Lake Mead National Recreation Area is a man-made reservoir located at the Colorado River and is approximately 24 miles from the Las Vegas strip located in Las Vegas, Nevada and Arizona.
Swim, boat, hike, cycle, camp and fish at America’s first and largest national recreation area. With striking landscapes and brilliant blue waters, this year-round playground spreads across 1.5 million acres of mountains, canyons, valleys and two vast lakes. See the Hoover Dam from the waters of Lake Mead or Lake Mohave, or find solitude in one of the park's nine wilderness areas.
The lake has remained below full capacity since 1983 due to drought and increased water demand. As of April 2020, Lake Mead held 42.97% of full capacity with 11.3 million acre feet, up from 10.4 million acre feet in 2019 and the low of 9.8 million acre feet 2016. It has been smaller than Lake Powell (the second-largest US reservoir when both are full) since 2013.

Nevada (Spanish for blanketed; see elocutions) is a state in the Western, Mountain West, and Southwestern districts of the United States of America. Nevada is the seventh most broad, the 34th most crowded, and the ninth slightest thickly populated of the 50 United States. Almost seventy five percent of Nevada's kin live in Clark County, which contains the Las Vegas–Paradise metropolitan area[6] where three of the state's four biggest fused urban communities are located.[7] Nevada's capital is Carson City. Nevada is authoritatively known as the Silver State as a result of the significance of silver to its history and economy. It is otherwise called the Fight Born State, since it accomplished statehood amid the Civil War (the words Fight Born likewise show up on the state hail); as the Wise brush State, for the local plant of a similar name; and as the Wise hen State.[8] Nevada fringes Oregon toward the northwest, Idaho toward the upper east, California toward the west, Arizona toward the southeast and Utah toward the east. VALLEY OF FIRE: A STUNNING trip to Nevada's oldest STATE PARK and LAKE MEAD
Valley of Fire is Nevada’s oldest State Park. Join a road trip from Lake Mead to Utah and explore the most scenic places on the way.
Wind, Water, Earth and Fire. Shaped by the elements and 150 Million Years, Valley of Fire State Park is a fantastic destination to visit in the middle of Nevadas desert.
Before we were about to hit the road and the burning heat of Nevada again, we used the calm and much more cool morning to explore Boulder City. With around 16.500 inhabitants Boulder is nothing like Las Vegas, that lies literally next door. Boulder has a super laid back and outdoorsy atmosphere.
Our first destination on the way to Valley of Fire State Park was Lake Mead:
It is Americas first and largest National Recreation Area. Lake Mead is America's largest reservoir, and was created by the construction of the Hoover Dam. It stores enough water to be able to cover all of Pennsylvania in a foot of water. It has more than 1200 kilometers of shoreline and is 190 kilometers long. And we were about to ride 100 kilometers close to it’s shore.
But Lake Mead is not only famous for its reservoir . 1.5 million acres of mountains, canyons, valleys are waiting to be explored.
And then we arrived at our highlight for this ride: The Valley of Fire State Park:
In the middle of the Nevada desert is a string of red rock, stretched out in a valley. These exceptional, twisted rock formations are a geological playground, sculptures shaped by time and built by the forces of water, chemistry and wind.
About 150 million years ago great sand dunes grew where now the rocks of fire valley are. Through time and compaction these dunes became sandstone. The groundwater flowed through and molded the unusual shapes and patterns. And it carried various minerals that painted the stones in its exceptional colors: red, white, yellow, purple
Enjoy the ride - and if you are in the area, Valley of Fire State Park is definitly worth a visit!
