was a late running 1G14, the 09:11 service from Shrewsbury to Birmingham New Street which left Shrewsbury at 09:33 - while I was doing an activity at college, I happened to spot it going by.

With this being a media trip there is always possibility of someone from local news or other VIP's onboard. But there were two people I knew online aboard this service - @downonthestour and @FirstClassEmil.

So like it or not, it's safe to say it's beginning of the end of an era for TFW 158's, WMR 170's, and AWC 221's on this line. In the next coming years the WMR 196's, TFW 197's and AWC 805's will completely change the local trainspotting atmosphere.

See that man filming? I don't know his name but he's actually the Mayor of Oakengates. He came to visit coz he knew about this running as well.

This unit has also been given a new nameplate with the name Charles Darwin. If your local, you should know who Charles Darwin was, but if not, he was a naturalist, a geologist and a biologist, born in Shrewsbury in 1809. Upon arrival at Shrewsbury, an official naming ceremony took place before it returned to Wolverhampton.

Class 158 Overview - The Express Sprinter

The Class 158 is a feat of engineering. Constructed during the era of British Rail, it continued to operate throughout the privatisation of the railways and still serves passengers up and down the country today. Join me for this brief overview of the Class 158 Express Sprinter.

The majority of the Super Sprinter fleet still in service today is formed of 2-car units, though some TOCs, such as GWR, do operate a handful of 3-car units for added capacity. The trains have a maximum speed of 90 miles per hour, and can accelerate at a maximum of 0.8 metres per second squared.

On board is a 2+2 seating arrangement with a mix of airline-style and table seats. There is space for two bicycles on board, too. Dotted throughout the carriages are digital PIS (passenger information system) displays with general journey information.
