Cascate dell'Oxena - Oxena Waterfalls - Militello Val di Catania

#Andy1803 #oxena #militello

Oxena waterfalls are located south of Militello Val di Catania, a very nice town in Catania district.
The waterfalls are part of Oxena river, a major tributary of Trigona river which mostly flows into Lentini lake.
The valley, limited by north-eastern Iblei mountains, is a less known natural paradise in sicilian countryside.
Green canyons, flower colored plateaus, narrow gorges carved by the water in ancient lava rocks, wonderful landscapes and stunning galleries formed by vegetation are the hidden treasures of Oxena valley. If you want to discover the unknown wonders of Sicily you should not miss it.

The best period for a visit is summer or late in spring when is hot enough to walk into fresh water, to go up the river easy and, why not, to take a bath in one of its enchanting pools.

To reach the site, drive until Militello, then take the road SP 28/11 towards Caltagirone but leave it after two kilometers through the SP 47 directed to Francofonte. You need to drive 6/7 kilometers more to reach an house for disable people. There is a gravel road. Few hundreds of meters, on the right side, and you'll find a panel near a gate. The trail starts from here, following downhill to the waterfalls.

When your trekking is over, don't forget to visit the town of Militello Val di Catania, world heritage according to the UNESCO, with its beautiful baroque center.

Places to see in ( Catania - Italy ) Giardino Bellini

The Giardino Bellini is the oldest urban park of Catania. It occupies 70.942 m². Before the construction of a public garden, the area was occupied by a botanical maze owned by the Ignazio Paternò Castello, prince of Biscari.

In 1854, the Comune di Catania bought the area of the maze, and in 1864 started to adapt the area into a public garden. The Giardino Bellini was finally inaugurated in 1883.

Starting from 1875, the municipality acquired several further areas surrounding the maze, and two years later the work to unify these areas was undertaken.

Places to see in ( Catania - Italy )

Places to see in ( Catania - Italy )

Catania is an ancient port city on Sicily's east coast. It sits at the foot of Mt. Etna, an active volcano with trails leading up to the summit. The city's wide central square, Piazza del Duomo, features the whimsical Fontana dell'Elefante statue and richly decorated Catania Cathedral. In the southwest corner of the square, La Pescheria weekday fish market is a rowdy spectacle surrounded by seafood restaurants.

For all the noise, chaos and scruffiness that hit the visitor at first glance, Catania has a strong magnetic pull. This is Sicily at its most youthful, a city packed with cool and gritty bars, abundant energy and an earthy spirit in sharp contrast to Palermo’s aristocratic airs. Catania’s historic core is a Unesco-listed wonder, where black-and-white palazzi tower over sweeping baroque piazzas. One minute you’re scanning the skyline from a dizzying dome, the next contemporary art in an 18th-century convent. Beneath it all are the ancient ruins of a town with over 2700 candles on its birthday cake. Indeed, food is another local forte. This is the home of Sicily's iconic pasta alla Norma and the extraordinary La Pescheria market.

Catania is well known for its historical earthquakes, having been destroyed by catastrophic earthquakes in 1169 and 1693, and for several volcanic eruptions from the neighbouring Mount Etna, the most violent of which was in 1669. Catania has had a long and eventful history, having been founded in the 8th century BC. In 1434, the first university in Sicily was founded in the city. In the 14th century and into the Renaissance period, Catania was one of Italy's most important cultural, artistic and political centres. The city has a rich culture and history, hosting many museums, restaurants, churches, parks and theatres. Catania is well known for its street food.

Catania is located on the east coast of the island of Sicily, at the foot of Mount Etna. As observed by Strabo, the location of Catania at the foot of Mount Etna has been both a curse and a blessing. On the one hand, violent outbursts of the volcano throughout history have destroyed large parts of the city, whilst on the other hand the volcanic ashes yield fertile soil, especially suited for the growth of vines.

Ancient edifices include:

Greek-Roman Theatre of Catania (2nd century)
Odeon (3rd century). It could house up to 1500 spectators
Amphitheatre
Greek Acropolis of Montevergine
Roman Aqueduct
Roman Forum
Roman broken arcades
Christian basilicas, hypogea, burial monuments and Catacombs
Roman Colonnade

Roman thermal structures :

Achillean Baths
Terme dell’Indirizzo
Terme di Santa Maria Odigitria
Terme della Rotonda
Baths of the Four Quoins
Terme di Palazzo Asmundo
Terme del Palazzo dell’Università
Terme di Casa Gagliano
Terme della Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate

Other monuments :

Castello Ursino, built by emperor Frederick II in the 13th century.
Palazzo degli Elefanti, designed by Giovan Battista Vaccarini. It houses the Town Hall.
Palazzo Biscari
Palazzo Tezzano
Uzeda Gate
The Medieval Gothic-Catalan Arch of Saint John of Friars (San Giovanni de' Fleres)
Ferdinandean Gate or Garibaldi Gate (Porta Ferdinandea or Porta Garibaldi), a triumphal arch erected in 1768 to celebrate the marriage of Ferdinand I of Two Sicilies and Marie Caroline of Austria
Porta del Fortino (Redoubt Gate)
The House of the Mutilated of War (Casa del Mutilato) built in Fascist-style architecture
Catania War Cemetery, a Commonwealth Graveyard located in the southern country hamlet of Bicocca
Giardino Bellini
Catania Botanical Garden
Pacini Garden
Gioeni Park

The Baroque city centre of Catania is a UNESCO World Heritage Site:

The Cathedral (1070–1093, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake)
Saint Agatha Abbey (1620)
Saint Placidus (1769)
Church of San Giuseppe al Duomo
Church of Santissimo Sacramento al Duomo
Church of San Martino dei Bianchi
Church of Sant'Agata la Vetere (254)
Saint Agatha by the Furnace or Saint Blaise (1098, rebuilt in 1700)

The medieval hill town of Taormina, famed for its chic Film Fest, is a popular base for touring Etna and the baroque city at its foot, Catania. #RAGUSA IBLA

One of the most fascinating towns in #Sicily, #Ragusa has caused many a visitor’s jaw to drop as they first set eyes on it. Essentially Baroque, the #Ragusa you will see today dates almost entirely from 1693, it was in that year that Ragusa, along with its neighbours #Noto, #Modica, #Scicli, and #Catania, was razed to the ground by a terrible earthquake that hit most of the eastern side of #Sicily.

Public opinion on where to rebuild the town was divided, and so a compromise was made. The wealthier, more aristocratic citizens built a new town in a different site, now #Ragusa Superiore, while the other half of the population decided to rebuild on the original site, on a ridge at the bottom of a gorge, now known as Ragusa Ibla. The two towns remained separated until 1926 when they were merged to become the chief town of the province.

While the upper part of Ragusa has its fair share of architectural delights, it is the smaller Ragusa Ibla down below that really draws visitors. Whether you approach it from #Modica to the south or from #Ragusa Superiore, the sight of the jumble of houses, churches and civic palazzi piled on top of each other, clinging to the walls of the gorge, is really quite breathtaking. Although its built on an existing mediaeval plan, the town’s heart has a certain amount of baroque logic to it, and most of the buildings date from that period.

The town is part of the #ValdiNoto #UNESCO Heritage site and 18 of its buildings are protected by UNESCO patronage.
It would be excessive to list them all here, but a few gems to see are listed below. The best thing to do is just to walk, and admire man’s resilience in the face of natural disaster.

In Ragusa Ibla
the Basilica di San Giorgio, built in 1738 by Rosario Gagliardo. It lies at the top of some 200 steps and has an impressive neoclassical dome that was added in 1820.
#Giardino #lbleo. The Hyblean Gardens offer some fantastic views of the town.
the Chiesa di Maria delle Scale (St. Mary of the Steps) lies between Ragusa Superiore and Ragusa Ibla. It was not totally destroyed by the 1693 earthquake as can be seen from the Gothic Catalan-style arches in the right aisle. As its name might suggest, the church is reached via 242 steps, though the reward at the top is worth it. If you are a fan of the hit Italian detective series Inspector Montalbano, you may recognise the view from the Church of Maria delle Scale from the panoramic shots of Ragusa Ibla that set the scene for a great deal of the episodes. Many of the scenes from the series were filmed in and around Ragusa Ibla's beautiful #Piazza #Duomo: see our On the trail of #Inspector #Montalbano page for more details.

In Ragusa Superiore
The Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista, previously situated under the walls of the mediaeval castle, was rebuilt twice, as the first version was deemed unsuitable. The version that you will see today was built in 1718 in an archetypal, extravagant #Sicilian #baroque #style.
