Places to see in ( Chipping Norton - UK )

Chipping Norton is a market town and civil parish in the Cotswold Hills in the West Oxfordshire district of Oxfordshire, England, about 12 miles southwest of Banbury and 18 miles northwest of Oxford. The Rollright Stones, a stone circle 2.5 miles (4 km) north of Chipping Norton, is evidence of prehistoric habitation in the area.

The town's name means 'market north town', with Chipping (from Old English cēping) meaning 'market'. Chipping Norton began as a small settlement at the foot of a hill on which stand the motte-and-bailey Chipping Norton Castle. Only the earthworks of the castle remain. The Church of England parish church of St. Mary the Virgin was built on the hill next to the castle. Parts of the present building may date from the 12th century.

Chipping Norton was one of the boroughs reformed by the Municipal Corporations Act 1835. Its neoclassical town hall was built in 1842. Chipping Norton had a workhouse by the 1770s. In 1836 the architect George Wilkinson built a new, larger workhouse.

The Chipping Norton Railway opened in 1855, linking the town with Kingham on the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway. In 1887 a second railway opened, linking Chipping Norton to the Oxford and Rugby Railway at King's Sutton, and the CNR became part of the resulting Banbury and Cheltenham Direct Railway. Extending the railway from Chipping Norton involved digging a tunnel 685 yards (626 m) long under Elmsfield Farm west of town.

Until 1962 Chipping Norton railway station served the town. Now the nearest stations are at Kingham and Ascott-under-Wychwood. A group of media, political and show-business acquaintances, some of whom have homes near Chipping Norton, including former Prime Minister David Cameron, is referred to in the media as the Chipping Norton set.

The Most Beautiful ENGLISH villages in the COTSWOLDS - Part 1

Some of the most beautiful English villages can be found in the Cotswolds. This guide shows you Englands prettiest villages and historical properties from this beautiful part of England.

Our 2 part guide, starts in Castle Combe, voted the prettiest village in England a number of times. Hardly changed since the 16 hundreds, this sleepy village is also famous for being the backdrop in a number of films, including Steven Spielberg's War Horse and the 1967 classic Dr Dolittle.

Walking down by the river By Brook, the weaver's cottages are the highlight. Home to the local weavers back in the 15th century, they were highly skilled craftsmen men and women and held high status in the village.
Castle Combe

Bibury is not to be missed on any trip to the Cotswolds. Possibly the most beautiful chocolate box village in the Cotswolds and noted as such by William Morris when he visited. The Arlington Row is the highlight of the visit and again seen in movies like Stardust and Bridget Jones Diary. It can get very busy here so suggest you come early morning or late afternoon when the tour buses have passed.

Bibury

Burford has a sweeping long high street with delightful shops, antiques and tearooms. The 15th-century parish church of St. John Baptist is a magnificently preserved example and should not be missed whilst in the town.

Midsomer Norton, Somerset town short walk

Here is a splendid place in Somerset that is well worth a visit.
Could have easily gone on for 45 mins but time as usual got the better of me. You have probably driven past on the way to Bristol or Bath but next time be sure to grab a drink and have a walk around here, several nice cafe's and fish and chip shops definitely on my list for a return asap.
Thank you very much for watching.

Places to see in ( Radstock - UK )

Places to see in ( Radstock - UK )

Radstock is a town in Somerset, England, 9 miles south west of Bath, and 8 miles north west of Frome. It is within the unitary authority of Bath and North East Somerset and had a population of 5,620 according to the 2011 Census. Since 2011 Radstock has been a town council in its own right.

Radstock has been settled since the Iron Age, and its importance grew after the construction of the Fosse Way, a Roman road. The growth of the town occurred after 1763, when coal was discovered in the area. Large numbers of mines opened during the 19th century including several owned by the Waldegrave family, who had been Lords of the Manor since the English Civil War. Admiral Lord Radstock, brother of George, fourth Earl Waldegrave, took the town's name as his title when created a Baron.

The spoil heap of Writhlington colliery is now the Writhlington Site of Special Scientific Interest, which includes 3,000 tons of Upper Carboniferous spoil from which more than 1,400 insect fossil specimens have been recovered. The complex geology and narrow seams made coal extraction difficult. Tonnage increased throughout the 19th century, reaching a peak around 1901, when there were 79 separate collieries and annual production was 1,250,000 tons per annum.

However, due to local geological difficulties and manpower shortages output declined and the number of pits reduced from 30 at the beginning of the 20th century to 14 by the mid-thirties; the last two pits, Kilmersdon and Writhlington, closed in September 1973. The Great Western Railway and the Somerset and Dorset Railway both established stations and marshalling yards in the town. The last passenger train services to Radstock closed in 1966. Manufacturing industries such as printing, binding and packaging provide some local employment. In recent years, Radstock has increasingly become a commuter town for the nearby cities of Bath and Bristol.

Radstock is home to the Radstock Museum which is housed in a former market hall, and has a range of exhibits which offer an insight into north-east Somerset life since the 19th century. Many of the exhibits relate to local geology and the now disused Somerset coalfield and geology. The town is also home to Writhlington School, famous for its Orchid collection, and a range of educational, religious and cultural buildings and sporting clubs.

The main geological feature in this area of the Mendip Hills south of Hallatrow consists of Supra-Pennant Measures which includes the upper coal measures and outcrops of sandstone. The southern part of the Radstock Syncline have coals of the Lower and Middle Coal Measures been worked, mainly at the Newbury and Vobster collieries in the southeast and in the New Rock and Moorewood pits to the southwest.

Radstock was the terminus for the southern branch of the Somerset Coal Canal, which was turned into a tramway in 1815 and later incorporated into the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway. It then became a central point for railway development with large coal depots, warehouses, workshops and a gas works. As part of the development of the Wilts, Somerset and Weymouth Railway an 8-mile (13 km) line from Radstock to Frome was built to carry the coal.

( Radstock - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Radstock . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Radstock - UK

MIDSOMER MURDERS FILMING LOCATION GUIDE PART ONE (2018)

A couple of weeks ago I had to travel back from London through the Oxfordshire countryside. I took the opportunity to stop off at a couple of locations used regularly used for filming one of my favourite programmes - MIDSOMER MURDERS.

Wallingford and Warborough have both been used extensively for episodes over the years.

This is just the beginning. There are so many villages and landmarks to visit which have been used in the hit drama. I'll be working on the next part very soon.

Day 55 Bath to Midsomer Norton - 02

Leaving Bath and heading for Somerset partly along the Limestone Link toward the town of Norton Radstock

Norton Barracks Worcestershire

Norton Barracks Worcestershire - were built in the Fortress Gothic Revival Style the depot for the 29th (Worcestershire) Regiment of Foot and the 36th (Herefordshire) Regiment of Foot. Both Regiments amalgamated as the Worcestershire Regiment, with its depot in the barracks in 1881.
The Regimental Museum was established at the barracks in 1933 but have now been moved to the Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum. The property is grade 2 listed and has been converted into private apartments
Norton is a village split in two by the M5 motorway it sits less than a mile from the Worcester city boundary. After the decommissioning of the barracks the village was extensively developed and is now unrecognisable from its former self.

Visit to Midsomer Norton South on the old S&D

On the return from Bristol today I visited Midsomer Norton South Station on the S&D and took a ride behind the Jinty leaving the station on a 1 in 50 climb. You could almost take yourself back to its heyday. The Sentinel was also working and the event was very well supported. They are planning another 700m of track by 2017. Go and visit if you get the opportunity!

Welcome to EXTRA from Channel 205 UK.

EXTRA identifies a programme which isn't related to the channel's usual transportation related topics, however from listening to channel and twitter followers it seems my interests mirrors many they have too. So, welcome to EXTRA!

On tour with Railtrail Tours - A Fantastic Miniature Railway and Steam in Midsomer!

On Day 2 of the Lost Village of Imber and Steam tour, the Railtrail party had two private charters at two very different railways.

First stop was the Coate Water Miniature Railway run by the North Wilts Model Engineers.

We enjoy a trip behind American Mikado No. 1942 Screaming Eagle on the extensive railway. We then visit the sheds and do a bit of linesiding before going to Midsomer Norton.

At Midsomer Norton a section of the famous Somerset & Dorset Railway has been restored and we see vertical boiled Sentinel No. 7109 Joyce in steam!
