Top 10 CITIES Switzerland: Most beautiful Swiss Places – The Highlights [Travel Guide]
Switzerland is full of beautiful cities! They are urban, vibrant and very happening. Although Switzerland is a small country, the diversity among the cities is very noticeable. The architecture, the art and the culture differ a lot from city to city. You will find the cities of Switzerland by the river, lake or even in the valleys. Each city has its unique appearance as well as its hotspots and attractions of where to go to.
Sion is the capital of the very touristy canton of Valais (Wallis). Interestingly, Sion is only little known but ranks easily among the most beautiful cities of Switzerland. Sion feels like being in Italy but is a French-speaking city. Sion is vibrant, full of street art and also a foodie hub. The most remarkable however are the two castles up on the hills. Lugano is the largest city of Ticino in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. Lugano lays by the lake, surrounded by the Swiss Alps, and one can feel that Italy is quite near. Lugano charms with its many alleys, culture, lake promenade and its view points. The best view over the surrounding and the city of Lugano you can get at the Monte Brè or Monte San Salvatore. Basel is the hub for the pharmaceutical industry. Basel is an old city and full of culture. It’s important to explore the many alleys with their colorful houses, see the red city hall, the minster and cross the bridges. Basel has a strong connection to its traditions. Important to mention here are the Vogelgryff and the Morgestraich. Bern is the federal city (capital) of Switzerland and the only town that is considered UNESCO world heritage. Very typical for Bern are the many arcades and the fountains. Bern’s old city is really a highlight, thus make sure to spend here at least half a day. Neuchâtel is in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, a town that feels Mediterranean and sort of French/Italian. The highlight of Neuchâtel are the lake promenade, the graffiti alley and the collegiate church with the castle. Schaffhausen is probably the largest and best preserved old city in Switzerland. Schaffhausen’s old town charms with its colorful houses and oriel windows (balcony windows). Schaffhausen is easy to explore by walk it’s pretty much car-free. The best things to do in and around Schaffhausen are a visit to the Museum zu Allerheiligen, walking at the Vordergasse alley, going up to the Munot and seeing the nearby Rhinefalls. The Munot is a centre for culture and hosts various events. Zurich is the largest city in all of Switzerland. It’s the hub for innovation and business but at the same time is a very touristy destination. Zurich’s old city concentrates around the Limmat quay. Walk along the river Limmat, enter the many protestant churches or head up to the Lindenhof and Polyterrase to enjoy a great vista over the old city of Zurich. Zurich is modern but also very cultural; the major event being the Sechseläuten festival. Fribourg is a city on two levels. The old city of perfectly preserved and thus great to explore. Ascend the church tower of the St. Nicolas cathedral or the Loretta chapel to enjoy a brilliant vista. Fribourg city has also some similarities with Luxemburg. Solothurn is the most beautiful baroque city of Switzerland. The old town is full of beautiful houses and concentrates around the river Aare. The major landmark is the St. Urseren Cathedral that offers you a great view from its tower. Lucerne is no doubt the most beautiful of the Top 10 Swiss Cities. Lucerne has been a favorite for many tourists since it offers so many great things such as a charming river promenade along the Reuss, a great view over Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) and the Swiss Alps and otherwise seems very inviting with its alleys and painted houses. Lucerne’s best attractions are the Jesuitenkirche, Gletschergarten museum and many more. Explore Lucerne on the water by taking a boat ride or head up to Mount Pilatus to get a perfect vista over the Swiss Alps and this old city.

8 Things to do in New Bern--North Carolina
The original capital of North Carolina and the home of Pepsi Cola, this metropolitan area is more than the sum of its parts. It is a small city filled with more than historical points of interest. Sited on the banks of the Neuse River, it is filled with beautiful venues. The main downtown shopping district is teaming with places to dine and shop. The waterfront offers amazing riverine views and a host of marinas.
New Bern NC is Now One of Our Favorites! Bears, History, Water & Great Food! What More is Needed!
We have lived in NC for almost two decades but had never visited New Bern until late last year. With Desi's medical issues, we are sticking close to home and are visiting places that we have had on our to visit list that just never happened!
After visiting New Bern we were blown away by how much we enjoyed this little town! We have visited bigger waterfront cities such as Wilmington, NC, Charleston, SC and Savannah, Ga and enjoyed them all. New Bern is like a miniature version of these larger cities but crammed with things to do. If you enjoy history, historical buildings, great architecture, great food and shopping and spending some time enjoying the water - we think you will enjoy New Bern as well!
During our time here, we stayed at the New Bern KOA which is a 10 minute ride from the city. The campground is conveniently located for touring not only New Bern but we also visited the towns of Beaufort, Morehead City, Cape Lookout and Fort Macon State Park. All of these are easily done in a day from New Bern. Plus, you can take a ferry from Cape Lookout to see the wild horses! We didn't do that on this trip as was a bit too cold for open water and we were not dressed for it haha.
In New Bern, we visited Tryon Palace which was the Governor's mansion when New Bern was the state capitol (before Raleigh). The full tour, which includes a narrated tour of the main house, was $20 plus tax. This also allows you to enjoy the gardens and the outer buildings at your leisure. Unfortunately, no part of Tryon Palace is dog friendly so only one of us could do the tour at a time. Overall, it took about 2 hours and we felt it was worth the $20! The tickets are purchased at the NC HIstory Center about 2 blocks away. There are also exhibits to explore here as well.
And while at the History Center, we took advantage of their cafe - Lawsons on the Creek which overlooks the water. The food was amazing - especially the Key Lime cheesecake! We didn't have a bad meal while in this town though. We also had some delicious seafood at Persimmons Waterfront (fish and chips) and in historic downtown - Morgans Tavern and Grill (fried shrimp). All of these places allowed Desi on the patios.
And finally, we loved driving and walking around the downtown looking for bears (the ceramic kind haha), looking at the old buildings (some built in the 1700's), doing some shopping and of course, visiting the birth place of Pepsi Cola where a soda is still 75 cents! We felt the town was big enough to easily spend a day (or two!) walking, shopping and eating our way around.
We will definitely be going back here and joins the towns of Greenville, SC and Williamsburg, Va as our favorite camping spots in the area.
We hope you enjoy the video. We are currently finishing up our review of the KOA and we are going to do a short video on Beaufort and Fort Macon State Park in the coming weeks.

We had such a great time with these guys, and I'm glad we filmed some of it as this area really is a gem for past and present history, and just a very fun and comfortable area to hang out and relax in.

From Wikipedia:
New Bern, formerly called Newbern, is a city in Craven County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 29,524, which had risen to an estimated 29,994 as of 2019.[8] It is the county seat of Craven County and the principal city of the New Bern Metropolitan Statistical Area.
It is located at the confluence of the Neuse and the Trent rivers, near the North Carolina coast. It lies 112 miles (180 km) east of Raleigh, 80 miles (130 km) north of Wilmington, and 162 miles (261 km) south of Norfolk. New Bern is the birthplace of Pepsi.
New Bern was settled in 1710 by the Palatines and Swiss under the leadership of Christoph von Graffenried. The new colonists named their settlement after Bern, the Swiss region from which many of the colonists and their patron had emigrated.[9] The English connection with Switzerland had been established by some Marian exiles who sought refuge in Protestant parts of Switzerland. There were also marriages between the House of Stuart and notable people in the history of Calvinism. The colonists later discovered they had started their settlement on the site of a former Tuscarora village named Chattoka. This caused conflicts with the Tuscaroras who were in the area.
New Bern is the second-oldest European settled colonial town in North Carolina, after Bath. It served as the capital of North Carolina from 1770 to 1792. After the American Revolution (1775–1783), New Bern became wealthy and quickly developed a rich cultural life. At one time New Bern was called the Athens of the South,[10] renowned for its Masonic Temple and Athens Theater. These are both still very active today.
New Bern has four historic districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places; their numerous contributing buildings include residences, stores and churches dating back to the early eighteenth century. Within walking distance of the waterfront are more than 164 homes and buildings listed on the National Register. Also nearby are several bed and breakfasts, hotels, restaurants, banks, antiques stores and specialty shops. The historic districts contain many of the city's 2,000 crape myrtles—its official flower—and developed gardens. New Bern has two Local Historic Districts, a municipal zoning overlay that affords legal protection to the exteriors of New Bern's historic structures.
