Oak Ridge is a city in Anderson and Roane counties in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Tennessee, about 25 miles (40 km) west of downtown Knoxville. Oak Ridge's population was 31,402 at the 2020 census.[7] It is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Area. Oak Ridge's nicknames include the Atomic City,[8] the Secret City,[9] the Ridge, the Town the Atomic Bomb Built,[10] and the City Behind the Fence.[11]

In 1942,[12] the United States federal government purchased nearly 60,000 acres of farmland in the Clinch River Valley for the development of a planned city supporting 75,000 residents. It was constructed with assistance from architectural and engineering firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, from 1942 to 1943.[13] Oak Ridge was established in 1942 as a production site for the Manhattan Project—the massive American, British, and Canadian operation that developed the atomic bomb. Being the site of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Y-12 National Security Complex, scientific and technological development still plays a crucial role in the city's economy and culture in general.[14]

Manhattan Project History Museums - Oak Ridge Tennessee

After watching the movie Oppenheimer, I was so intrigued to visit these historical locations in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Oak Ridge, known as the secret city, is one of three secret cities that were built in secrecy to construct the world's first atomic bomb. (Along with Los Alamos, New Mexico and Hanford, Washington). In the movie Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, the majority of the effort was focused on Los Alamos, however Oak Ridge developed the enriched uranium to support the project.

Ed Westcott was the official photographer for the Manhattan Project. You can bet that you have seen his work if you have seen any historical images of Oppenheimer or any of the people and places associated with this project. Many of his images, now available in the public domain were used in the making of this video

I visit three historical museums associated with the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. I learned so much on this journey through time.

The first stop is the Manhattan Project National Historical Park that was established in 2015. It was a collaborative partnership between the National Park Service and the US Department of Energy. There are several historical sites in the area that comprises this park. For information about visiting the Manhattan Project National Historical Park see

The 2nd spot we visit is the American Museum of Science and Energy. This is an interactive museum that dives into the science that was developed as part of the Manhattan Project and takes you through a journey of all the practical applications using the nuclear science today. The Department of Energy hosts tours to their historic sites outside of town. 2024 tours have not yet been scheduled. The tours start at this museum and tickets can be purchased here:

Lastly we visit the Oak Ridge History Museum. I was shocked at the amount of memorabilia on display at this museum. In addition, this museum has the most information about the African American Experience during the Manhattan Project, to include a reconstructed Hutment. Ed Westcott's son-in-law currently volunteers at this museum- they have an incredible display of his work and a section dedicated to him as well, truly, an American Treasure. Illinois
US State
Illinois is a midwestern state bordering Indiana in the east and the Mississippi River in the west. Nicknamed the Prairie State, it's marked by farmland, forests, rolling hills and wetlands. Chicago, one of the largest cities in the U.S, is in the northeast on the shores of Lake Michigan. It’s famous for its skyscrapers, such as sleek, 1,451-ft. Willis Tower and the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower. ― Google

Springfield
City in Illinois
Springfield is the state capital of Illinois. Downtown, the interior of Illinois State Capitol's large dome is decorated with stained glass and statues of historical figures. The 1904 Dana-Thomas House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum traces the life of the 16th U.S. president. Lincoln's restored home is nearby. North, the Lincoln Tomb lies in Oak Ridge Cemetery. ― Google
