Deep in the woods, just outside of the city of Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, is an ominous crack in the ground called The Abyss. This giant fissure in the earth was caused by an earthquake, and is available for hikers to visit.
Join Marti from Down the Wrabbit Hole as she and her family explore The Abyss, from going down the wrong hiking path (was it even a path?) to peering down into the blackness of The Abyss. Learn the location of the proper trailhead and what to expect when visiting this fascinating phenomenon!

WHAT to See & Do In NANAIMO, BC
We visited the city of Nanaimo, BC on Vancouver Island where we took in some of the best things to do there. Nanaimo is a port city and has many parks and hiking trails along its coast, but we found the best views overlooking the city at the top of Mt. Benson. To fuel our climb we made a detour to the Old Town Bakery in Ladysmith, just 20 minutes south of Nanaimo for the best cinnamon buns on Vancouver Island. They were so delicious and definitely worth the wait in line. Jay also got in the water to snorkel at Neck Point, and we went paddle boarding at the Cedar boat launch and beach with friends who recently moved to Nanaimo. Our friends share why they moved here and we are so happy for them.

At its heart, the Nanaimo Museum displays exhibits on the city’s industries and indigenous peoples. Near the Harbourfront Walkway, the Bastion is an 1853 wooden tower with cannon firings in summer. Shops and cafes fill the Old City Quarter. Offshore, on Newcastle Island, trails lead to beaches and First Nations sites.
