Long Island Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia

Long Island – Less than an hour’s drive from NYC, find the first of the island’s much-loved beaches. From there, follow us through the coolest parts of the area.

When ready, browse vacation packages to Long Island:

A #LongIsland #vacation sends you eastward from the New York boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens to the bluffs of Montauk Point. A short train ride from Manhattan is Long Beach, which for many is where Long Island begins. Visit Fire Island Lighthouse, which for generations of immigrants was their first glimpse of America. It was on Long Island’s northern shores where the mansions were built that would inspire F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic, The Great Gatsby.

#Visit the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Hempstead and continue your flight into the past at the American Airpower Museum. #Explore the pioneer settlement of Southampton Village and nearby Sag Harbor, a historic whaling port immortalized in Moby Dick. America’s first president, George Washington, commissioned Montauk Lighthouse on Long Island’s easternmost point. Climb to the top to take in the sweeping views of this place that has played center stage in some of America’s greatest stories.

For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Smith Point County Park is a beachfront park facing the Atlantic Ocean on the east end of Fire Island, along the central south shore of Long Island, near Shirley, New York, United States. It is the largest park owned by Suffolk County.

The park derives its name from Smith Point, a peninsula on the Long Island mainland that extends into Bellport Bay. The peninsula was named for William Tangier Smith, who in the 17th century owned 50 miles (80 km) of ocean-front property in the Manor of St. George. The park does not own the Smith Point peninsula.

Smith Point Park, located on the barrier island of Fire Island, is a haven for sportsmen, surfers and beach lovers.

Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy (unofficially referred to as Superstorm Sandy) was the deadliest, the most destructive, and the strongest hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm inflicted nearly $70 billion (2012 USD) in damage. Sandy was a Category 3 storm at its peak intensity when it made landfall in Cuba. While it was a Category 2 hurricane off the coast of the Northeastern United States, the storm became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record

Hurricane Sandy was referred to as “Superstore Sandy because it had lost some of the traits needed to call it a hurricane. Sandy developed as an ordinary hurricane in the Caribbean, but as it moved up the East Coast and encountered cooler air and water, it began to loose its tropical characteristics. Hurricane Sandy was no longer a hurricane when it made land fall on Fire Island which is why it is also called Superstorm Sandy. The storm generated the highest storm tide ever recorded in New York, reaching to nearly 14 feet in height, about 9 feet of which was from storm surge.

Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) → How to ride, view schedule, buy tickets, board train, transfer, etc

The Long Island Rail Road (or LIRR) is a commuter rail that goes through Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk. It's a great way to see the areas east of New York City (which is Long Island). I use it to go to Far Rockaway beach, Citifield for a Mets game, and Billie Jean King/Arthur Ashe for the US Open Tennis. But how do you take the LIRR? How do you ride the Long Island Rail Road? In this video, I'm going to cover everything you need to know about the Long Island Rail Road — from defining what it is to buying a ticket from a machine or phone, finding and boarding your train, figuring out transfers, and so much more. Enjoy and Happy New York-ing!

Fire Island, New York

Fire Island is the Large Center Island of the outer barrier islands parallel to the south shore of Long Island, In the New York.
My video shooting on the top of Fire Island Lighthouse and to views Via The Robert Moses Causeway on its western end.
Fire Island lies on average 3.9 miles (6.2 km) off the south shore of Long Island, but nearly touches it along the east end. It is separated from Long Island by Great South Bay, which spans interconnected bays along Long Island: Patchogue Bay, Bellport Bay, Narrow Bay, and Moriches Bay. The island is accessible by automobile near each end: via Robert Moses Causeway on its western end, and by William Floyd Parkway (Suffolk County Road 46) near its eastern end. Cross-bay ferries connect to over 10 points in between. Motor vehicles are not permitted on the rest of the island, except for utility, construction and emergency access and with limited beach-driving permits in winter. The island and its resort towns are accessible by boat, seaplane and a number of ferries, which depart from Patchogue, Bay Shore and Sayville.

Lonelyville Fire Island NY 🔥🏖 walking tour Atlantic Ocean 🌊 beach to Great South Bay New York USA

Lonelyville Fire Island NY 🔥🏖 walking tour Atlantic Ocean 🌊 beach to Great South Bay New York USA 🇺🇸

This small town begins at the east end of Fair Harbor and is only a few blocks long. There are no commercial services here and the residents seem to like it that way. There isn’t much boardwalk here, and you get to your house on the sand. If you want a peaceful retreat, this is the town for you. Ferries are from Bay Shore and shopping is in Fair Harbor

Of the islands many pocket communities, Lonelyville is one of the oldest on Fire Island.

Founded in 1905 by the South Shore Realty Company, this secluded town is characterized by its two distinct areas.

On the Western side, many original 1930’s cottages are nestled between the narrow wooden boardwalks, shaded by the lush vegetation.

Some vestiges of the buildings existing during the fishing operations of Capt. Selah Clock in the 1880’s can still be found.

On the Eastern side, homes sprouted up during the 1960’s along the more modern cement walkways. Though different in architecture, the two sides are joined by a love of privacy, relaxation, and comfortable lifestyle.

Many who reside here are long-timers, who have had homes here for generations. They share their town happily with the intrepid renters and newcomers.

There are no stores, restaurants, bars, or any of the usual amenities found in neighboring towns.

Groceries are brought from Fair Harbor or the mainland, and carried or wagonned in.

What is sacrificed in convenience is more than made up in the serenity and beauty of this special community.

Ferry service is from Bay Shore, use Dunewood ferry

Atlantique Fire Island NY 🔥🏖 walking tour Strong's & Grovers Marina 🛥 Atlantic Ocean 🌊 New York USA

Atlantique Fire Island NY 🔥🏖 walking tour Strong's & Grovers Marina 🛥 Atlantic Ocean 🌊 New York USA 🇺🇸

The expansive harbor is perfect for Long-islanders to dock and enjoy the beach for the day. There are no stores here and residents bring their own supplies or shop in Fair Harbor or Ocean Beach. There are no boardwalks, so plan to carry your stuff over sandy paths. But there’s more happening here after dark at The Shack.

Atlantique is a small town known as a haven for boat owners to dock and play. They come for the day or stay on board for longer in the large 150+ slip marina. Residents play along with them at the beach.

The Shack is the gathering place, snack bar and at night, opens serving its legendary 5:00 Rocket Fuels. Live bands play and sun-kissed people dance the night away.

Ferries to Atlantique leave from Bay Shore, but stop only in Dunewood.

There are about 50 homes, including the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Fire Island headquarters. The marina is a popular destination with 150+ slips. You can use the electrical and fresh water hook-ups, pump-out station, 24-hour restrooms, hot showers, playground, handball and basketball courts and BBQ area. The bay and ocean beaches have lifeguards. There is a no pet policy here in the facilities.

Point o' Woods Fire Island NY 🔥🏖 walking tour from the Great South Bay New York USA 2021 4K video

Point O' Woods is a hamlet that consists of a private vacation retreat on Fire Island, New York, in Suffolk County. Although it resembles a village or small town, with services such as a ferry port, a general store, church and fire department, the private community is open exclusively to members and their guests, who are the only persons allowed in through the hamlet's gate, or allowed to use the private ferry that runs to Point O' Woods from Bay Shore on Long Island.

Point O Woods feels like another century, and residents here guard their privacy. This stunning community borders Ocean Bay Park on the west and a stretch of open National Seashore to the east. Ferries leave from Bay Shore

Return to Bellport… Again Summer Supreme Ocean Wild Beach Fire Island East End Long Island New York

A summer day at the beach on Fire Island, the wild barrier island facing the Atlantic Ocean, and a refreshing break from the desert heat: join me for a very special trip back to my favorite East Coast beach town: Bellport, Long Island.

Bellport is a charming hamlet on the east end of Long Island, far enough out to be past the commuter belt, but not so far as to be part of the ritzy and glitzy south fork scene known as the hamptons. Over the years it’s become a magnet for artists, designers, and tasteful New Yorkers looking for a weekend getaway that’s not too far away from the city. Better yet, Bellport village has the proprietary use of its own 4 mile pristine stretch of Fire Island known as Ho-Hum Beach. And village residents are allowed to ride the ferry to and from the town marina over to the barrier island, as well as moor their boats there. As you can imagine having such a remote and access controlled stretch of beach has led to an absolutely glorious stretch of coastline.

So in this video we’ll check up on our gardening from earlier in the season, and stroll past my favorite historic homes and chat about the local coastal vernacular style. Thank you so much for joining me for this video and here on my channel: Desert Mountain Apothecary.

Bellport in Spring – Gardening, Seafood, Wine & Childhood Memory Triggers

I enjoyed sharing my late-summer trip to my favorite East Coast beach town: Bellport, Long Island so much that I decided to also share a spring trip. In Spring my friend and I dug up her front yard, transplanted all the bushes, plants, and even a small tree, and installed new native landscaping. It was so much fun because growing up in Long Island, my father was an avid gardener. He passed on to me a love of growing things, and the artistic, scientific, and spiritual art of creating and nurturing a garden.

When dear friends of mine bought a vacation home on Eastern Long Island I was overjoyed, since my parents had long since moved away. Both of my friends are originally from overseas, and the house, came freshly renovated, but lacking any landscaping, even lawns. So the first couple of years they played around as you do when you buy a new house, and just went shopping at the nursery and picked out what caught there eye and planted things here and there. But as things grew there was no design, or any plan to how things were growing.

My friend had an inspiration image of a beautiful garden in Europe created with only native plants, and featuring dark green foliage and only white flowers. It was beautiful, and it was very naturalistic, modeled on a cottage-y meadow garden. She was unsure if it was appropriate for the climate and the style of the town and I felt for sure it was. So we drove down to the nursery and filled up the car to the brim with plants and got to work and the result was outstanding! I had such a wonderful time puttering around in the garden with my friend, and over time the landscaping has grown in in beautifully, so I wanted to share that same feeling of joy with you. So without further ado, let’s return back to the East Coast, back to Long Island, back to where it all started.

Thank you so much for joining me on this visit to Bellport in springtime. I loved strolling down memory lane on the railroad, sharing time in the garden, and indulging in freshly caught North Atlantic seafood and top quality natural wines.

Inspiration is the key to growth and innovation, but it always seems to escape when we’re tethered to our computers grinding away. Often times taking some time to get back to nature in the garden, take a hike, or cook a meal with a dear friend, brings those amazing, new ideas up to the surface. So if you are searching for creative inspiration, or stuck with a seemingly unsolvable problem, step away and allow inspiration to flow.

So once again I want to remind everyone watching this to be kind to yourself, make your wellbeing a priority today, and it start with even the smallest step. You are worth it, your life is worth something, you are loved, you are love itself, and I believe in you.

Thank you so much for spending time with me on my channel: Desert Mountain Apothecary

46 Top Ridge Trail, White Lake - New York 12786

This spectacular Adirondack log homes is perched on picturesque lake front lot overlooking Sullivan County's second largest lake the Toronto Reservoir. Toronto is a semi private lake used almost exclusively by Chapin Estate residents. This 5 bedroom 3.5-bath estate has views of the lake from every room except the bathrooms. The kitchen features a beautiful slate countertop that is nicer than anything I have seen in The Chapin Estate. The wood floors are 6 wide white pine that are much nicer than your typical 2-4 boards. The lower level has a large family room and two additional bedroom that can also be used as an office and or exercise rooms. The Chapin Estate is located in the central part of the county between its three largest motor boat lakes Swinging Bridge, Toronto & White Lake. There is plenty of action in the summer months and numerous restaurants on the lakes. This is a true paradise for nature lovers, hunters & fisherman.

Water Island
While Water Island might make you think it is a separate landmass, this is not the case. Water Island is a small, extremely private Fire Island beach community comprised of about 50 houses on modest plots of Fire Island real estate. With Davis Park to the East and Barrett Beach to the west, Water Island is far from the Fire Island beach civilization, creating a sense of privacy that is well-appreciated by its residents.

As early as 1878 a restaurant called the Pavilion existed where Water Island is today. It was run by a man named Richard Silsbee. During the 1890s Water Island was home to the prestigious White House Hotel, a pleasant example of beach hotel architecture designed by Edward Ryder and frequented by Theodore Roosevelt and his family. Caldwell Realty opened the areas up to residential development in 1912. The isolation of Water Island made it an ideal destination for rumrunners during the prohibition era.

Many coastal areas on Long Island and Fire Island share in this heritage, and as Fire Island has a legacy of wreckers and land pirates, this was not so great a leap—yet Water Island is perhaps the quintessential example of such an outpost. For a great many years, the residents of Water Island did not have even the most basic services. It was one of the last Fire Island communities to connect to the Long Island Power Authority grid. Prior to that, access to the nearest stores or restaurants required a mile-long hike to either Fire Island Pines or Davis Park. For many years there was no ferry service as well, only private boat access. However now a minimal ferry schedule out of Sayville, NY, finally exists.

Fire Island runs from Democrat Point / Fire Island Inlet in the west to Moriches Inlet / Cupsoque Beach in the east.

Fire Island is 31 miles long and 2 - 3 blocks wide and is comprised of about 20 distinct communities

Neighboring Long Island is 118 miles long

The name of Fire Island first appeared on a deed in 1789

1863 Fire Island separates from Jones Beach

There was a time when Fire Island was connected to Jones Beach Island, a single island stretching 60 miles from Jones Beach to South Hampton. The Fire Island Inlet naturally formed in 1863, and was later expanded through manpower, once over 9 miles wide before shrinking to its current width.

1931 Fire Island separates from Southampton

A 1931 Nor’easter caused the formation of the Moriches inlet and resulting in the separation of Southampton and Fire Island. Local efforts have protected eastern Fire Island with a series of jetties that have interrupted the longshore drift of sand from east to west which is blamed for the beach erosion.

While it was a Category 2 hurricane off the coast of the Northeastern United States, the storm became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record as measured by diameter with tropical-storm-force winds spanning 1,150 miles (1,850 km)

The October 2012 storm generated the highest storm tide ever recorded in New York, reaching to nearly 14 feet in height, about 9 feet of which was from storm surge
