Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria: What are the top attractions to visit?

You wanna know what are the top attractions to visit in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria? This video is for you!

Veliko Tarnovo is one of Bulgaria’s most picturesque cities, and it’s on many tourists’ “must visit” list of places to see in Bulgaria for a reason.

Veliko Tarnovo is located on the beautiful Yantra river, which forms a horseshoe around the city.

The city is built on three hills, the tallest of which is called Tsarevets and is home to a massive historic fortress.

Its unique architecture, Old World charm, and status as the former capital of the Bulgarian Empire are just a few of the many reasons Veliko Tarnovo is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Bulgaria.

It’s possible to visit Veliko Tarnovo as a day trip from Sofia, but it would be a very long day with much of your day in transport.

From Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo, it’s 220 kilometers to the east or about 3 hours by car. So I recommend giving it at least an overnight visit.

If you don't know when to visit the city, consider its extremely hot summers and freezing winters. Therefore spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit.

Whether you opt for just a day trip or choose to stay for several nights, here are a few of our favorite things to do in Veliko Tarnovo.

🇧🇬 Stara Zagora, Bulgaria 🌃 Night Walk in Park „Stantsionna gradina“ (Park „Station garden“) 4K 🇧🇬

🇧🇬 Night walk in #StaraZagora #bulgaria

The garden was created and refined in the period 1898-1912. It covers an area of 96 decares. The design of the garden is the work of the gardener Marin Penchev from Kilifarevo, who was invited to the city by the municipal administration.

The name comes from the location of the park - next to the railway station (called a railway station in the last century).

The park was renovated in the period 2020-2021 with a BGN 4 million grant under the Operational Program Growing Regions.

The Municipality of Stara Zagora has been awarded a diploma in the Projects related to the development of cities category for the renovated Station Garden at this year's (2021) edition of the prestigious Building of the Year competition.

Stara Zagora (Bulgarian: Стара Загора, pronounced [ˈstarɐ zɐˈɡɔrɐ]) is a city in Bulgaria, and the administrative capital of the homonymous Stara Zagora Province and municipality. Its located in the Upper Thracian Plain, being near the cities of Kazanlak, Plovdiv, Sliven. Its population is around 158,563, making it the sixth largest city, just below Ruse and above Pleven.

The city had a period of different names, mainly Beroe, Borui, Irenepolis, Eski Zagra, Augusta Traiana, etc.

Earliest traces of civilisation date back to the 7th millenium B.C. Some scholars believe that the ancient Thracian Beroe was located there. In 1968, Neolithic dwellings from the mid-6th millennium BC were discovered in the town, which are the best preserved and richest collection in Europe and have been turned into a museum.

A high density of Neolithic and Chalcolithic settlements has been identified by researchers and a ritual structure nearly 8,000 years old has also been discovered. Also the first copper factory in Europe and a large ore mining centre were discovered, both over 7,000 years old. The original settlement dates from the 5th-4th century B.C under the name Beroe or Beroia, founded by Philip II of Macedon. It was renamed to Ulpia Augusta Traiana during Roman rule and became the second most important city, after Philippopolis. During Marcus Aurelius' rule, many buildings have been built, art and music developed and there were statues and inscriptions of Orpheus.

The Battle of Beroe was fought, which resulted in a Gothic victory over the Romans. During the Gothic War between 376-382, the city was under attack by the Goths in order to attack Frigiderus, a Roman general, but he promptly withdrew to Illyria. At the end of the 6th century, Beroe was destroyed, but rebuilt under the name Veroia.

During the Middle Ages, Zagore is mentioned for the first time by Byzantine historians. Irene of Athens visited the town, rebuilding it and renaming it to Irenepolis, in honour of her. By the end of the 10th century, the city was in Bulgarian hands and acquired a fully Bulgarian character. Bulgarians called the town Borui (a modified form of the Thracian Beroe).

In 1371, the Ottomans conquered the town, but its earliest mention was in an Ottoman document from 1430. Plagues rampaged in the 18th-19th century, as well as famine and drought, livestock pestilence, and hailstorms destroyed all crops. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, the town had devastating moments, which included a massacre in which thousands of people lost their lives, young women and girls being sold in the slave market of the Ottoman Empire.

In modern times, the city is relieved, as a growing city. The economy is developing like major cities in Bulgaria, with one of the highest wages in the country, high GDP in comparison with many Bulgarian cities, low unemployment of about 4%. The city is also located near the largest energy industrial complex, Maritsa Iztok Complex, where many of the people from Stara Zagora are employed.

Sunny Weather = Sunny Mood ☀️ Sliven to Stara Zagora

Day 60. 73km (53508kms)
The high winds continued well into night but mercifully I woke to a much calmer day.
The warbles and gurgles of the bird life were especially lovely as I slowly awoke. Today, despite the improved conditions I would give myself the morning off to recover. A sunny Sunday morning, hikers and dog walkers were already on their way into the park as I ate breakfast in the tent. Puzzled expressions transformed to warm greetings when I offered a добpo утро (good morning).

With no particular objective I set out up the trail for as long as I could be bothered, taking the opportunity for my first run of the year to return down the track. A combination of run endorphins, sun, and a favourable wind put me in a marvellous mood unabated even by an unfortunate exchange just outside Sliven. An overtaking car gave a friendly beep; not uncommon. It pulled over ahead and the man gestured me to stop; also not very uncommon. We briefly established that I was enjoying Bulgaria whereupon he asked me for sex. My involuntary (and probably a little hurtful) “Urgh! No!” may have been punishment enough but I took a photo of his rego as he re-overtook me to give him something to think about.

A servo with outdoor plugs and wifi (the dream!) provided the opportunity for a second lazy lengthy internet session of phone calls and language lessons. By now the wind was at my back, the road flat, so I comfortably made it to Stara Zagora, despite it not being my intention for the day at all.

Up a hill in the eastern outskirts of city I watched the sun set from the Monument to the Defenders of Stara Zagora, before retiring away from the crowds to a quieter part of the forest to pitch up for the night.
