Come see the best town in NC to visit. We head to North Carolina to see a great small town-Rutherfordton, North Carolina. Chloe and Sophie will complete the Kids In Parks North Carolina scavenger hunt in Getting Out Episode 27.
Main Street in Rutherfordton climbs a gentle hill past the Norris Public Library and the Neo-Classical facade of the Woodrow Jones Community Hall before passing between rows of neat brick store buildings. At the crest of the hill stands the imposing Rutherford County Court House, a collection of venerable churches, and a number of gracious old homes sheltered by aging walnut and maple trees. The architecture and atmosphere speak clearly of an earlier time. At every turn there is evidence that Rutherfordton is a very old town.
Established in 1787, Rutherfordton is one of the oldest towns in Western North Carolina. Our founding along a ridge-line offers vistas of a rolling countryside, leading to a backdrop of the great Blue Ridge Mountains. Our history runs deep here and we are a community of firsts. You can still sense our past in the traditional historic brick buildings in downtown, as well as the stately antebellum homes that line our streets.
Today, we are known within the region for our unrivaled quality of life, the beauty of our place and our pride in our community. We provide a wealth of cultural and creative arts more commonly found in a large city and an abundance of outdoor recreation activities found only in more rural places. Our downtown is the heart of activity and energy in our community, where new discoveries are made everyday.

Eric Norland had spent 3 years traveling around the world on a bicycle named FRIEND from 1983 through 1986. He visited 33 countries, 5 continents, and pedaled about 30,000 miles. He started in Santa Barbara California in July 1983, pedaled across USA, UK, Europe, Middle East, Egypt, India, SE Asia, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, China, Philippines, Taiwan, S. Korea, Hawaii. When he returned back to California in October 1986, his relatives in San Ramon offered to film him. This is the recording of his final bike ride on FRIEND.
