Baghdad has several, my friends just came to pick me up and take me here for a few hours! this was a week or so ago.. im still in Iraq and still travelling around and trying to edit as i go!!
I am quite surprised at how family oriented Iraq is compared to many other countries ive been to! Its just so nice to see people out enjoying themselves ,laughing and having fun..its so sad to think what the people here have been through all those years but can still laugh and have smiles on their faces and enjoy themselves and each other . visit Iraq :)

My time in southern Iraq continued with a Late Night Street Food Tour in the Iraqi city of Nasiriyah!
Nasiriyah is very lively at night, especially because its so hot during the day. My first stop was a café along the road to get some Iraqi chai!

A lot of local gentlemen were hanging out in chairs on the side of the street. They were all relaxing and taking in the night. The Iraqi chai was too hot, so I poured it into a saucer to cool it off. It cools it off by at least 10 degrees!
Then, we walked down the street, past lots of other shops, to go get some food! We’d be getting some kebda, or liver and kidney kebabs! A gentleman at the shop fed me some of his. It was so tasty and smoky, with a nice iron flavor.
Next, we got some kubba saray, which is a dense dough ball similar to a matzo ball, which is stuffed with lamb. It comes with beef, tomatoes, and broth poured on top. It’s a very tasty comfort food. I love the prominence of lamb in Iraqi cuisine!
The vendor there wouldn’t accept my money. He was too kind! We arrived at the shawarma spot and headed inside. Then, I tried some chili peppers and then headed into the kitchen, where they were making burgers, samosas, and huge falafel sandwiches. I wanted a sandwich and some shawarma!
They had lots of pickles, tomatoes, cucumbers, and fries as well. I tried some falafel and some fries. The fries were still scorching hot! The vendors there couldn’t stop feeding me! They were so friendly!
Then, they started building my falafel sandwich. I added some chilies, some amba, and a cucumber-yogurt sauce called jajik. It ws very flavorful and contained nice eggplant as well. I loved adding more chilies!
Next, Jafar let me try some of his chicken shawarma. I really liked it with the amba. It was really tasty, but I was already starting to get full. The roasted eggplant in it was the absolute best! Then, I washed it down with a fruit shushie.
Then, just as we were about to leave, they asked me to try some fries, which they topped with macaroni in tomato sauce! It was unique and very tasty. Buried beneath the macaroni was an Iraqi burek, which contains lamb! It was to die for!
Then, we headed to get some sweets! We tried some nuts from a vendor and raced to the sweets shop, as all the shops would be closing within the next 20 minutes. We entered the oldest sweets shop in the sweet, where we saw lots of types of baklava, Turkish delights, biscuits, and jalebi!
The shop owner was too kind. He gave us heaping portions of multiple items to try. It was too much! Our first sweet was Nutella knafeh, which was thick with a crispy layer of noodles and doused in sugar syrup. It was the best sweet ever!
Next was a cream-filled baklava, which was a major sugar rush. We had another baklava, as well as another type of knafeh that was like pure sugar. The crispy layers in the baklava blew my mind, but the Nutella knafeh was on another level! I was ready to pop!
Finally, we headed to our final stop, which was just about to close. It was a street vendor selling khirret, a very rare and special sweet from the marshlands of southern Iraq. It’s very expensive at $50 USD for a kilo!
It’s powdery and chalky but not flavorless. It wasn’t my favorite, but I could tell it would be good with some chai! And that’s it for our nighttime street food tour of Nasiriyah, Iraq!

First, I go to a pizzeria, to try an Iraqi pizza. Surprisingly, I don't succeed to pay for my pizza. Then, I go to explore the night market of Nasiriyah, and as soon as I enter, I meet a lovely group of jolly young Iraqi. Then, I continue the exploration of the market, I buy socks, and I finish the video by showing you the 4000 years old ziggurat of Ur.

We left Baghdad heading to the marshes of Nasiriyah. After 5 long bus ride we reached the famous Chibayish Marshes near Nasiriyah city for lunch and a boat ride in the Marshes.

Iraqi Seafood Feast in Nasiriya Iraq! Iraqi Food Mountain!

After a brief stop in the legendary city of Karbala, my trip through Iraq continued in Nasiriyah, a city in the southern part of the country.
There, we’d be having a traditional Mesopotamian fish dish called mahrotha at a restaurant run by Chef Ali Sido. It’s almost impossible to find in restaurants and is only usually made in people’s homes.

Jafar (my guide from Bil Weekend), my friend Tasos, and I headed into the kitchen to watch him work. Fish is popular in southern Iraq because of the prevalence of water there.
Mahrotha is made from dried fish, tomato paste, fresh tomatoes, and spices. Its roots come from ancient Mesopotamia, and the fish can be found in the rivers and the marshes. He boils the dried fish, tears it into smaller pieces, and remove the bones. Then, he adds the tomatoes, tomato paste, and onions.
Chef Ali was a whiz with the knife. He chopped everything super fast! Then, he added oil and butter to a pot, chopped some fresh garlic, and added them and the onions to the pot. The aroma was incredible! Then, he added the fresh tomatoes and tomato paste. The ingredients are simple, but it will be full of flavor!
Next, he added turmeric, pepper, and salt before adding the final ingredient: the dried fish. It looked and smelled amazing! Finally, you add water to the pot and cover it for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, he had some rice cooking in a separate pot. He gave me some of the hakaka, or crispy rice from the bottom!
Then, Chef Ali jumped on the appetizer, which is small fish that are breaded and fried. I watched him gut and clean the fish before salting it, dredging it in a mix of water and spices, and breading them with flour. Then, they go into the frying pan!
They came out golden brown. He added rice, two zuri (fried fish), and fresh tomatoes, onion, and lemon to our plates. He fed me some of the zuri, which was really tasty! Then, he tore up some bread, and added the mahrotha and its broth on top!
Then, you eat it tashreeb-style. It was salty and tomato-rich, and I loved the texture of the soaked bread. I usually don’t love dried fish, but this dish was exceptional! It was my favorite dish of the trip so far!
It contained some bones, so be careful. I also liked eating the zuri with a bit of lemon and bread. It was so buttery and paired well with the rice and the pickles with dates and pomegranate! The masgouf was also excellent, but the mahrotha was on another level!
Then, we headed to the back to see the dried fish before it’s boiled. It dries for two weeks! Chef Ali was so kind and friendly. Then, we drove 40 minutes to the ancient city of Ur!
Ur was a Sumerian city-state in ancient Mesopotamia. It’s known for its ruins, especially the massive Zigurrat of Ur, which stands 66 feet tall and dates back to the 21st century BC, though it was rebuilt in the 6th century BC. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
The Sumerians invented iconographic written language and Sumerian, the two oldest forms of writing in the world. The ziggurat was discovered in 1922. Parts have been renovated while others are the original bricks.
The patron deity of Ur was the Sumerian moon god, Nanna. I climbed to the top of the stairs leading to the top of the ziggurat. On a brick, I got to see some of the original first writings there! The ziggurat is so well preserved because it was covered in sand for thousands of years!
Next, we walked to a small temple with two rooms that once served as the entrance to a passage leading to the Temple of Nanna. We also saw a royal palace and there are royal tombs nearby!
Finally, we drove to the house of the prophet Abraham. There were lots of arched passageways and a room with shelves. From the roof, we could see the number of rooms!

Chinese firms to build Iraq's Nasiriyah Airport, Sadr City
Chinese companies will build Nasiriyah Airport and nearly 90,000 houses in Sadr City in Iraq under an oil-for-projects agreement the two countries signed in 2019, an Iraqi official was quoted on Sunday as saying.
Obstacles that have obstructed the agreement over the past few months have been resolved and China would soon provide funds in exchange for the supply of 100,000 barrels of Iraqi crude, said Sabah Abdul Lateef, an adviser to the Iraqi Prime Minister.
He told the official Iraqi news agency that four major projects would be executed in Iraq shortly under the oil-for-projects deal which was finalized in September 2019 and stipulated the execution of projects in Iraq by Chinese firms in exchange for crude supplies.
The projects comprise the construction of Nasiriyah Airport in the Southern Dhi Qar Governorate, the building of nearly 90,000 houses in Sadr City in the capital Baghdad, the construction of 1,000 hospitals through Iraq and sewage networks in Baghdad.
“These projects will be carried out in line with the Iraq-China agreement after all legal issues that have faced the agreement have been resolved,” Abdul Lateef said.

🇮🇶 Cutting Okra in Baghdad Iraq #shorts
I stumbled across a really efficient and cool Okra vendor who was busy precisely cutting the Okra and preparing it for sale. This market was beautiful and magical but this Okra was delicious and I had to buy some. This was filmed during my recent trip to Iraq while in Baghdad in September of 2022.
