Places to see in ( Le Havre - France )
Le Havre is a major port in northern France's Normandy region, where the Seine River meets the English Channel. It's joined to the city across the estuary, Honfleur, by the Pont de Normandie cable-stayed bridge. Following WWII, Le Havre's heavily damaged city center was famously redesigned by Belgian architect Auguste Perret. Today it features many landmark examples of reinforced-concrete architecture.
Le Havre is a major port town and entry point for ferries arriving in France from the UK, situated on the coast in Upper Normandy on the mouth of the River Seine. Le Havre was very badly damaged during World War II, and much of the city that we see today was as designed by the architect Auguste Perret in the post-war period.
The modernist architecture in Le Havre is unlike any other town in France - and can appear rather 'brutal' to those who aren't enthusiasts of post-war architect. Nonetheless there are some fascinating and noteworthy buildings to admire and a visit is recommended. Note that the redevelopment of the city is so noteworthy that the city has now been designated a UNESCO World heritage site.
A visit to Le Havre will include some particular buildings that are important in understanding the work of Auguste Perret. Your route can start from the Church of Saint Joseph, a post-war building in which the octagonal tower, over 100 metres high, stands out in particular. The work was begun by Auguste Perret, but it was completed after his death by students linked to his school.
Undoubtedly the central point for art in Le Havre is the famous André-Malraux Museum of Modern Art (another modern building but in glass rather than concrete). Known throughout Europe for its collection of Impressionist painters, there is actually much else to enjoy in the museum, including some artefacts in ivory and precious ceramics from Rouen and Normandy.
The Museum highlight is undoubtedly the collection of Impressionist painters, enriched by donations over the course of time and including outstanding works of Monet (1840-1926), undisputed master of the movement (living from 1883 at Giverny, where you can visit his house). In the Museum you can admire the beautiful 'Water Lilies' by Monet.
Among the other sites that attract visitors to Le Havre are the square next to the Town Hall - another building by Auguste Perret, a long concrete building with a tall tower, but the effect is softened by the plants and fountains in the square - and the Cathedral Notre-Dame, which has been extensively restored. To learn more about historic Le Havre you can visit the 'Museum of Old Le Havre' (Musee de l'Ancien Havre). Although nobody would probably choose Le Havre as their holiday resort, the beach also continues to attract visitors: Le Havre was firmly established as a resort in the early 20th century with the establishment of baths and a broad promenade frequented by Parisian tourists.

Someone had a plan to see Paris, someone wanted to go to the mountains or move out to nature and live in a hut in the middle of the forest. Unfortunately, big travel plans are falling apart due to pandemic restrictions.
DISCOVER THE PORT’S MARITIME HISTORY
Honfleur is so enchanting that people often forget it was originally built for trade. The harbour was chosen for its strategic location on the southern bank of the Seine estuary. During the Hundred Years’ War, the French king fortified the port, although that didn’t stop the English taking over for several decades.
Before the French Revolution, Honfleur’s shipowners made their fortune from trading, especially with North America. Samuel de Champlain, one of the most famous explorers associated with the port, headed off from Honfleur to found the Canadian city of Quebec. Lucrative trade for the Honfleur shipping magnates included cod-fishing off Newfoundland and the triangular slave trade.
STROLL AROUND THE VIEUX BASSIN
Wealthy Honfleur families built their multi-storey homes packed tight next to each other, especially around the Vieux Bassin, the heart of the port, where a front-row home overlooking the boats was a real sign of status. Although there are no longer any commercial ships or fishing boats in the Vieux Bassin (they are now moored to larger docks), it’s not uncommon to see yachts there. Shops fight for space along the quays in this extraordinarily picturesque setting, while restaurants set up their outdoor seating across the cobbles.
The neighbourhoods on each side of the Vieux Bassin all have their own character. The neighbourhood to the east is full of interesting buildings including the Church of Saint-Etienne, while that to the west extends uphill to the splendid wooden church of Sainte-Catherine and Honfleur’s main art museums. The neighbourhood to the south of the harbour is more low-key but boasts some lesser-known gems such as the Church of Saint-Léonard and the restored fountains.
FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE IMPRESSIONISTS
Honfleur’s beauty has long attracted artists, with works of art to be found in the town’s many museums and galleries. Honfleur takes particular pride in its Impressionist roots – Claude Monet’s mentor Eugène Boudin was born in the town, and Monet and his contemporaries would often set up their easels at the Ferme Saint-Siméon on the hill above Honfleur, to capture the beautiful light of the Seine estuary.
Visitors to Honfleur can easily explore the Seine Estuary for themselves by taking a stroll through Honfleur’s public gardens to its very own beach, or visiting the Chapel of Notre-Dame de Grâce to look out over Honfleur and beyond. Alternatively, take a boat trip out onto the estuary from Honfleur or even walk right up onto the Pont de Normandie bridge, which affords phenomenal panoramic views of the estuary from above.

Honfleur - Plage de Vasouy - Vue sur Le Havre
La plage du Vasouy se situe à la sortie d’Honfleur en allant en direction de Villerville. Cette grande plage de sable préservée appartient à la commune du Vasouy (qui dépend d’Honfleur). Dans un environnement naturel avec des falaises, on n’oublie pas la proximité de la zone portuaire du Havre.
La plage offre une vue tout simplement incroyable sur le grand port de commerce du Havre, dont les grues chargent et déchargent chaque jour plusieurs milliers de conteneurs venus en cargo des quatre coins du monde.
À moins de 5 km [d'Honfleur], la plage de sable, sur la commune du même nom, bordée de falaises, reste encore sauvage. La faible fréquentation de cette plage (plus faible que celle du Butin, un peu plus loin) a permis de préserver l'environnement.
Sur la plage de Vasouy, chaque été, il est rappelé que la baignade est interdite.
