Mosta is the central city famous for its Rotunda Church, which has a huge dome that is the third largest unsupported dome in the whole world with an internal diameter of 37.2 m and walls almost 9.1 m (30 ft) thick.
An interesting fact is that during the Second World War, during the bombing, a 500 kg demolition bomb penetrated the ceiling of the dome and fell inside the church during mass. Fortunately, the charge did not explode and no one was injured. This bomb is displayed inside the rotunda.
Mosta is located in central Malta and has a population of approximately 19,000, making it one of the largest cities on the island of Malta. Around the town of Mosta are the villages of Naxxar, Rabat, Mdina, Burmarrad and Lija.
Mosta is located on the main route that runs from Valletta to Cirkewwa in the north and therefore experiences heavy daily traffic, especially on Constitution Street. Mosta can be reached from the following cities: Valletta, St Julian's, Sliema, Bugibba, Bugibba, Qawra, Mdina, Mosta and Cirkewwa.

Rotunda of Mosta Visit | This is Malta

Quick visit to the Rotunda of Mosta which is also known as the Mosta Dome or the Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady in Mosta, Malta.

Rotunda of Mosta Malta 🇲🇹

The Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, commonly known as the Rotunda of Mosta or the Mosta Dome, is a Roman Catholic parish church and Minor Basilica in Mosta, Malta, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. It was built between 1833 and the 1860s to neoclassical designs of Giorgio Grognet de Vassé, on the site of an earlier Renaissance church which had been built in around 1614 to designs of Tommaso Dingli.

The design of the present church is based on the Pantheon in Rome, has the third largest unsupported dome in the world and is Malta's largest and most famous church. The church narrowly avoided destruction during World War II when on 9 April 1942 a German aerial bomb pierced the dome and fell into the church during Mass, but failed to explode. This event was interpreted by the Maltese as a miracle.
