Places to see in ( Merthyr Tydfil - UK )
Merthyr Tydfil is a town in Wales, situated approximately 23 miles north of Cardiff. At one time the largest town in Wales, Merthyr Tydfil is today the country's fourth largest urban area by population. Situated in the historic county of Glamorgan, it is the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough and is administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. Both the town and the county borough are often referred to as simply 'Merthyr'.
According to legend, the town is named after Saint Tydfil, a daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog. According to her legend, she was slain at Merthyr by pagans around 480; the place was subsequently named Merthyr Tydfil in her honour. Merthyr was regarded as a nonconformist stronghold in the 19th century, but the chapels declined rapidly from the 1920s onwards and most are now closed.
The town has held many cultural events. Local poets and writers hold poetry evenings in the town, and music festivals are organised at Cyfarthfa Castle and Park. With this in mind, Menter Iaith Merthyr Tudful (the Merthyr Tydfil Welsh Language Initiative) has successfully transformed the Zoar Chapel and the adjacent vestry building in Pontmorlais into a community arts venue, Canolfan Soar and Theatr Soar, which run a whole programme of performance events and activities in both Welsh and English, together with a cafe and book shop, specialising in local interest and Welsh language books and CDs.
Also on Pontmorlais, Merthyr Tydfil Housing Association was successful in a number of funding bids to develop the Old Town Hall into a new cultural centre, working in partnership with Canolfan a Theatr Soar to turn the Pontmorlais area into a cultural quarter. The Old Town Hall facility was launched on Saint David's Day 2014. With references to the 1831 Merthyr Rising and the building's red bricks, the venue has been named REDHOUSE – Hen Neuadd Y Dref / Old Town Hall. Merthyr Tydfil College's Arts and Media departments occupy part of the building, holding occasional professional performances at REDHOUSE's Dowlais Theatre and providing opportunities for students to perform dance, musicals, plays, and instrumental and vocal concerts.
The town is in a South Wales Valleys environment just south of the Brecon Beacons National Park, and this, along with its rich history, means it has huge potential for tourism. National Cycle Route 8 passes through the town. The Brecon Mountain Railway is easily accessible by cycle and car. Regular trains operate from Merthyr Tydfil railway station to Cardiff Queen Street and Cardiff Central. Public transport links to Cardiff are being improved in 2017. Merthyr Tydfil bus station is located to the north of the town centre.

5 Top-Rated Day Trips from Cardiff, UK
On the southern coast of Wales, Cardiff is the perfect place from which to explore the Welsh countryside. From here, you can access the country's two most important national parks, Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons, the latter less than an hour's drive through stunning scenery (while Snowdonia takes a little longer to access, it is also a must-visit). Other great day trips from Cardiff include exploring the beautiful Pembrokeshire coastline and its many pleasant towns, including Carmarthen, the legendary birthplace of Merlin, along with Swansea, one of the busiest cultural centers in the country. Also worth checking out are the many museums dedicated to Wales' industrial past, including the massive Rhondda coal works and the Museum of the Welsh Woolen Industry in Cardigan (and yes, Wales does have a lot of sheep!). Best of all, Wales is such a small country, it's easy to double-up on your day trips, hitting more than one great attraction each time you venture out. Here five day trips from Cardiff, Wales Europe.
1. Brecon Beacons National Park
2. Snowdonia National Park
3. Pembroke Castle and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park

Poorest Towns in the UK - Merthyr Tydfil
How would it sound in your ears if you were told that your most cherished town was one the poorest? Your answer should give you an insight into the feelings of the residents and governments of cities and towns in the United Kingdom that we have identified as one of the poorest in Wales, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, or the entire country. Therefore, we understand that the Welsh residents of the town of Merthyr Tydfil may not conveniently swallow the bitter pills telling their throat that the next of the poorest towns in the UK that we want to discuss now is Merthyr Tydfil. But we are not the ones saying this; please blame the facts and figures on the ground.
Merthyr Tydfil in Brief
An overview of Merthyr Tydfil might be an ideal place to start from. Of course, we know that we once told you things about this town and you probably remember one or two. Yet, we have so far not devoted any video of this nature entirely to the analysis of its poverty state.
Merthyr Tydfil, also called Merthyr, the name we’ll use more in this video, is a town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough. It’s, in fact, the main town of the borough administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council in Wales. It’s named after Tydfil the daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog. According to legend, Tydfil was murdered by pagans because of her Christian faith. Subsequently, she came to be known as Martyr Tydfil and the name was later corrupted into what it is today.
Merthyr’s Heyday
Sincerely, the case of Merthyr is pathetic. Centuries ago, it had no reason to be grouped near the poorest towns. Before the industrial revolution, the town was self-sufficient with an economy based on farming and later trading. Shepherds in the town were living comfortably.
Things were going all up for the town in its heyday when it was an important center of coal mining, steelwork, and iron smelting. It used to be one of the vital cogs spinning the wheel of the fast-paced industrial revolution. Limestone, timber, and water were supporting the growth of engineering. Can you believe that this town was home to Cyfarthfa Ironworks, Dowlais Ironworks, Plymouth Ironworks, and Penydarren, the 4 of the greatest ironworks in the world?
At some point, the economic prosperity of Merthyr attracted people such its population rose to a peak of 80,990 in 1911. As far back as 1908, it had been granted county borough status. However, Merthyr's long and varied industrial heritage could not be sustained. Much of the long-established collieries and steel and ironworks bringing prosperity to the town declined in quick succession. We shall get to that later.
Is Merthyr Tydfil Really Poor?
Are we supposed to be the ones answering that question? Why can’t we just go through the facts together? Not long ago, a reputable research organization, B&Q conducted a poll sampling 2057 adults in the United Kingdom, including 494 of the participants from Wales. Merthyr ranked as the top unemployment blackspot in Britain. A study by Sheffield Hallam University agreed with that.
Another one, the British Household Panel Survey, says the town is one of the unhappiest places to live in the UK due to a lack of basic amenities and necessities. On a Channel 4 league table, our dear town ranked third-worst place to live in the UK. Though it dropped to the 5th position on the table the following year, a corn survey ranked it topmost among the 10 worst regions in the UK for diet, lifestyles, and poor health.
A popular paper journal, Gay Times’ also conducted a study that revealed that men in Merthyr die younger on average than anywhere else in Wales. While the study found that women in the town live longer than men in the town, the Office of National Statistics reports that women in Merthyr die almost two years before women in Cardiff and other cities.
What do all these depict? There are not enough jobs in the town; residents are unhappy because they’re poor; they lack access to medical care because they can’t afford it, and they die younger than residents of many other towns and cities in the UK.

10 Poorest Places in The UK
What are the poorest places in the UK? The last thing that’ll come to mind when the UK is mentioned is poverty. It’s not among the countries you’ll associate poverty with. This should be clearly noted as we begin. Yet, not every part of Great Britain has the affluence of London, Edinburgh, or Glasgow. Some places in the UK are poor. We’re here to show you the 10 poorest places in the UK.
These places are the same neighborhood with the biggest shortages of basic social infrastructure and facilities such as playgrounds, parks, pubs, shops, and sports centers. You’ll find some of them among the areas left behind in England, Wales, and Scotland. Authorities have to do something about these 10 poorest places in the UK.
10. Newport, Wales
We’re starting in Wales. One of the poorest places in the UK is a city and county borough in Gwent in Wales. We are referring to Newport which is situated on the River Usk close to the river’s confluence with the Severn Estuary. It is 19 kilometers northeast of Cardiff. Newport’s population of 145,700 at the 2011 census notwithstanding, all is not going on fine with the city. It can’t get past its nagging poverty.
Imagine this: of Newport’s 95 neighborhoods in Newport, 23 currently rank among the most deprived in Wales. Do the math, and you will find out that this is about 24 percent of the authority. That’s the biggest percentage of deprivation in the country.
9. Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland
Wales doesn’t have a monopoly on poor places. Scotland has, at least, one of the 10 poorest places in the UK. You’ll find the ninth on our list in Inverclyde. This is Greenock, a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area. The town with a population of 44,248 is located in the west-central Lowlands of Scotland.
As proof of how gripping the poverty state of this town is, its population reduced by almost 3,000 within 10 years. In a report that shows how poor some parts of the nations are, Greenock tops the list. In the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation for 2020, Greenock has the highest number of deprived areas in Scotland.
8. Halton, England
England too has some of the poorest places in the UK and the first of these on this list is the eighth poorest place in the UK, Halton. The district and unitary authority that registers its name on this list has a borough status in Cheshire.
When you consider its ranking as one of the worst areas in England and Wales by a global children's charity that also ranks Halton as one of the worst areas in England and Wales to be a girl, you will understand why Halton slipped into the rank of the 20 most deprived areas in England. Other indices like life expectancy, children poverty which is 25 percent, health inequality, and unemployment rates are not in a positive light for this district.
7. Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
We’re back in Wales to find Merthyr Tydfil, the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, as the seventh of the 10 poorest places in the UK. The town administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is about 37 kilometers north of Cardiff. Often called Merthyr, the town believed to be named after Tydfil, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, has a population of 43,820.
This town seems to be hitting above its weight as the go-to place for those looking for gloomy job news. As of March 2018, the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. Even though it's an iron producer, poor transportation service is the bane of this town that makes it so poor.
6. South Elmsall, England
South Elmsall is a small town and a civil parish lying to the east of Hemsworth with a population of 6,519. When it comes to safety, this town is among the most dangerous of small towns, villages, and cities in West Yorkshire. It’s faring badly in income deprivation, employment deprivation, education, skills and training deprivation, health deprivation, and disability. The 2021 overall crime rate in South Elmsall was 111 crimes per 1,000 people Living in this small town, you will be on a downward spiral of ill health and at the risk of premature death or the impairment of quality of life caused by poor physical or mental health.

Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery is a charming museum located in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. Cyfarthfa Castle, which now serves as a museum and art gallery, was built in 1824 as the residence of the Crawshay family, one of the wealthiest industrial families of the time. This family owned one of the largest ironworks in Wales, Cyfarthfa Ironworks, making Merthyr Tydfil one of the most important industrial centers in the 19th century.
The museum offers a rich collection of historical items related to the local industrial history, but also many works of art, including ceramics, furniture, paintings, and natural history exhibits. The castle itself is surrounded by a vast park, which is a popular spot for walks and recreation.
The castle was built for William Crawshay, one of the wealthiest industrialists in Merthyr Tydfil, who managed the Cyfarthfa Ironworks. This ironworks was one of the largest and most important in Europe during the 19th century, producing steel and iron for the British army and industry.
Although its appearance resembles classical medieval castles, Cyfarthfa Castle is more of a neo-Gothic mansion, built as a symbol of the Crawshay family's wealth and power. The castle's design was intended to showcase the family's splendor and success rather than provide defense against attacks, which is often misleading due to its architecture.
4m In the 19th century, Merthyr Tydfil was one of the most important industrial centers in the world, and the castle symbolized the power and influence of the family that played a crucial role in the development of the Industrial Revolution. The castle is often seen as a symbol of the wealth that the region gained through the iron industry.
Like many old residences, Cyfarthfa Castle is the subject of local ghost legends. The most famous story involves the ghosts of the Crawshay family. It is said that William Crawshay II, who died in 1867, sometimes returns to the castle to ensure that everything is going according to his will. Staff and visitors have reported mysterious sounds of footsteps, doors creaking, and objects moving unexpectedly in the castle's rooms.
A next story tells of Lady Charlotte, the wife of William Crawshay, who was unhappy in her marriage. She was reportedly discontent with the wealth and life in the castle, and her ghost is said to occasionally appear in the park surrounding the castle, as if seeking solace.
The park surrounding the castle is also a major attraction. It features an artificial lake, beautiful gardens, and expansive walking areas. It is a popular spot for relaxation among locals and tourists. Local festivals and open-air concerts are often held in the park.
In the early 1900s, after the death of the last member of the Crawshay family, the castle was transferred to the town of Merthyr Tydfil. In 1910, it was opened as a museum and art gallery, and many of the original furnishings from the residence have survived to this day.
The museum showcases many interesting artifacts:
The museum houses numerous paintings, including works by Welsh artists, as well as ceramics and porcelain.
Visitors can see tools and machinery used in the iron industry, which helped Merthyr Tydfil become an industrial hub.
The museum also has collections of minerals, taxidermy, and various items from historical times.
The Brecon Mountain Railway is a narrow-gauge railway that runs through the picturesque landscapes of South Wales, near Pontsticill Reservoir, offering unforgettable views and experiences for tourists. The history of this line dates back to the past when the coal industry was the strongest driving force in the region's economy. Today, it is a tourist attraction that allows visitors to discover the beauty of the Brecon Beacons National Park (now known as Bannau Brycheiniog).
Pontsticill Reservoir is an artificial water reservoir located in South Wales, within the Brecon Beacons National Park, now called Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. The reservoir was built in the 1920s to supply water to the Merthyr Tydfil region and Cardiff.
Pontsticill Reservoir was completed in 1927 as part of a larger project to provide drinking water to cities in South Wales, including Cardiff and Merthyr Tydfil. The construction of this reservoir was necessary due to the growing demand for water in the region.

Snowdonia National Park is located in the northwest and features lakes, glacial landscapes, hiking paths, and a railway that ascends to the summit of Snowdon. The list of things to do in Wales is quite extensive, and those touring only for a short while would surely miss out on some of the fun. One of the best things to do in Wale is to sample Welsh cuisine. It is also an excellent way to Wale. Welsh cakes are a delicious dessert that is similar to sweet scones but flatter. But there are other delights that are just too good to pass up, such as Bara Brith (similar to a fruit loaf), Cawl (lamb stew), and Welsh Rarebit (similar to cheese on toast).
Also on the list of awesome things to do includes enjoying some time at the castle parks. Not only is the castle's beauty breathtaking, but its atmosphere also transports you back in time two millennia. Sculptor Thomas Nicholls packed the park walls with a menagerie of animals that may have fit on the ark, making for a fun Easter egg hunt. While you're out and about, stop by the adjacent Friends in Kneed bakery for a snack. For daredevils, going cliff jumping would, without a doubt, be one of the best things to do in the region. However, keep in mind that this is the sort of thing that shouldn't be attempted without a guide and some sturdy gear.

12 Best Towns to Live in Wales
What are the best towns in Wales? We do not get to hear a lot about cities and towns in Wales, not as much as we do about those in England and Scotland. However, whenever the towns to live in the UK are ranked, Welsh towns find their way in. That inevitably reveals the best places to live in Wales. Sorting through the ranking, we are able to isolate the 12 best towns to live in Wales. Please bear in mind that our ranking relies to a large extent, but not entirely, on the most recent ranking of towns in Britain in the marketing report by the property finder company, Garrington’s. Factors considered are employment, green spaces, physical environment, quality of living, and architecture or heritage.
12. Narberth, Pembrokeshire
Just two years ago, Narberth was among the 8 Welsh villages and towns named the best places to live in the UK. It actually tops that ranking. Two years later, things are only getting better. A reputable online mortgage broker gives the town's average property price as 164,950 pounds. You can’t rush through your shopping in this beautiful small town. There are a lot of good and uncommon things to be bought and at reasonable prices there. On the high streets of this town are antique shops, vintage and craft outlets, award-winning cafes, delicatessens featuring local produce, restaurants and pubs among others. It also has a museum and romantic castle ruins. It has very good schools and great transport links.
11. Usk, Monmouthshire
Usk, a town and community in Monmouthshire, stands out in Wales. This town located 16 kilometers northeast of Newport is on the River Usk and is spanned by an arched stone bridge toward the western entrance to the town. This is a town with well-designed homes and bursting with community spirit.
We perfectly agree with the Sunday Times’ expert judges ranking Usk among the loveliest towns to live in Wales. Truly, on a more important note, a look at the air quality, school standards, broadband speed, and transport in this town will necessitate its inclusion here. It also ranks so well for green spaces, community culture, and the health of the attractive high street.
10. Glanaman, Carmarthenshire
Glanaman is another town with an overall high rank among the best towns to live in Wales. Out of 1372 places ranked in the United Kingdom, it ranks 71st. In the same ranking, we find it in the second position for natural beauty. For the quality of life rank, it holds the 200th position while its architectural beauty places it in the 796th position. As for green rank, it finds a place in number 555.
This town has a strong historical link to the ancient coal mining industry. Sited in the valley of the River Amman, Glanaman’s average family home cost is less than 350,000 pounds.
9. Blaenavon, Torfaen
Blaenavon, a town in Torfaen, is another Welsh town steeped in history. It was at one point the world giant among the important producers of iron, coal, and steel.
On the quality of life, it was the 69th best place to live in the UK while for natural beauty, it’s in the enviable third position. It’s also in the impressive 7th position for architectural beauty. The average family home costs less than 350,000 pounds. It would have ranked higher on this list but for its poor ranking for green space.
8. Brecon, Powys
Brecon in Powys, another market town, is also among the loveliest towns to live in Wales. The town is reputable for its annual scintillating jazz festival and its gorgeous cathedral is situated just within the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Morlais Castle ruins Merthyr Tydfil In search of the crypt Is it spooky?
Morlais Castle ruins, Merthyr Tydfil. In search of the crypt. Is it spooky? Join us on our hunt for the crypt, the only surviving room in this ruined castle. The ruins were amazing, but where did that archway lead?
The crypt is open to anyone daft enough to climb up to the top of the mountain and search for it among the ruins. We were that daft!!!
it was scary but wonderful. See it from our point of view. No frills images showing what it is really like at Morlais castle. We still don't know what the mystery hole was!!!
