McComb | The Town the Railroad Built Celebrates Its Past
Produced by Jim Albritton | Hundreds celebrated National Train Day in McComb, Mississippi at the city's award-winning railroad museum. They toured passenger, sleeper and dining cars on Amtrak's City of New Orleans train and the historic postal and office railcars just added to the Steam Engine 2542 display next to the city's depot. CN (Canadian National Railway) provided rides aboard Little Obie, their safety train for kids, and under the bridge hobos answered questions about life on the rails while live music and the smell of food filled the air all along Railroad Boulevard.
McComb, Mississippi was founded in 1872 after Col. Henry S. McComb of the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad, a predecessor of the Illinois Central Railroad (now part of the Canadian National Railway), decided to move the railroad's maintenance shops away from New Orleans and the negative influence of the city's saloons.

Lynyrd Skynyrd Monument - Magnolia, MS
Erin and I went to the Amite Oyster Festival in Amite LA this past weekend. Just a short drive North across the Mississippi state line, in Magnolia, MS, is the Lynyrd Skynyrd Monument. This group has had such a big influence on music I listen to growing up and even now. This plane crash, due to running out of fuel, is such a loss as they were at the top of their game. The flight was actually to Baton Rouge, LA for a concert. The entire band was not on the flight but arguably Ronnie Van Zant, the lead singer and founder, unfortunately was and lost his life in the crash along with 5 others either in the band or supporting members. It's worth going to see if you get a chance!
