10 - TANZANIA. Lake Tanganyika from MV Liemba
The MV Liemba is a passenger and cargo ferry built in 1913 that still runs along the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, between the ports of Kigoma, Tanzania and Mpulungu, Zambia.
Lake Tanganyika is an African Great Lake. It is also the world's longest freshwater lake and is divided among four countries -- Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Tanzania and Zambia, with the DRC (45%) and Tanzania (41%) possessing the majority of the lake.

Latest #HerdTracker update: Great Migration Roaming in the Kakesio Area
Safari guide Micheal Thomas captured the great migration roaming in the Kakesio Area, Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Throughout January the Serengeti’s short-grass plains including the northern plains of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area are the place to be.
This is the peak of calving season. The herds move around the area following localised rainfall and are often stretched from an area called Maswa in the west to Gol in the east. It’s a vast area but historically the heart of this area - Kusini and Ndutu – has had good rain and historically focuses the herds. These two areas also host reliably brilliant general games throughout the month, including all the cats.
Travelling to Tanzania during the calving season is a sight to behold and something unique to the region. Get your free Migration Safari Travel Guide sent straight to your inbox:

NGORONGORO CRATER - TANZANIA - GARDEN OF EDEN
Any Northern Safari in Tanzania is likely to end with the piece de la resistance known as the Ngorongoro Crater. This deep calderon of an anicent volcano is located in the Ngorongo Conservation Area. Some consider the crater to be the most remarkable landmark in all of Africa. Like no place on earth it is known for its diverse eco-systems and variety of animal life typical of an African safari.
I turn to Wiki for more detail. The main feature of the Ngorongoro Conservation Authority is the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. The crater, which formed when a large volcano exploded and collapsed on itself two to three million years ago, is 610 metres (2,000 feet) deep and its floor covers 260 square kilometres (100 square miles). Estimates of the height of the original volcano range from 4,500 to 5,800 metres (14,800 to 19,000 feet) high.[10][11][12] The elevation of the crater floor is 1,800 metres (5,900 feet) above sea level. The Crater was voted by Seven Natural Wonders as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa in Arusha, Tanzania in February 2013.
Approximately 25,000 large animals, mostly ungulates, live in the crater. Large animals in the crater include the black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis), the local population of which declined from about 108 in 1964-66 to between 11-14 in 1995, the African buffalo or Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer), and the hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius).[19] There also are many other ungulates: the blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) (7,000 estimated in 1994), Grant's zebra (Equus quagga boehmi) (4,000), the common eland (Taurotragus oryx), and Grant's (Nanger granti) and Thomson's gazelles (Eudorcas thomsonii) (3,000).[19] Waterbucks (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) occur mainly near Lerai Forest.[19] There are no topis (Damaliscus lunatus), oribis (Ourebia oribi), or crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus).[9] Impala (Aepyceros melampus) are absent because the open woodland they prefer does not exist.[1] Giraffe also are absent, possibly because of a lack of browse species.[1] Tanzanian cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus raineyii), East African wild dog (Lycaon pictus lupinus), and African leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) are rarely seen.

Best time to visit the Serengeti for the Great Wildebeest Migration.
Next month I have several clients visiting the Serengeti (on the Tanzania side) to see the Great Wildebeest Migration for a 40th birthday party blowout.
Serengeti, derived from the Maasai word siringit, meaning “endless plains” is a most accurate description considering the whole ecosystem stretches over 12,000 square miles (30,000 square kilometers) between Tanzania and Kenya! That Serengeti ecosystem includes Serengeti National Park proper; Ngorongoro Conservation Area; Maswa Game Reserve; Loliondo, Grumeti, and Ikorongo Game Controlled Areas all in northern part of Tanzania; plus the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.
For comparisons sake, Kenya is approximately the size of Texas and Tanzania is almost 1.5 times bigger than Texas. To drive from border to border at the longest/widest part of Texas (about 800 miles) would take 12-14 hours with quick food and bathroom breaks. The Great Wildebeest Migration, however, is about 500 miles long not accounting for random grazing, feeding the newborns, being chased by predators on land and in the water, getting off track, and bathroom breaks.
Now nature is a fickle thing, the Great Migration can start as early as April (which is after the birthing season in the Ndutu region) and as late as June. August, however is peak season and generally considered the best time to witness the most dramatic river crossings from the northern Serengeti into the Masai Mara.
So, considering the length and width of the migration and all the endless plains it encompasses, you could actually miss it if you choose the wrong tour operator. I have a few favorite local companies that I work with to make your stay affordable, so send me a dm if you're interested in going on an African Safari.

Latest #HerdTracker update: Great migration in the Maswa Game Reserve
April is wet in the Serengeti, but you'll love it!
The wildebeest herds move slowly in April through the Serengeti. They leave the Ndutu region and head north-west past Simba Kopjes and toward Moru. These areas are known for their healthy lion and big cat populations. Expect a good dose of interaction between predator and prey.
Safari guide saw a small group remaining in the southern Serengeti while a large group is in the Maswa Game Reserve.
At #HerdTracker, we feel that one of the best ways to experience the Serengeti is via the simplistic extravagance of a colonial-style tented safari camp, several of which move around the Serengeti according to the season. You'll enjoy all the trappings of a luxury safari lodge but in an exclusive, pristine wilderness setting - ideal to soak up all the thrills of the wildebeest migration ➡️

Serengeti Nationaal Park Tanzania 🇹🇿
