Murwillumbah Farmers Market - Australia - Walking Tour
This popular and regular Showground Farmers Market event is held every Wednesday from 7am – 11am, rainy or sunny at this Northern Rivers NSW, Murwillumbah Show Ground, about 500 metres from Murwillumbah town centre (Murwillumbah CBD). Entry is free. Access is from 37 Queensland Road. You can meet friendly, passionate growers and producers, in person, who market their fresh produce here. Everything is sourced from locally within an area of around sixty km radius, including the Tweed Valley. Not only all this but there is live music and a festive, friendly atmosphere, which adds up to a great morning event for your day. I was surprised at the great attendance of market goers just enjoying sitting chatting and devouring snacks and drinks from onsite food vendors in this great open air rural environment. It’s a great daytrip Murwillumbah open air event if you are traveling the east coast Australia or holidaying on Australia's Gold Coast or destination Tweed is on your explorations itinerary.
If you love open air markets, Murwillumbah Makers and Finders Market is held just a km from here in Knox Park in the centre of town on the 3rd Saturday every month, 9am – 2pm. Both these markets are just an easy 30-minute drive from Australia’s famous Gold Coast. The route follows the Tweed River for a good part of the way.

Murwillumbah Town Centre - Northern Rivers NSW - 4K Walking Tour
Murwillumbah Town Centre - with Art Deco architecture.
Come for a 4K virtual walk with me around Murwillumbah town centre, Murwillumbah CBD, in the Northern Rivers NSW region on east coast Australia. Unlike my previous videos, I have not used background music tracks. Rather, I have sought to capture the live ambiance and vibe of the town by recording the natural street sounds in stereo in order to showcase it as the Murwillumbah travel destination (or destination Tweed) or as an entertaining Murwillumbah day trip outing starting from the Gold Coast Australia or Byron Bay. In these current times of travel restrictions, if we can't, in reality, visit the destinations like Murwillumbah, we can nevertheless take a Murwillumbah virtual travel experience by video. So, come visit northern New South Wales country town, Murwillumbah in the Tweed Valley!
Art Deco Architecture of the Town:
The footage focuses on the retro appeal of Murwillumbah town centre CBD. It is prominent in its architecture, shopfront windows and facades. There are some fine examples of Art Deco architecture and design displayed in many of the buildings. Also contributing to its charm is street alfresco dining, cafes, pubs, incidental townsfolk and even street buskers. Prior to travel restrictions, a wonderful jazz band regularly played on Sundays in the canopied sidewalk area outside the Courthouse Hotel. What a treat for visiting travellers.
Location of Murwillumbah:
Murwillumbah in the Northern Rivers NSW region on east coast Australia and is about thirty minutes’ drive from the Queensland Gold Coast, 40 minutes from Byron Bay, 30 mins from Mullumbimby and 45 mins from Nimbin. The route follows the Tweed River and sugar cane fields along the way. Murwillumbah is situated adjacent to a fertile volcanic soil flood plain inside the long since extinct Tweed Valley Volcano caldera. Sugar cane, soybeans and cattle are the main agricultural industries. Distinctively shaped Mount Warning, aka Wollumbin, the 1,156 m elevation remnant core of the volcano is conspicuous in the Tweed Valley.
History:
In the 1840s, extracting timber from the region was the dominant activity in the area. Dramatically, most of the Murwillumbah town centre was burned to the ground by fire in 1907. In 1978, the Bank of New South Wales, the building now occupied by the Westpac Bank, was broken into by the ‘Magnetic Drill Gang’ who got away with $1.7 million cash. They were never caught.
Floods:
Periodically, the Tweed river and Rous River overflow their banks during periods of torrential rainfall. Prior to a flood wall being built to protect the town, floodwaters reached nearly up to the Murwillumbah town centre shop awnings. The Murwillumbah flood levee or Murwillumbah flood wall has become known as the Murwillumbah Graffiti Wall. It’s not actually graffiti but rather is urban street art created by talented artists that decorates it. The highest recorded flood occurred in 2017 when the water rose to about 40 cm short of the 6.3 m levee. I have personally experienced the 2013, 2014 and 2017 floods.
Accommodation:
In the town centre there is the 4.5-star Imperial Hotel.
At the top Wollumbin Street is the 3.7-star Murwillumbah Motor Inn.
A little out of town there is the 4.6-star Gallery Motel and the 4.1-star Tweed River Motel.
Another option is to seek accommodation on the lower Gold Coast and visit as a Murwillumbah day trip.
Murwillumbah Arts, Market Events and Travel Events:
Murwillumbah Showground Farmers Markets are held in the Show Ground every Wednesday.
Murwillumbah Makers & Finders Market is held in Knox Park on the 3rd Saturday of each month, 9am - 2 pm . (
Adjacent to the Regent Cinema is the M|Arts Precinct building behind a classic Art Deco façade. This venue houses fascinating artists and makers and their novel studios set up inside creatively renovated shipping containers.
Just on the outskirts of town is the modern Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Centre which includes a very pleasant Gallery Café and a Gallery Shop.
The Murwillumbah Arts Trail is an inspiring annual event which follows a trail of venues around town. This is a great activity for travelers and locals alike.
The highly popular event of the Murwillumbah Annual Show is held by the Tweed River Agricultural Society. People travel from afar to enjoy and participate in this event.

Australia's Abandoned Railways: the Casino to Murwillumbah Line in 2022
Train services on the railway line between Casino and Murwillumbah, in far northern New South Wales (Australia), ceased in May 2004. Nearly 20 years later, we take a journey along the line and see what is left of it, the state of the surviving stations and the work underway to convert parts of the line to a 'rail trail' (bicycle/pedestrian path). Photographed in July 2022, with additional material from October 2019, May 2016 and January 1990 (during the final weeks of operation of the former Pacific Coast Motorail Express).

Attunga is a small farming community in the New England region of New South Wales Australia.
History
The name is an Aboriginal word for a high place, and was originally the name for a nearby farm operated by pastoralist John Brown in the 1840s.[2] The land had previously been part of a 313,000-acre (1,270 km2) grant to the Australian Agricultural Company in 1834 and had been used to graze 6,000 sheep.[3]
The village of Attunga was gazetted in 1847[4] but early settlement appears to have been slow. The first recorded burials at the Attunga Cemetery date from 1872 with the earliest inscriptions dated 1881.[5] BHP opened a limestone quarry there in 1919.[6]
Population growth remained slow until the mid-twentieth century. The current population of 633 includes families of commuters to Tamworth. Services in Attunga currently include a primary school, supermarket, hotel and sports ground, and rural fire service headquarters.
The late English singer-songwriter Max Bygraves owned Attunga Park, an 84-hectare farm near the town of Murwillumbah.
Industries
The main industries are sheep and cattle farming, and limestone mining from a mine to the east of the town. The town abuts the Attunga State Forest, a popular walking and camping destination.[7]
The town was served by the Barraba branch railway line until the local station was closed in 1985.
Environmental issues
Recent drought conditions have caused bank erosion along Attunga Creek, as a result of stock movements across and along the creek bed. In 2006 the town of Attunga received funding for a major program of bank stabilisation and revegetation to restrict stock movements to defined corridors near the waterway.[8]
Mobile Phone Blackspot Program
Vodafone will serve the town and surrounding area with mobile phone service as part of the National Blackspot Program from Q4 2016.
