Nantwich Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Cheshire, and around five miles southwest of Crewe, is the town of Nantwich.
The origins of Nantwich go back to the Roman era, during which time it was a salt-producing settlement, serving the nearby garrisons at Deva Victrix (a.k.a. Chester). During the Norman Invasion, Nantwich was burned to the ground, with only one building remaining.
In 1583 the Great Fire of Nantwich broke out to the east of the River Weaver. The fire lasted for nearly three weeks, killing two and destroying hundreds of buildings. Upon hearing of this, Queen Elizabeth I ordered a nationwide collection of funds to rebuild Nantwich, to which she contributed £1,000. It is for this reason that several late Tudor buildings can be found in the town. Nantwich has one of the highest concentrations of listed buildings in the country, with over 100 in the town.
During the English Civil War, Nantwich sided with Parliament. On the 25th of January 1644 the Battle of Nantwich took place following a six-week siege, ending in victory for the Parliamentarians. Since 1973, the events of the battle have been reenacted as 'Holly Holy Day' on each anniversary.
At the peak of the salt industry, Nantwich was home to around 400 salt houses in 1530. By 1605 this had declined to 216, and by the 1850s there was just one left in the town. Part of this decline was down to the re-discovery of salt beds at Northwich, 15 miles to the north, in the 1670s. The 'wich' suffix denotes brine springs or wells, whilst 'nant' comes from the Welsh for brook or stream.
In spite of the decline in the salt industry, Nantwich was still able to thrive in the centuries that followed. New industries emerged including leather, cotton coach-making, clock-making and cheese-making. In addition to having several nearby farms producing the renowned Cheshire cheese, Nantwich is host to the International Cheese Awards - an annual event which started in 1897.
In 1858 Nantwich received a railway connection. It had narrowly missed out on being a calling point for the Grand Junction Railway on what is now the West Coast Main Line. The manufacturers instead opted for neighbouring Crewe to be the junction station, despite its population of just 70 at the time of the 1831 census. Nantwich to this day is situated on the Welsh Marshes line between Crewe and Newport.
