Melekeok Palau - The World's Least Populated Capital City

Melekeok Palau - The World's Least Populated Capital City in Palau

Melekeok, state in Palau, western Pacific Ocean. It is located on the east coast of the country’s largest island, Babelthuap. Ngerulmud, the site of the country’s capital, is in Melekeok state; in 2006 the Palau government transferred the capital there from Koror city, on the island of Koror.

The primary focus of activity in the area is the large Neoclassical capitol complex, built on land donated by leading residents of Melekeok state and completed in 2006. Its domed central building, where the Olbiil Era Kelulau (National Congress) meets, resembles the United States Capitol.

The World's Least Populated Capital City - Ngerulmud, Palau

Ngerulmud, Palau - The World's Least Populated Capital City

Ngerulmud is the seat of government of the Republic of Palau, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean. It replaced Koror City, Palau's largest city, as capital in 2006. The settlement is located in the state of Melekeok on Babeldaob, the country's largest island, located 20 kilometres (12 miles) northeast of Koror City and 2 km (1 mile) northwest of Melekeok City.

A 2013 piece in The Wall Street Journal reported that the capitol building, which was unsuited to the local climate, had put Palau in debt, and a fault in the ventilation system had recently caused a mold infestation. In April 2013, Ngerulmud's post office was closed permanently, as part of cost-cutting measures implemented by the postmaster, Tommy Sinsak.

In July 2014, Ngerulmud hosted the official opening of the 45th Pacific Islands Forum. However, the majority of events at the forum were held in Koror, with the leader's retreat held in Peleliu State.[10][11] In February 2016, Ngerulmud hosted the 16th Micronesian Presidents' Summit, which was attended by the presidents of Palau, the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia.

This is Babeldoab Island.

It is the largest island in the Republic of Palau.

It is in the western Caroline Islands, and the second largest island in the Micronesia region of Oceania. It is also known as the “Big Island” of Palau.

Despite its size it is one of the least populated islands in the pacific.

Babeldaob is located northeast of Koror Island, and its northern portion contains the site of the new national capital, Ngerulmud.

The southern end of the island is in Airai State, Palau's second-most populous state.

Unlike most of the islands of Palau, Babeldaob is mountainous. It contains Palau's highest point, the 242meter -tall Mount Ngerchelchuus.

Visitors to the big island of Palau can explore 10 Palauan States in a day. It is possible to rent a car for a day, drive the round course loop, and visit all of the highlights Babeldoab has to offer…such as traditional ceremonial Bai’s, WWII relics, amazing waterfalls, and mountainous hikes.

Join us for one adventurous day on the Big Island of Palau!

Our adventurous day on Babeldoab Island begins in the state of Koror the most populated of Palau’s states. After crossing over the Koror-Babeldoab Bridge we enter the Palauan State of Airai.

Airai State is home to Palau’s international airport as well as several significant historical sites. Our first stop is an abandoned WWII Japanese Communications Center known as Kaigun Sho.

After exploring the crumbling walls and twisted steel of Kaigun Sho we head down the road into the historic village of Airai to visit the Airai Bai. A magnificent 200-year-old ceremonial meetinghouse.

Just a mile further down the road we reach the Airai harbor, home to the Airai War Canoe, a traditional canoe hand crafted by the village elders.

After our Airai experience we travel north into the state of Nehesar for a visit to the tiered falls of Mesekelat.

After a fantastic hike and swim at Mesekelat Falls we get back in the car and drive north into Melekeok state…home to the Palauan Capitol city of Ngerulmud. It is the smallest capitol city in the world. The entire state of Melekeok has only 318 residents.

Back in the car we now travel north through 5 more Palauan states, ending in the northern most state on Babeldoab known as Ngarchelong. We are amazed to find that in just 30 minutes we have passed through half of Palau’s Babeldoab states.

Ngarchelong is at the northernmost tip of the island and is home to two more ancient and modern historically significant sites.

The first historically significant site is the Badrulchau Stone Monoliths. One oral history states that gods or supernatural beings constructed the columns for the Palauan people as supports for a special Bai meetinghouse.

The second historically significant site is the WWII Japanese Lighthouse known as Todai.

Back in the car we begin our journey southwest into Ngiwal State to take a jungle trek to visit Ngardmau waterfall, Palau’s most visited waterfall.

Ngatpang state is the location of our last stop on this loop around Babeldoab. It is home to the remote and little visited Ngatpang Tabecheding Waterfall. The hike across the top of the waterfall, and its spectacular rainforest setting, make Tabecheding Water a fantastic last adventure, before we head back to Koror.

Airai Bai in Airai, Palau

The Airai Bai (Men's Meetinghouse of Airai) in Palauan is a traditional meetinghouse in the Airai municipality on Babeldaob, the largest island in the island nation of Palau. It is located in the center of the village on a stone platform that had previously held earlier bais, and is located at the junction of two traditional stone pathways. The building is 68 by 20 feet, rising to a height of 40 feet at its peak. Its facade and interior beams are decorated with depictions of Palauan legends. It was built around 1890, and underwent a major restoration in the 1970s. The building and site have long been the spiritual and civic centerpiece of the community.

The building was listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places in 1976, a time when Palau was part of the United States Trust Territories of the Pacific.
