Millions of years ago, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the earth gave birth to a very rare blue-mauve stone: the precious Tanzanite.

At this unique site, this gem is extracted in extremely precarious and primitive conditions.

This film will take you on an adventure into the bowels of the earth with the miners who go down these endless tunnels. These serpentine labyrinths wind their way in graphite over several kilometres. Some miners stay their 18 hours at a stretch, enduring temperatures of nearly 50°C.

The gems found are collected by the proprietor of the mine and it is the Massais who go there to buy them. They have the monopoly of the tanzanite trade between the mines and the counters of Arusha where they re-sell them.

After cutting and improving some of these stones, a handful of foreigners who have settled in this town sell and export them to major commercial destinations like the United States, Europe, India and other Asian countries. In this film you will follow every stage of their journey.

Today, the exploitation of tanzanite accounts for the wealth of Arusha; Massais have even constructed buildings with their profits. Some of them, in high spirits, throw wads of notes from the top of their buildings to celebrate their success.

Soon after its discovery in 1968, the New York jeweler Tiffany began commercializing this gem world-wide, till it ranked as the second most sold blue stone in the United States after the sapphire.

You will discover Tiffany’s creations made with this fascinating stone - the tanzanite.

Traveling into the Tanzanite Mines of Tanzania, Africa

Steve Moriarty travels to Tanzania to go direct to the source of Tanzanite. During this trip he brought along local photographer, Matt Bigelow, to document their trip. This video shows their journey to a Tanzanite mine that they went to and explored. They traveled through Tanzania to Merelani, where Steve's friend owns and operates a Tanzanite mine. Here they met, talked to, and had lunch with the local miners before going into the actual mine itself. Steve's main goal of this trip was to bring back tanzanite, but he also met with the miners and gem dealers in the area to purchase some other natural gemstones that were mined close by. These gems included, Merelani mint garnet, umbalite garnet, zircon, and moonstone. To see images from our blog on this trip visit:

Also available to see in person at Moriarty's Gem Art Store at 126 South Main Street, Crown Point, Indiana. We're located in the hub of Northwest Indiana on the downtown Square.

TANZANITE - the MOST BEAUTIFUL BLUE STONE......in 2000 years | Savana Safari | The Great Migration

TANZANITE - the most beautiful blue stone... in 2000 years

Way back in 1960s an Indian by the name of Manuel d’Souza lived in the city of Arusha, Tanzania in East Africa. A prospector by profession, for a long time D’Souza was trying to locate ‘sapphire’ deposits in North-East Tanzania. Luck favoured him and in 1967 instead of sapphire he discovered a beautiful blue stone hitherto unknown to the civilized world. Soon, he started mining it commercially in Merelani Hills close to Mt Kilimanjaro and Tiffany & Co. London started marketing it internationally christening it Tanzanite after its country of origin.

Known as `the most beautiful blue stone to be discovered in 2000 years’ Tanzanite is actually the blue and violet variety of the mineral zoisite. It however stands out for its remarkable ability to show alternately blue, violet and burgundy colour and appear differently coloured under different lighting conditions. Surprisingly in its rough state tanzanite is reddish brown to clear and assumes the blue violet colour only on heat treatment. This coincides with the legend that the Maasai herders had first discovered Tanzanite when they visited a patch of land that had recently been struck and burnt by lightning. They found hundreds of blue stones strewn across the ground and subsequently shared it and its location with D’souza.

Within a very short time Tanzanite became the most popular and coveted gemstone internationally after the “big four,” i.e. diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald. Tanzanite has today become the second most popular blue gem after sapphire due to its colour range of strong-to-vivid blue, purplish blue and violet-blue. A richly coloured AAA rated 1 carat Tanzanite costs between US $ 300-400 and the price increases as the carat increases. Its high demand coupled with availability in a small area of 4sq miles, according to some, makes it a very good investment.

Tanzanite has the property of healing and balancing our energy by stimulating our Crown Chakra, Third Eye and Throat Chakra. The American Gem Trade Association considers it a stone for December born while rest of the world recommend it for September born.

Friend, while you plan to take your fiancé on honeymoon to some exotic place such that she can hum romantic songs in moonlit night, you must first gift her a Tanzanite. Its mesmerizing blue aura would cast its spell, make her voice sweet, enable her to fathom your deep love and thereby cement your relationship for ever.

What is Tanzanite?

anzanite is a trade name that was first used by Tiffany and Company for gem-quality specimens of the mineral zoisite with a blue color. Tiffany could have sold the material under the mineralogical name of blue zoisite, but they thought the name tanzanite would stimulate customer interest and be easier to market.

The name tanzanite was given because the world's only known tanzanite deposit of commercial importance is in northern Tanzania. The name reflects the gem’s limited geographic origin. The mines are all located in an area of about eight square miles in the Merelani Hills, near the base of Mount Kilimanjaro and the city of Arusha.

Although nearly all of the world’s most popular gemstones have been known and used for hundreds of years, tanzanite was not discovered in commercial quantities until the 1960s. In the short time since then, it has become the second most popular blue gem after sapphire. It is one of a very small number of gems of any color that have been discovered and brought to strong consumer popularity within the past century. This rapid rise to popularity was accomplished mainly by Tiffany’s promotion and tanzanite’s beautiful blue color. Because of its growing popularity, Tanzanite was designated as a modern birthstone for the month of December in 2002.

Gold mining community in Tanzania

This is a quick glimpse of what I experienced in Geita, Tanzania, in September 2009. I'm doing supervisory training at the gold mine at Geita - it is such an institution in Tanzania it is depicted on the new 5000 Tanzania shilling bill. A South African and a Namibian took mercy on me on a Saturday and decided to show me the sights. We also saw the awful ringbarking of trees - totally unaware local population who use the bark to make beehives - in the process they kill the trees that attract the bees. Also saw independent miners - manually chopping away at the gold bearing orr on the other side of the hill, then loading a bag full of this stuff onto the back of a bicycle and WHEELING it into Geita town some 20Kms away, where there's a small independent smelter. These are people who live on the fringes: they work harder than most, every day, and remain in abject poverty due to igorance, corruption, disease. AIDS is rife in the area, I'm told, although the gold mining company I'm contracted to does a lot to educate and otherwise equip people about malaria and HIV/AIDS.
