Still in the midst of the Thingyan Festival, I take a rest day in Kalaymyo, try to get out to a local swimming hole, but get turned back by the vicious holiday traffic. The next day, I follow the Myittha River to where it meets the Chindwin at the town of Kalewa. I end up in Mawlaik

The changes in Myanmar over the past seven years have been remarkable. In late 2007, its military junta was widely condemned for a violent crackdown on protests led by Buddhist monks. Then came Cyclone Nargis. Since those events, the country has seen the release of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest and the decisive victory of her pro-democracy party in a largely free election, the first in a quarter-century. The nation still faces steep challenges, but perceptions are changing. However, it remains to be seen if the country will continue down the democratic path, or if the military will retain their self-interested grip on power.
