East Coast Drive - Roche Noir to Post de Flacq

We start at Roche Noir on the east coast, home of caves (lava tunnels) including Cave Madame. The road is one of the prettiest and includes the famous windmills (aka massive scary wind turbines) and a drive through Bras d'Eau national forest. Then onto Poste de Flacq on a new road that would make a great rally stage.

Dagotiere, the friendliest village in Mauritius?

We visit Dagotiere in the Moka District of Mauritius, and it might be one of the friendliest places. Starting with Vishal snack for some great fried chicken we took to the streets. Everyone had a warm welcome and showed us around with a smile. We tried a new snack and ate some peanuts from an old friend and then it was off to Alma, a grand sugar mill chimney. We managed to get some great drone footage, our first of a chimney, I was beaming like a kid. We also checked out the new housing estate opened by Mr. Modi of India and the Mauritian prime minister. A short stop at Dickson lake and a few guavas rounded off a very enjoyable day. Thanks go out to the welcoming people of Dagotiere.

The Vale. Mauritius. The search for Gajacks (Small village with a lot of mysteries)

The Vale was a complete surprise. So many people selling quality street food in such a small area. I missed out on a lot as I went on Friday during mosque. What most people told me was that after 4 the place is really worth a visit, but we will keep it for another time, as Mauritius is huge and there are still hundreds of places to visit.
That's to all the friendly people from The Vale for a great visit.
If anyone can point me in the direction of some great Gajacks, please leave a comment.

Montagne Blanche Mauritius has no worries, Sans Soucci is close by.

From the bustling heart of the town to the outlying suburbs and beyond into the sugarcane fields with its nineteen forties stopover point, there is a relaxed attitude to things. Maybe because Sans Soucci is so close, or maybe the fresh mountain air has something to do with it, but it feels right.

Starting in town, we explored the main street, with its shops and building, including the old cinema, which is for sale. Turning off into one of the numerous diagonal streets, we found roasting chickens and a new mask. After eating some grilled chicken, we headed back to the parking at the post office.

The post office has free parking and is an easy walk into the main town. It is also the old train station. Well preserved stone walls and long used and worn stains with a piece of platform jutting out of the new building. Behind is some more to explore, the part of the train station, not incorporated into the post office.

Off the Sans Soucci, it means no worries, It was an old sugar mill that stopped operating in 1946, that that is what the place looks like. A real blast from the past. It reminded us of an old pre-1930s depression gas station in the American route 66. Great old building and well-looked after.

A stop at the bridge near the medical school, it was easy to access the wall, and the views from the one side were grand, a real oasis. Then onto the real find. In a spiritual park there is a bridge, that seems out of this world, must be seen to be believed, with the shelves made from old veranda holders.

Quick stop at hotel Janat and on to the polytechnic university but we were denied access, so we had some fun, 'not' showing it. Our last stop was the irrigation channels, made to last in the 1940s and 50s. It was a long and exhausting day, but, no worries, it was great.

Phoenix Mauritius, the Mall, bridges, Jurassic world and the old station

Phoenix on a glorious sunny day is a beautiful place to visit. With its huge malls with everything you need to the quiet back streets filled with surprises, it will entice you in. The old bridges set in tranquil parks, the huge and secretive houses, a famous brewery, the train station, and a sad cannon all add to the magic.

We started at Phoenix Mall, packed with shops, food, hairdressers, and a giant Jumbo. Our first destination in the mall was the food. We got a steaming hot bowl of boullette with a variety of goodies. For pudding, we had our first Portuguese egg tart and cronut. I had no idea someone had decided to mix a donut and a croissant together to make a delicious thing called a cronut. The lashings of chocolate made it the sweet treat we needed to traverse the kilometers of the mall.

It was great to see so many people shopping, there was a real bustle in the mall. As we walked the entire length we noticed the subtle change in design, a cunning plan by the architect to make it feel like a new area as you go. We made it to the end having passed every shop you can name including a mega Jumbo store. Then it was the long walk back to the car, past the Macdonald's and an external KFC drive-through.

Out on the road, we stumbled onto the Palmerston bridge, built in 1866. We had planned to visit this bridge but had no idea where it was. The bridge has great stonework, but the Jurassic World it is situated in was a thing to behold. I could almost see the dinosaurs scuttling around in this quiet corner of the city. After this lucky find, we abandoned our plans and drove around waiting for the next surprise.

It didn't take long and we were stopped in a suburb with beautiful houses and a dance academy. They shared a wall with a secret bank that has to have the best driveway in the country. We couldn't see much of the mansion, but driving around it for a better view brought us to another great old bridge. The steel girders that once supported the walkway or narrow-gauge rail were truly huge. It contrasted dramatically with the razorwire fence of the secret bank.

Crossing another road we came to the most famous of Phoenix's residences, what probably gave the town its name, Phoenix brewery. We couldn't get in, but the park behind had a great view of the steel tanks, and just being close to that much beer warmed my heart, oh and there were more bridges.

Then onto the sad part of the day, the old Phoenix railway station. For years it was the home of MUGs, the Mauritius Underwater Group, the oldest scuba diving club in Mauritius. The building was beautiful, and in my normal fashion I kept a stiff up lip, but the sad future of the magnificent building was ever-present in Riki. The pride of the club, its cannon, and anchor were buried out back in a shallow grave.

We closed out the great day on a sad note, but Phoenix can never really leave you in the dumps, it is simple to full of life.

I can't believe this is actually Cottage. What a place, the divide between old and new is fantastic. Cottage Tyre Center turned out to be epic with a rally Sabaru and an awesome Ford Mustang. Riche Fond / Saint Julien Mauritius Vlog

We adventure around Riche Fond and Saint Julien in the Flacq district. Starting with a fantastic fruit cup, probably the best I have had. We then walked through the spiritual park. One end has a wall where the old railway went and the other has a great round bridge. We explored a gold Hindu temple and then drove to a blue lake, where I met a wasp nest collector. He told me a bit about the history of the region, and Mauritius.

We stopped at St. Julien church, which has a relic from pope Jean-Paul and we even found a national monument in the graveyard. In the hunt for food we came across a great snack shop, but that is for another video.

La Laura Mauritius is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered

The garden village in the garden district, nature at it's best. But there is more, ancient bridges, golden temples, the best village sign ever and the beautiful mountains.

La Laura surprised us both. We were expecting some nice mountain views and a few vegetable fields, boy were we surprised. The village sign is a huge steel wheel, with 'La Laura 1923' in bright white writing. It offers the perfect view of the mountains and the old sugar mill chimney. Peter Both has never looked so good.

The main town is compact, but it seemed to me to be designed around outdoor life, with benches, gardens, and viewpoints. The river has been dammed up and there are some water lilies growing on the pond. There are two shops and a gym near the village hall.

The viewpoint is an easy drive, with views of a very distant Coin De Mire, and the Long Mountain valley. Peter Both looms where ever you go in this area. We walked down the path and picked for guavas, while I told the true and fabled story of Peter Both mountain, one had fairies and a milkman, the other had shipwrecks and scuba diving.

La Laura is a developing place with some huge mansions spring up, I point on out, but then we stumbled upon a golden temple hiding in the forest. Well, it just seemed that way, the temple is in well-cleaned lands. It has a gold and silver tower and four horses pulling the chariot of Krishna. It all felt a little surreal.

The Napoleon bridge was huge and beautiful, I kept calling it Nepolionic, which its grandeur requires. We finished off the great day, where we started, at the village sign. Hundreds of selfies later we took our weary bodies home.

Ile D'Ambre - Mauritius Island

A full hike clip at Ile D'Ambre. Ile D'Ambre is the third national park in Mauritius. It is situated near Poudre D'Or. It used to inhabit deers, goats, and even the Dodos.

Now, it has been converted into a national park with well-kept nature trails, few wetlands, a volcanic crater and few beach spots.

Camp De Masque Mauritius is a great day out that makes you happy

From the giant pineapple to the abundant street foods and welcoming locals, this is a village that makes you happy. A stroll around the huge La Unity chimney, walking the back streets, eating on the street, looking at the mountains, or exploring the dirt roads for greenhouses is all in this great day out.

The start was a huge pineapple that lead us into the town where we found easy parking. The first stop was dhal puri served by friendly Ravin. He gave us a look at his kitchen and explained that he used to work at the top hotel in Mauritius, the Oberoi. He started his business a year ago and is so glad he did, as it is going from strength to strength. We were also glad, as his dhal puri was great.

We then strolled down the road and got some samosas and a chili bite. The non-tourist villages know how to add a hot chili. More views of the street life lead us to a motorbike selling pudding pudding coconut powder Riki giggled like a schoolgirl as we tucked into our sago, tapioca, maize jellies.

Off down a side street where the houses have tiled walls. We got invited into a tailor shop where they were making men's fashion pants. It was a fascinating look into the back street industry. Further down the street I told the story of how Camp De Masque got its name and then we were off to the tallest chimney in Mauritius after a short stop at the not very teal Teal river.

La Unity is so impressive, words do not do her justice. I have yet to see such craftsmanship in stonework. There was an odd building that had steps leading up to windows, at the time I thought it was very bizarre, but on reviewing the footage I did notice the old door hinges.

Our final stop was a greenhouse farm. It was huge and I now know why tomatoes are so cheap here. We drove down a very bad dirt road and ended up in the wrong place, I'm guessing. I have never seen so much industrial agriculture in Mauritius. I explained why the bananas and pineapples from the region are the best, and showed a very sweet pineapple.

I closed out the trip with a short musical number as it's a new song were are trying out and I would appreciate any feedback.
