Akron, Ohio - Driving Tour 4K

Akron (/ˈækrən/) is the fifth-largest city in the U.S. state of Ohio and is the county seat of Summit County. It is located on the western edge of the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau, about 40 miles (64 km) south of downtown Cleveland. As of the 2019 Census estimate, the city proper had a total population of 197,597, making it the 125th largest city in the United States. The Greater Akron area, covering Summit and Portage counties, had an estimated population of 703,505.

The city was founded in 1825 by Simon Perkins and Paul Williams, along the Little Cuyahoga River at the summit of the developing Ohio and Erie Canal.

The name is derived from the Ancient Greek word ἄκρον : ákron signifying a summit or high point. It was briefly renamed South Akron after Eliakim Crosby founded nearby North Akron in 1833, until both merged into an incorporated village in 1836. In the 1910s, Akron doubled in population, making it the nation's fastest-growing city.

A long history of rubber and tire manufacturing, carried on today by The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, gave Akron the nickname Rubber Capital of the World. It was once known as a center of airship development. Today, its economy includes manufacturing, education, healthcare, and biomedical research; leading corporations include Gojo Industries, FirstEnergy, Huntington Bank, and Charter Spectrum.

Notable historic events in Akron include the passage of the Akron School Law of 1847, which created the K–12 system; the popularization of the church architectural Akron Plan, the foundation of Alcoholics Anonymous, the Akron Experiment into preventing goiters with iodized salt, the 1983 Supreme Court case City of Akron v. Akron Center for Reproductive Health; and portions of the 2014 Gay Games.

A racially diverse city, it has seen noted racial relations speeches by Sojourner Truth in 1851—the Ain't I A Woman? speech; W. E. B. Du Bois in 1920;and President Bill Clinton in 1997. In 1914, Marcus Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association in Akron. Episodes of major civil unrest in Akron have included the riot of 1900, rubber strike of 1936, and the Wooster Avenue riots of 1968. Notable individuals from the city include the basketball players LeBron James and Stephen Curry.

This is a great place to go during the Corona Pandemic because of their car hops. You never have to get out of your car. You just back into a space and turn your headlights on and a curb side server runs out to you fully masked.

Gorge Metro Park in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. USA l ThatGuyJunJun

In today's video...we are at Gorge Metro Park in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. USA. Part of the Summit Metro Parks system...the Gorge Metro Park trail lies along the Cuyahoga River and is between two other connected trails...Glens Trail and the Highbridge Trail. The Gorge Trail is 1.8 miles long (2.9km) and has some highlight destinations like a fishing dock, a dam, and a large cave structure. There are restrooms, picnic sites, and an open-air shelter and is pet friendly. Most of the main trail is well maintained but there are some trail parts that are categorized as primitive, which means uneven, steep, and narrow terrain. It's a beautiful park...especially in the Fall...surrounded by the changing foliage alongside the Cuyahoga River. Hope you enjoy it. Thanks for coming along!

Rex Humbard's Tower; Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio

A 500 foot-tall concrete tower built about fifty years ago by area tele-evangelist Rex Humbard. It was originally supposed to be topped by a rotating restaurant, but funding dwindled and it was never completed. It (appears to) now serve as a cell tower. It is visible for many miles from the ground and most people have no idea what the top looks like. Satellite photos are not very high resolution and do not give a good view. It appears to be hollow! No funding to build a restaurant and no funding to remove it, it didn't serve much purpose for decades, but now it appears to have been adapted to the 21st century and given new life. An interesting landmark of the area!

HIKING CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK Ledges Trail + Ledges Overlook, Cuyahoga Valley National ParkTrails Cuyahoga Valley, Ohio Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio
Filmed on #GoPro Hero 8

I had to take a trip this fall to Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Cuyahoga Valley is Ohio's only National Park and the trails are undeniably a reason to visit the park. Both hiking and biking trails available to meet visitors searching for any speed.

I started the trip at Boston Mill Visitor Center and walked around the town of Boston Ohio before heading to the Ledges trailhead.

I needed to explore a variety of Cuyahoga Valley National Park Trails and started with the Ledges Trail. The Ledges Trail at Cuyahoga Valley is a loop that travels through a the Ledges or a gorge close to the Icebox Cave. The Icebox Cave is currently closed to rehabilitate the bat population, but that still leaves plenty to explore on the Ledges Trail.

I ended the day at the Ledges Overlook, a popular sunset spot since it is high and looks west over Cuyahoga Valley.

I spend 2 more days Hiking Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Become a subscriber to be the first to know when the videos post!

Dead Mall - Overview of Chapel Hill Mall - The Next Rolling Acres Mall?

This is just a little tour of what's left of Chapel Hill Mall and what the future holds for this mall as of January 22, 2020.

Chapel Hill Mall has been struggling in recent years. It has fallen behind on utility bills and property taxes, prompting the City of Akron to start the foreclosure process on the mall. JCPenney announced they will be closing their store, the last remaining anchor store at Chapel Hill Mall, on April 24, 2020. The future of the mall is unknown, but looks to be heading in the same direction as Rolling Acres Mall.

Peninsula to Brandywine Falls bike ride at Cuyahoga Valley NP

Connecting two of the most popular areas of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, this 9-mile bike ride takes you from Peninsula to Brandywine Falls. It uses the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, the Old Carriage Trail and the Summit Bike & Hike Trail.

I started at Lock 29 and arrived at Brandywine Falls about an hour and a half later. along the way I passed Stumpy Basin Wetland and boardwalk, the Boston Store, multiple locks from the canal era, beautiful forests and fields.

Brandywine Falls is 65 feet tall and one of the most-visited areas of the national park. It can easily be called the best waterfall in Northeast Ohio.

The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail is one of the best bike trails in Ohio at stretches 110 miles from Cleveland to New Philadelphia. The Summit Bike & Hike Trail is 34 miles from Bedford to Portage County and it was one of the first rails-to-trails conversions in the nation.

If you're spending time in Peninsula in the national park, consider that you can rent a bike at Century Cycles, follow this bike route and see an incredible waterfall! I hope you enjoy the ride. - John

Brandywine Falls - Cuyahoga Valley National Park, OH.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is unlike any National Park I have ever seen. Nestled halfway between the cities of Cleveland and Akron, it is a National Park filled with residential areas, streets, roads and private property. It's basically a really nice organic neighborhood with the Cuyahoga River running through it that is protected and maintained by Federal funds. The crown jewel of this park is Brandywine Falls which is easily accessed via a beautiful wooden boardwalk leading to a beautiful vantage point. There are extensive hiking and biking trails as well as a 2 hour diesel locomotive train ride through the park.

Rolling Acres Mall. A once beautiful, nationally recognized mall for its design; opened in 1975 which would later come to a sharp decline in 2007 and close indefinitely in 2008.

What once stood as a magnificent piece of architecture, including the center of the structure known as The Court of the Twelve Trees has now been thrown to ruins throughout the past 4 years.

This mall housed stores such as O'neil's, Pretzel Time, and JCPenny (Which still oddly stands to this day).

Within its walls, it featured unique light structures beyond its also unique decorations and fountain surrounded by large trees and beautiful foliage. A bubble elevator to get shoppers up and down as well as escalators and stairs. The greenhouse-esque skylight covering the entire center brings the outside in, surrounded by 4 corridors which used to house the many shops.

Broken windows, a few trashed shopping carts, piles upon piles of glass, decay, rotted foliage, security office porno magazines (yeah, really), and a destroyed skeleton of what was once a fountain is all that now remains of this structure.

Below I will link 2 videos to give you even more history on this mall, as well as include the Wiki article.

This first video gives you a bit more on the history and some old photos of when it was fresh and new.

This second video is one that somebody filmed in 2009 only a year after the closing of the mall. Since 2009 the mall has now decayed and been much more destroyed. Torn from end to end.

Enjoy the continental style Parq and its beautiful Indian laurel trees as you watch workmen installing the Promenade fountain and a unique bubble elevator. When the dust settles, some 40 new shops and restaurants will be opening along the Promenade.

Rolling Acres Mall is a retail mall located in the Rolling Acres area of Akron, Ohio, United States. Built in 1975 and expanded several times in its history, it once comprised more than 140 stores, including five anchor stores, a movie theater and a food court. The mall was closed off in 2008, save for the only two anchors still in operation, Sears and JCPenney Outlet. However, in January 2011, Sears Holdings announced the Sears store would close by April 2011. In January 2011, JCPenney announced they would close all outlet stores including the Rolling Acres store. In October 2011, an independent company purchased all of JCPenney's Outlet Stores with plans to rename them and continue to operate them.

Rolling Acres Mall was developed by Forest City Enterprises. It opened in Akron, Ohio with Sears and 21 stores on August 6, 1975, and had more than 50 stores by year's end. JCPenney opened a year later as a second anchor. A new wing, called the Court of Aquarius, was added in 1977, including a large aquarium (which was later removed) and a third anchor store, Montgomery Ward. Further expansion in 1978 comprised a new, two-story wing called the Promenade, comprising a food court called Prom-N-Eat and local chain O'Neil's as a fourth anchor.

A mall-wide renovation was begun, replacing its original earth tones with pastel colors. Two of the anchors would change in the 1980s as well: Montgomery Ward closed in 1986 and was replaced with Higbee's (another local chain), and O'Neil's was merged to May Company Ohio in 1989.

The rest of the Wiki article can be found below.

Abandoned Rolling Acres Mall, Rolling Acres/Akron, Ohio Footage 2009

The gigantic Rolling Acres Mall has been shut down for about 4 years now. My dad does some demo/reconstruction work and he was offered anything he wanted inside the mall by the Demo company. I had the opportunity to ride my bike through the inside with my Camcorder. I didn't get any footage of the lower level. I was down there, but I couldn't take the bike. This once gorgeous late '70s mall has seen better days. Leaky roof has been the main source of problems. Also, thieves have stolen all the copper wiring so there is no possible way for the mall to be lit unless it was completely re-wired. Kinda creepy, with an eerie breeze throughout the whole place. Another freaky thing is that all the plants on the lower level are totally green. They are not fake. Totally healthy but overgrown. I think the roof is so leaky, the plants survive. Sears and JCpenny dpt. stores are still operating. I have no idea what's going to happen to the mall.
