Turning Dakar into a Park
Today we are taking a stroll in Dakar and noticing some people creating a park. Turning another dumping ground and parking lot into a place for children, for learning, for praying and for reading.
Step by step the people of Senegal are turning the city into a green place - full of life, and hope. It is a good practice, especially if we all do our best to make this kind of work a cool thing to do - and the young people will be attracted to building the Dakar they want to live in themselves.
This park here is being constructed by FabriMetal and the Oceanium Association.

Senegal Travel Diary #1 - Live In Ouakam, Dakar
Ouakam (wah-com) is an awesomely interesting neighborhood in Dakar, Senegal. There are a bunch of sights within a short distance but the area is very local with not a lot of tourists or expats.
These Africa travel diaries are a way for us to show you what it's really like here. Unedited, unfiltered and sharing the interesting in-between bits when we come across them.
Today you'll see a guy carrying a very loud goat, the crazy street I have to walk down, Senegalese construction methods, fancy painted local minivans (car rapides), horse carts, traffic to-do's, a pouring of Touba coffee and more.
It's a bit dusty and I desperately need a shower, but travel in Africa is sometimes like that. It's not always polished and shiny, but it is interesting and there's tons to discover. That's what makes it fun.
In future Live broadcasts, we hope to come to you from some of the cool sights, when we can. Senegal's Infamous but Beautiful Ile de Goree - Last Stop Africa | Walking Tour
G'day all. Today's video is a sobering tour of Senegal's Ile de Goree, an island not far away from the Senegalese capital of Dakar. From here millions of people were sent to the New World as slaves, and sadly millions died before even making the trip thanks to the hideous conditions they were forced to endure imprisoned before being sent.
I take a ferry from Dakar to get to the island, as does everyone who visits, and find my guide Mohammed who shows me around the island. We visit the House of Slaves and learn about the island's history. But also we learn about how the island now is home to many including artists and more, and in 2023 there is a real positive sense of community which has shown how the locals have turned a sad past into a positive future.

Le marche Kermel, classé monument historique, est une très belle halle ronde édifiée en 1860 en fer forgé et en briques, en plein cœur du quartier historique du Plateau. Détruite par un incendie en 1993, elle fut reconstruite à l’identique en trois ans. La pendule située à l’entrée du bâtiment sonnait jadis à midi pour indiquer la fermeture du marché.
A Kermel, on y trouve tous les produits alimentaires à prix « européens », c’est-à-dire chers puisque le marché est fréquenté par des “toubabs” à la recherche des meilleurs produits de Dakar et des régions du Sénégal.
