TOP 3 places to see in New Plymouth/Taranaki New Zealand
This video has the Top 3 places to see in the small town of New Plymouth Taranaki. New Plymouth is located on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. It is known for its 'sunny climate' and beautiful art galleries and beautiful parks.
In this video, I visited 3 places which I think are the most important places to see in New Plymouth. First is Pukekura Park, which is described as the 'jewel of New Plymouth'. It is a massive park that extends up to 52 hectares and is located at the heart of the city. I parked my car on Shortland Street and entered the park from there. I also tried their coffee at a cafe called 'Tea House on the Lake'. They also have this man-made waterfall that turns on by pressing a button. The park is actually so huge that we didn't have time to navigate through it as we didn't have enough time.
Next, we went to Te Rewa Rewa Bridge which is a pedestrian and bicycle shared bridge across the Waiwhakaiho River in New Plymouth. On a good day, you can see Mount Taranki from there. By the looks of it, it kind of looks like the ribs of a dinosaur.
Lastly, we went to the Taranki/Egmont visitor centre located 30 minutes from the city centre. This is where you can see Mt. Taranaki up close if you don't fancy doing the hike up to the summit. They also have different day hikes that span from 1-4 hours and 8-10 hours for the summit climb. If you're into the Maori history and culture they have displays at the top level and also a safety video before climbing Mt. Taranki.
Before coming home, we checked out The Three Sisters and Elephant Rock which located 1 hour 45 min north of New Plymouth. This place has the spectacular rock formation of the 'three sisters' and the big elephant rock.

20 Best Places to Visit in New Zealand
New Zealand is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It consists of two main landmasses—the North Island and the South Island —and over 700 smaller islands. It is the sixth-largest island country by area and lies east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and south of the islands of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. The country's varied topography and sharp mountain peaks, including the Southern Alps, owe much to tectonic uplift and volcanic eruptions. New Zealand's capital city is Wellington, and its most populous city is Auckland.

Iconic Destinations in New Plymouth, New Zealand | NZ Travel Vlog 2 of 3
After a 2.5 hour drive from Waitomo, we arrived at New Plymouth in the Taranaki region of New Zealand. We were really excited to visit New Plymouth to catch majestic views of Mt Taranaki (aka Mount Egmont). We were blessed with clear blue skies during our time there so we got to see Mount Taranaki from almost everywhere in the city!
First up though we visited Pukekura Park. Pukekura Park is famous for its tranquil gardens, red Poet's Bridge and the cricket grounds is where a scene from The Last Samurai movie (the one that has Tom Cruise in it) was filmed. Mt Taranaki bears a strong resemblance to Mt Fuji in Japan so it was also used as a 'stand in' for Mt Fuji for parts of the movie too. On a very fine day you can see the tip of Mt Taranaki when looking out towards the iconic red Poet's Bridge.
We then headed over to our Airbnb accommodation where we were greeted by 2 super cute fluffy and friendly brother cats - Archie and Elvis. Bridgette's self contained studio was very spacious, clean, comfy and homely.
Bridgette's Airbnb
NB: wifi wasn't available inside the studio as the booster was down during our stay (the listing said wifi wasn't included) but you can access the main house's wifi from Bridgette's driveway if you need which she kindly allows. So if wifi is a must for you, it's best to double check this with Bridgette before booking if it's available again yet.
After a good night's sleep, the next morning we got up bright and early to go climb Paritutu Rock. It's a short roughly 15 minutes climb but it is fairly steep and can be a little challenging especially towards the top where you need to climb rocks and hold onto a chain for safety. For those scared of heights this might be a bit daunting as you also have to go down the same way you go up. The panoramic views from the top of Paritutu Rock are well worth it though with the city, port, seaviews and Mt Taranaki all laid out in front of you.
After all the rock climbing fun we were pretty hungry! Peter found us an Asian restaurant called Koby's Kitchen. It was a great and satisfying meal that helped us refuel to continue the rest of our day! Friendly staff too and a very chill, casual atmosphere which we very much enjoyed.
Koby's Kitchen
Address: 221 Devon Street East, New Plymouth 4312
Hours: Sunday Closed
Mon–Sat 10am–8pm
We next made a quick stop off at Te Rewa Rewa Bridge to check out this popular landmark in New Plymouth. Te Rewa Rewa Bridge is a cool point of interest on New Plymouth's coastal walkway but we didn't stay very long as we were keen to head over to our last spot to spend the remainder of our day - Lake Mangamahoe.
Lake Mangamahoe was picture perfect! A stunningly beautiful lake with birdlife and lush forestry surrounding it but best of all another majestic view of Mount Taranaki. On a beautiful clear day like we had, it was a sight to behold!
In our next vlog, we get even closer to Mount Egmont / Taranaki so be sure to watch our final Taranaki vlog especially if you're traveling to New Plymouth and looking for things to do and must-visit attractions.

Te Rewa Rewa Bridge has views of towering Mount Taranaki. The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery shows contemporary exhibitions. Close by, Pukekura Park has botanical gardens and birdlife. Subalpine forests and waterfalls characterise Egmont National Park to the south. The Puke Ariki is a library and museum space highlighting Taranaki history and Maori artefacts. Close by is Richmond Cottage, an 1850s homestead with native gardens and displays on the pioneering colonial Atkinson and Richmond families. To the south of town, the Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust has rhododendrons and azaleas in a rainforest. Nearby, the TSB Bank Bowls New Zealand Museum has a vast lawn-bowling collection with thousands of items detailing the history of the sport.

New Plymouth has a wet, temperate climate with mild summers (Dec–Feb) and cool winters (Jun–Aug). Peak visiting times are Dec–Jan and Mar–Apr. Popular regional events include the TSB Bank Festival of Lights (Dec–Feb), with light displays in Pukekura Park.
