Exploring Caucasus Mountains | Top Russia Travel Vlog 2021

Most tourists who visit Russia usually see only Moscow and St. Petersburg. What if I tell you that there is one incredible and unique region the memories after visiting which will forever remain in your memory?
This area is called Caucasus. This is Russia that you don't expect to see!

During the week my friends and I visited four regions of this area: Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia-Alania and Ingushetia. Each of these regions has a special atmosphere. In each of them you will see unique and incredibly beautiful places that will take your breath away. The nature of the Caucasus is so amazing!

We visited Mineralnye vody, Pyatigorsk, Essentuki, Vladikavkaz and Beslan towns, went to the top of the mountains of Dombai, were driving not far from the highest mountain in Europe - Elbrus, were living in the houses of local people in the villages and so much more.

Kind people, delicious meat and pies, sweet wine, unforgettable mountains, incredible views, the most beautiful sunsets, horses running through the mountains - this is all the Caucasus. This region is one of the most beautiful in Russia and it is a must-visit! I really hope you will see these places!

Beautiful Scenery in Vladikavkaz Russia 4K

Here are 10 interesting historical facts about Vladikavkaz, Russia:

Foundation and Name:

Vladikavkaz was founded in 1784 as a Russian military fortress. The name Vladikavkaz translates to Ruler of the Caucasus, reflecting its strategic significance in controlling the region.
Military Significance:

The fortress was established to secure Russian control over the Georgian Military Road, which was crucial for Russian expansion into the Caucasus and securing routes to the southern territories.
Capital of the Terek Oblast:

In the late 19th century, Vladikavkaz became the administrative center of the Terek Oblast, which was part of the larger Caucasus region under Russian control.
Railway Development:

The arrival of the railway in the late 19th century boosted Vladikavkaz's development, turning it into a significant industrial and transportation hub in the Caucasus.
Diverse Population:

Historically, Vladikavkaz has been a melting pot of different ethnic groups, including Russians, Ossetians, Armenians, Georgians, and others, contributing to its rich cultural diversity.
Civil War and Soviet Period:

During the Russian Civil War (1917-1922), Vladikavkaz changed hands multiple times between the Red and White armies. It was later incorporated into the Soviet Union and served as a regional administrative center.
Industrial Growth:

Under Soviet rule, Vladikavkaz saw significant industrial development, with the establishment of various factories and plants, making it an important economic center in the North Caucasus.
Name Changes:

In 1931, Vladikavkaz was renamed Ordzhonikidze in honor of the Soviet politician Sergo Ordzhonikidze. It reverted to its original name, Vladikavkaz, in 1990, just before the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Ossetian-Ingush Conflict:

In 1992, the city was affected by the Ossetian-Ingush conflict, an ethnic and territorial dispute between the Ossetians and Ingush people. Vladikavkaz, being the capital of North Ossetia, played a central role in the conflict.
Cultural and Educational Center:

Today, Vladikavkaz is known for its cultural and educational institutions, including theaters, museums, and universities. The city is a center for Ossetian culture and has a vibrant arts scene.

Freedom Square, the old name is Mikhailovskaya Square, is the main square of the city of Vladikavkaz. It houses the building of the Supreme Court of the Republic, as well as the Soviets' House.

When I was living in Vladikavkaz, I left it in 1990 for Moscow, the Oktyabr Cinema Theater was also located on Svoboda Square. I remember as boys we would always visit it with great pleasure. Although tickets to Oktyabr Cinema Theater were the most expensive in the city, it was worth it – because of coziness, comfort, and a huge cinema screen.

In 2012, Oktyabr Cinema Theater was demolished, and now there is just space.

The Soviets' House is a monument of architecture and urban planning, an object of the cultural heritage of Russia. The Soviets' House was built in 1940. The building houses the Supreme Council of the Republic and the Council of Ministers of North Ossetia.

Along Tsereteli Street we passed by the Republican Pioneers Palace and the Children's Library.

I can't walk calmly along Tsereteli Street ... my heart always trembles ... to the left of the camera you can see my Alma mater - Gymnasium number five, ..., and to the right - Pushkin Square.

Gymnasium No. 5 is the oldest school in the North Caucasus. In 2002 it celebrates 135 years since its foundation.

We turn into the Museum Lane... The building of the Museum of the Tersk region, now the Museum of Ossetian literature, named after Kosta Khetagurov

The House of Cinema (formerly the Konstantinovsky School) is a monument of the cultural heritage of Russia.

North Ossetian State University.

The Kavkaz Hotel... was built in the late 40s... after a major overhaul in 2011, it became known as Planet Lux.

Vatutina Street... my home street... there is a house on it to which I was brought from the maternity hospital №1. I was living in this building from 1963 until 1990 ... then I left Vladikavkaz for Moscow.

Druzhba cinema theatre (Druzhba means friendship).

Yes, all my childhood and almost all of my youth passed by on these streets.

On the right hand is the entrance to the Central Market of Vladikavkaz.

Kuybysheva Street... it goes straight to Prospekt Mira, to Lenin Square, on which the Alexandrovsky Grand Hotel is located.

Stateon supermarket – here we usually bought some food during our stay in Vladikavkaz. A very nice store. Recommend!

And we keep walking along Kuibyshev Street to the place from where we started our little walk...

At the end of 2016, the reconstruction of the old building of the former Lutheran church, which nowadays is called State Philharmonic, a branch of the Mariinsky Theater, in the historical downtown of Vladikavkaz, was completed.
Georges: you will not believe it! In Venice, I do not remember the name of the temple… One to one, like our Philharmonic, one to one!

The building of the Lutheran Church was built in 1866, more than 150 years ago, in the spirit of late church Gothic.

The church was closed in the 1930s. First, the building was given to the club of the Union of Builders. Later, in 1944 the State Philharmonic of the Republic of North Ossetia was opened in the building of the church.

8:40 Oh my God, what a beauty!
9:25 Let's go further. Zoroastrianism.
10:30 The village of Karmadon

Our choice finally fell on the travel agency Tourism Ossetia.

I contacted the guys from Tourism Ossetia via Whatsapp. As a result, three excursions were planned. We were going to visit three remarkable places in the mountains: KARMADON, DARGAVS, and MIDAGRABIN.

The Karmadon Gorge, or, another name, the Genaldon Gorge, is located at an altitude of 750 to 1200 meters above sea level. Genaldon - translated from Ossetian means a river in a hemp gorge. However, we have not checked whether this name corresponds to reality.

A little further upstream, another river joins the Genaldon, the Kolka, which in Ossetian means a cliff, a rocky coast. And in the upper reaches of the gorge there are two glaciers: Kolka and Mayli.

In the fall of 2002, the famous Russian director and actor Sergei Bodrov came to Vladikavkaz with his film crew to shoot just one scene of his movie The Courier. On September 18, the film crew arrived in Vladikavkaz. On September 20, the group was supposed to go to the Karmadon Gorge to shoot the scene.

That day, the filmmakers waited a long time for transportation to take them to the mountains, and the start of work had to be postponed from nine in the morning to one in the afternoon. This delay cost the lives of everyone who was on the set that day.

Shooting continued until seven in the evening, when work had to stop due to the lack of daylight. The group gathered the equipment and prepared to return to the city. And at this time, at 8 p.m., a block of the hanging glacier with a volume of about 8 million cubic meters fell from the eastern spur of the mountain Dzhimarai Khokh from a height of 4350 meters and fell on the rear part of the Kolka glacier. This resulted in a fatal ice collapse and a mudslide.

The total volume of the moving ice-rock mass reached 130 million cubic meters, its width was about 200 meters and its length more than 11 kilometers.

The main part of the flow ended at the crevice of the Karmadon Gate. But at least 10 million cubic meters flowed through the gate.

The mudslide swept down the river valley at a speed of 150 - 200 km/h, crushing everything in its path. Escape was absolutely impossible!

The mudslide completely covered the Karmadon Gorge, where Sergey Bodrov and his film crew were, in just 20 minutes.

125 people became victims of the disaster.

Within hours after the tragedy became known, almost all the residents of the surrounding villages arrived to help. After a three-month rescue operation, only nineteen bodies were found. For the next two years, volunteers worked every day at the crash site. Right on the glacier, they set up a camp called Hope. Hoping that someone could survive by hiding in the tunnel.

Here you can see the top of the tunnel arch. As you can see, it is completely filled with rocks... of course, it was not realistic to escape here... the hopes were not to be fulfilled...

Oh my god, what a beauty!
What power, harmony and strength
Clear air, clean rivers
Ossetia has given us so generously...
Mountain gorges of the highest beauty
Crystal waters of gushing rapids
Alpine meadows of tender grass
Stones and ice of austere temples

From the world of food, TV and 5G.
Rocking and shaking on the chair.
We suddenly found ourselves in a world of ice and peaks
On the glacier, with the magical name Skazsky

And now we're heading to an amazing place, one of the most famous gorges in mountainous Ossetia, Tsey Gorge.

Tsei Gorge begins just behind the village of Buron, located on the Transcaucasian Highway on the right bank of the Ardon River, about 80 kilometers southwest of Vladikavkaz.

STALIN
At the entrance to the high mountain village of Tsey, you'll certainly notice a huge granite boulder, about four meters high, standing right on the edge of the road. , but the fact that on it, on the side facing the beginning of Tsey Gorge, there's a portrait of Joseph Stalin. And on the back of the boulder there's a portrait of the great Ossetian poet and educator Kosta Khetagurov.
I don't know how true it's, but it's said that when Khrushchev came to power, he ordered to throw this boulder into the abyss. But the very next day the villagers, unhappy with Stalin's fall, returned the huge boulder to its place. And even then, it's said, they guarded the stone image for a while with weapons in their hands so that such a thing wouldn't happen again.
And here it must be made clear that this veneration of the Ossetians for Joseph Stalin isn't based on an empty square ... There are good reasons to believe, even if historians still argue on this point, that Stalin himself, through his father, was an Ossetian.

RECOM
Alagir Gorge, which includes Tseyskoye Gorge, is located not only in the center of North Ossetia, but of the entire North Caucasus. This is the only gorge that the Ossetians and their ancestors, the Alans, never left. No matter what happened, no matter what bloody battles the Ossetians participated in, in Alagir Gorge the warlike people survived and were reborn.

In Tsey Gorge there's the oldest Ossetian sanctuary - Rekom, which serves as the main place of worship for the most powerful sky god of the Ossetian pantheon, Dzuar Uastirdzhi.

The name Rekom is originally Ossetian and dates back to ancient times. There are various interpretations, but given the special role of the falcon bird in Ossetian mythology, it can be assumed that Rekom is a cut off from the Ossetian Uarikom which means falcon canyon.
The building itself is a log house built without nails from thick pine logs.

According to the legend, the Recom is God's creation... men weren't involved in any way in the construction of the sanctuary. It was created on the spot where one of God's tears was shed over the fallen nart Batraz.

Rekom is revered as one of the oldest and most important shrines of Ossetia ... On one of the bells of the sanctuary there's preserved an inscription which says: The prayer book of Digoria and Dvaletia, the sanctuary of the whole country of Ossetia.

And here's another visiting card of Tsey - the mount Monk. The mount got its name because of the striking resemblance to the hood - the headdress of monks.

Winter in Tsey Gorge is mild - the air temperature rarely drops below minus ten degrees Celsius, which makes skiing here very pleasant.

Tsey has long been a popular place for ski lovers. Since the 60s of the last century, people have been coming to the gorge in large numbers to ski. The ski season starts in December and ends in April. The altitude difference in the ski resort is 920 meters.

The village of Kamunta is the highest mountain village in North Ossetia! It is located in the Digorsky Gorge at an altitude of 1934 meters above sea level.

They named the village in honor of one of the first people who settled in this area ... And his name was Kamun.

Scientists trace the origin of the ancient settlement Kamunta to the late Bronze Age - that is about one and a half millennia before Christ.

Just imagine that! One and a half thousand years before Christ! Therefore, when you walk through the narrow, rocky streets of the village, you are seized by an inexplicable excitement... You have the feeling of standing on the edge of a precipice, on the steep slope of the rock of time, and looking suspiciously into the swirling darkness of world history...

A thousand and a half years before the birth of Christ lived a simple man... Ossetian... Alan... his name was Kamun... Almost four thousand years have passed, and his name still lives... is not it a miracle?!

Once upon a time, in the early days of Alans, Kamunta flourished... For the village was located directly on one of the most important trade routes between China and Russia, on the famous Great Silk Road.

According to our guide Alan, the road that runs along the opposite slope of the gorge is part of the former Great Silk Road.

Around the village there are numerous burial sites, where archeologists have found a large number of jewelry of the Alan tribal nobility, ceramics, coins, and so on.

At present, only 16 people live in Kamunta. However, on holidays due visits of guests and relatives, this number increases to 27.

Another interesting fact is that Kamunta village is listed in the Russian Book of Records as a record holder, as on May 9, 2016 the Immortal Regiment parade took place in Kamunta. The staff of the book recorded the highest mountain procession of the Immortal Regiment in Russia.

And we climb to the top of the mountain where the village of Kamunta is located. About 2,000 meters above sea level. Locals call this place the Dog Rock.

The Dog Rock is a rocky outlier that stands on the very edge of a cliff. In ancient times, criminals sentenced to death were thrown from this rock. Such execution was considered the most humane. Moreover, the execution of the sentence was always entrusted to the relatives of the offender, in order to exclude a blood feud with the executors.

Why was the rock called a dog? No, not because it looks like a dog ... literally translated from Ossetian, it sounds like A place to throw dogs ... And if you consider that people usually call criminals lousy dogs - everything immediately becomes their place ...
It is clear that in Ossetia there was more than one such rock with a similar name.

However, it should be noted that such a cruel punishment was not often used, but only for very serious crimes. In Ossetia the following were considered as such ...

Treason
Intentional spreading of contagious diseases
Violation of the custom of hospitality, i.e. murder or robbery of a guest
Patricide
Incest

The painting you saw at the beginning of my story about the Dog Rock is by the famous Ossetian artist Maharbek Tuganov. It is called Dog Rock.
