Visiting Uxmal: Best Mayan Ruins From Merida Mexico

Uxmal is an ancient Mayan ruin site located deep in the Yucatan dry jungle. Most structures at Uxaml were built around 700-1000 ad. You can actually climb many of Uxmal's buildings as you learn the importance that rain water played to this ancient city and even see well preserved masks of the Mayan rain god, Chaac. It for all of these reasons that we think Uxmal is the best Mayan ruins to visit from Merida. And there are many! You can see all of our suggestions for the best day trips from Merida in our detailed travel guide here:

Ria Celestún Biosphere Reserve, Mexico 2021

Located over the mouth of Yucatan’s biggest groundwater basin, between the towns of Celestún and Maxcanu, the Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve is part of a vast wetland corridor in the west of the peninsula. The fresh water from underground aquifers has an outlet in the site, which makes the Biosphere Reserve a unique example of a natural wetland in the area. Its mangroves, dunes and low rainforests are home to a substantial natural heritage, particularly in terms of birds. In fact, the area is a resting place for a huge number of migrating species.

Although the area is particularly known for its pink flamingos, the pristine beaches of the area, with waters ranging from turquoise to light blue, attract thousands of visitors every year.

Macuiltépec Ecological Park (Xalapa, Mexico)

Macuiltepec Park (Xalapa) is in Mexico's only Cloud Forest Region. It has awesome vegetation, animals, hiking and history. And it is one of the best things to do in Xalapa.

Campeche's Cuisine (Mexico)

Visiting the UXMAL Mayan Ruins from Mérida, Mexico by BUS! (+ Choco-story)

The Yucatan Peninsula is the heart of the ancient Mayan civilization and Merida is close to many different Mayan ruins, so before we left, we had to go see one for ourselves! We chose to visit Uxmal, which is about an hour southeast of Mérida and to make things extra fun…we took a public bus. Thankfully the day went very smoothly and we had a ton of fun seeing the ruins, which are very impressive, plus visiting a chocolate museum nearby!
