For ALL proud American gun owners heading down to anywhere in Mexico, regardless of the border crossing: LEAVE YOUR FIREARM (S) AND AMMO BACK HOME OR NEVER GO TO MEXICO which is the best advise I'll ever come up with.
I always carry (in car) my loaded firearm with me, fully legal in Texas, that's why crossing into Mexico is always a HUGE NO!
99.99% of ppl in this area and anywhere along USA-Mexico border called Mexico North are either Mexican nationals or of Mexican descent and therefore very few of them speak English.
Pretty interesting to learn how Mexicans on both sides of the border live their daily lives but IF you happen not to speak Spanish you have no place in Mexico North EVER.

I tell you why, and how to get there. I went to El Corchito Ecological Reserve, El Malecón, and to a dog shelter. Have you been there? Tell me if you agree with me :)
Progreso is a port city on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. It’s a common stop for cruise ships, which dock at its landmark long pier. To get here you can take a flight to Mérida and then a taxi to Progreso. It's about 40 minutes.
It has a nice vibe, there are a lot of dogs and the beach is beautiful.

Progreso, Mexico. Worth the trip? (Yucatan Vlog)
EDIT: Since making this video we've heard about a new pig beach in Progreso, where you can play with pigs. As lovers of pigs and beaches, that sounds intriguing! If anyone knows any details or has experienced it...we'd love to hear from you!
We took advantage of a day off to head to Progreso, Mexico on the Gulf of Mexico. It was an easy 30 minute trip from Yucatan's vibrant capital city Merida, where we're currently staying. Despite some major setbacks on the trip, it was a fun getaway and there's actually a few interesting things about Progreso that we didn't know before visiting. Like it's beautiful nature preserve, usually overshadowed by the beaches and the fact that it has one of the world's longest piers. It also has an active lighthouse that's become a distinct landmark for the small city of less than 50,000 people.
Progreso is a destination for cruise ship and generally looked at as a gateway to visit cities like Merida or famous Mayan sites like Chichen Itza. It is overall a pretty touristy place, but that doesn't mean you can't find some things worth doing there.
Check out our experience in Progreso and decide for yourself if it's worth making a trip, depending on what you like. If you do go though, our advice is just to make sure you don't miss out on other places in the Yucatan state and give plenty of time to them. We've found the Yucatan state to be one of the most interesting, historical, and cultural travel destinations in the world full of colorful cities, beautiful nature, and delicious food. Too many people hang out by the coast and miss everything else. Parts of the coast on the Yucatan Peninsula are indeed amazing, but even better treasures are in the center!
