Fife Coastal Route / Top 7 Attractions / Visit Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 #fife #scotlandroadtrip

With a total distance of 77 miles (124km), the Fife Coastal Route runs as you’d expect almost entirely along the coast. It takes in the historic Kingdom of Fife and rather neatly, it starts and ends on bridges crossing two of Scotland’s greatest rivers: the Firth of Forth and the Tay. The bridges over the Forth rank among some of the finest in the UK.

Charming cobbled streets tumble down to the miniature harbour, which is sheltered by cliffs and surrounded by historic fishing cottages. Crail is a historic fishing village on the East Neuk of Fife coast and is well worth a visit.
Only 90 minutes by car from Edinburgh and 10 miles south of St Andrews, the Home of Golf.

Crail is the most easterly of the line of coastal settlements along the south side of the East Neuk of Fife. Many would also say it is also the most attractive of them, though each has its own unique character. Crail is a wonderful place to visit at any time of year, though it's probably at its best on a bright day in Winter when you stand more chance of having it to yourself.

Anstruther is a charming fishing village in the East Neuk of Fife, popular with day-trippers and holidaymakers.

Located south of St Andrews, Anstruther is the largest in a string of pretty, old-fashioned fishing villages along the stretch of Fife coast known as the East Neuk.

Perhaps the top attraction is simply tucking into a quality fish supper from the Anstruther Fish Bar, which in recent years has won a number of awards including UK Fish and Chip Shop of the year. Enjoy the locally caught fish by the harbour as fishing boats land their catch.

In the 1790s, salt was Scotland’s third-largest export, after wool and fish. The ruins at St Monans saltworks, adjacent to the Fife Coastal Path, is a reminder of this industry that was once very important to the Scottish economy.  The windmill at St Monans—the last remaining windmill in Fife—was used to pump sea water into the salt pans, which were then heated by local coal.

Elie is a popular seaside town in the East Neuk of Fife.

A picturesque seaside resort, Elie is gathered around a curve of golden sand. The harbour, established in the 16th century, is a popular with yachts and small pleasure craft while the surrounding bay is popular with windsurfers and bathers.

The town is also home to two fantastic golf courses. James Braid, celebrated golf course designer and five times winner of the British Open Golf Championship in the early 20th century was born in Elie.

Aberdour Silver Sands is one of the most popular and attractive beaches on the Fife coast.

Silver Sands offers the freshness and variety of the seaside as well as the peace and tranquillity of the countryside. The shore, in its charming setting, looks out to the islands of Inchmickery and Inchcolm, where there is a famous abbey.

Aberdour Silver Sands is a great place for a family day out, with a kids’ putting green and a bouncy castle in the summer.

Historic Culross is one of Scotland's most picturesque towns.

It is believed that Culross was founded by St Serf, and is located in the south west of Fife, overlooking the Firth of Forth.

Wandering around this charming town is about as close to stepping back in time to the 16th century as possible. The whitewashed, red-tiled buildings are well preserved, such as the Town House, where witches were tried and held while awaiting execution.

Join us on our 2024 Scottish Road Trip (not *that* one) as we travel in our Roller Team Auto-Roller 707 motorhome with our 2 rescue chihuahuas and seek out new places and amazing beaches.

Part 1 sees us head north on the M6 and stay at Tebay Services. Overnight parking for a motorhome costs £22 but this includes a £6 voucher to spend in the services (which almost, but not quite!, covers 2 coffees). Showers are available and the one I had was pretty decent. Toilets are available all night.

Next morning is another long trip as we head into Scotland, and over the Forth Road Bridge towards our first venue, Monifieth.

We stay at Tayview Caravan Park (see our video here: and enjoy some sea air.

Next morning we move on a short distance and check out the seaside town of Arbroath. We park up in an excellent spot (where overnight stays are allowed for motorhomes and campervans, free of charge) and take a walk along the seafront, going into the interesting Signal Tower Museum, which is dog friendly.

Next stop is Lunan Bay where unfortunately the tide is in but we will enjoy a breezy walk to see the ruins of the Red Castle.

Final stop is Montrose, where we overnight at South Links Holiday Park (video here: We take a bracing walk along the seafront to see some of the massive boats and also see the grave of WW2 hero dog Bamse.

Exploring Dundee: Discover the Birthplace of Jute, Jam, and Journalism

My ETSY:

Hello and welcome to my channel where we explore chunks of Scottish history every week.

Welcome to Dundee, 4th largest city in Scotland. It is not the only a city of 3 J - Jute, Jam and Journalism, but also a beautiful place full of interesting history.
Dundee grew up as a small port in the 11th century. Its name may be derived from the words Dun Daigh (Dun meant fort). Medieval Dundee was, of course, a busy port. Large quantities of wine were imported from France and Spain. The main exports were hides and wool. However, disaster struck Dundee in 1548 when it was partly burned by the English. Dundee soon recovered. In 1592 a wall was built around Dundee to protect it from attack.

As a walk around Dundee city centre, you can enjoy the lovely atmosphere, and a vast amount of street art or you can simply visit Macmanus art gallery and museum. Gothic revival style building. Entrance is Free and donations are appreciated.
HMS Unicorn is a surviving sailing frigate from 1824, built shortly after the Napoleonic wars, and sailed only once. This frigate is now a well-preserved Museum, add it to your list, it is beautiful.

My Trips are usually 1-day trips that you can enjoy with me. But Dundee has so much to offer. I spent there just a short 6 hours wandering around. And if you want to catch everything possible, rent a bike. It's Affordable and they are almost everywhere here.

Take a strategic trip to the ‘strong point on the Tay’, where Broughty Castle was built to help defend the nation against a gathering English navy. Broughty Castle was erected in 1490. It was taken without a shot fired by the English in 1547, and reclaimed by the Scots two and a half years later. The castle fell back into English hands in 1651. In 1860 the threat of French invasion prompted Broughty’s conversion from a ruin to a modern artillery defence. The castle was further altered in response to the German threat in the two world wars. Now Castle is turned into a beautiful museum. And guess what… The entrance is FREE.

V&A Galery is a place that presents the brilliance of Scottish Creativity. A beautiful place of inspiration, Discovery& learning.

Right behind the gallery, you can find RSS discovery. Beautiful steamship built for Antarctic research. The boat has been launched in 1901. She was the last traditional three-masted ship Built in Dundee. There are many credits to RSS discovery, like recording valuable data about the ocean, or the first scientific investigation into whale populations.

I hope you really enjoyed this video. and if I earn your subscription, or like today, thank you.

North Sea Cycle Route - Montrose To Monifieth

This video is of the 30 mile section of the North Sea Cycle Route (National Cycle Network Route 1) Continuing South from Montrose to Monifieth. Filmed in June 2018 there was a slight detour due to preparations for the Golf Open at Carnoustie in July.

Filmed mostly with a GO Pro and some Insta 360 One footage
You can find out more about the Insta 360 One here

The first half of this section is on minor almost traffic free roads between Montrose and Arbroath. From Arbroath onwards it follows dedicated cycle/walking trails all the way to Monifieth Seafront where this leg ends and the next one will start.

I took a few detours on the way back and will add links to the Mavic Pro Drone footage i took

Old Photographs Monifieth Angus Scotland

Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Monifieth, Scottish Gaelic; Monadh Feith, a town in Angus on the north bank of the Firth of Tay on the east coast. Monifieth remained a small village, comprising a number of turf huts until the early 19th century. In the eighteenth century, the economy of the parish was mainly dependent on agriculture. Other industries included quarrying and weaving within the home. During the 19th century, the village gradually expanded following the introduction of larger scale industries to the area, including manufacture of machinery for flax mills in 1811. James Low and Robert Fairweather had set up their foundry in the village at the start of the nineteenth century and in 1815 developed the first carding machine for flax tow in the area. With the growth of the textile industry in Dundee and Angus the business grew rapidly, and, by the late nineteenth century, James F Low & Co Ltd was producing a wide range of machines used for the processing and spinning of jute, flax and similar fibres. As well as building machinery for local use, the firm attracted orders from across the world and by the 1880s the Monifieth Foundry employed about 300 workers. Although Monifieth had no harbour, cargo was off loaded from vessels on Monifieth Sands in the relatively sheltered Firth of Tay at low tide and horse drawn vehicles would move the cargo to nearby destinations.
The Reverend James Gerard Young, born 1821, died 1899, was minister of the Parish of Monifieth from 1855 to 1899. The Gerard Trust was set up under his will for the establishment of a cottage hospital in Monifieth. The Gerard Cottage Hospital opened in October 1905 and was operated by a Trust until July 1948, when it was transferred to the Eastern Regional Hospital Board. By 1970 the hospital had been closed and the building altered and extended to become St Mary's Residential Home for the Elderly run by sisters of that Order and owned by the Diocese of Dunkeld. At Milton of Monifieth in the eighteenth century, a separate hamlet from what was then known as the Kirkton of Monifieth, there was linseed oil extraction mill. 1794 records show it as producing 800 bolls of oil, which apart from a few pints sold locally, were exported to London, Wngland. Another product from this operation was cattle feed, exported to Yorkshire farmers. There was also a fulling mill, thread mill, several tanneries all in business at Milton prior to 1845. Monifieth has two golf clubs and is close to Barry links, which is where Sir Robert Maule, the first links golfer, is reported to have played golf in 1527. William Fisher Cassie, usually referred to simply as Fisher Cassie in his field and as Bill Cassie by his friends, was born on 29 June 1905 in Monifieth. He was a British civil engineer and academic. He was a noteworthy author on building structure. He was an expert on soil mechanics and a strong advocate of underground transport systems. He died on 20 April 1985. Monifieth railway station serves the town of Monifieth near Dundee, Scotland. The station was opened on 6 October 1838 on the Dundee and Arbroath Railway. A tramway service was introduced in 1905, with cars journeying into Dundee City centre at regular intervals. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

Mains Castle also known as Fintry Castle 4K

The castle is believed to have been built in 1562 by Sir David Graham, nephew of Cardinal Beaton. A keystone in the western gateway bears this date as well as the initials DG and DMO for David Graham and Dame Margaret Ogilvy.
A horizontal beam in one of the eastern courtyard doors bears a date of 1582, indicating a possible completion date. The castle was the seat of the Grahams of Fintry and remained so until the 19th century when Robert Graham of Fintry sold the lands to David Erskine, with the condition that his family could retain the territorial title of Graham of Fintry and that the estate revert to the older name of Lumlathen or Linlathen. The estate was later sold by Shipley Gordon Stuart Erskine to James Key Caird, who gifted the castle and its lands to the town council as a
site for a public park in 1913.
The park was later opened in 1923 by Caird's half sister Mrs. Marryat.
The castle was renovated in the 1980s through a government scheme for the unemployed, as many of the buildings had become roofless.
An earlier castle was held by the Douglas' Earls of Angus from the 14th century until 1530 when it passed to the Grahams.
