Lubec Maine - An Underrated Travel Destination [ep 34]

Situated on the US/Canadian border, Lubec Maine is the Easternmost village in the contiguous US. With it's rich history, charming coastal setting, and rugged natural beauty, it's a very quiet and laid back alternative to Acadia National Park.

We spent a week exploring the area and we were honestly sad to leave. A little piece of our hearts were left in Lubec, and we can't wait to go back!

The East Midlands is one of nine official regions of England at the first level of ITL for statistical purposes. It consists of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire (except North and North East Lincolnshire), Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland. The region has an area of 15,627 km2 (6,034 sq mi), with a population over 4.5 million in 2011. The most populous settlements in the region are Derby, Leicester, Lincoln, Mansfield, Northampton and Nottingham. Other notable settlements include Boston, Chesterfield, Corby, Grantham, Hinckley, Kettering, Loughborough, Newark-on-Trent, Skegness, Wellingborough, and Worksop.

Relative proximity to both London and the Northern Powerhouse cities, as well as its position on the national motorway and trunk road networks help the East Midlands to thrive as an economic hub.

With a sufficiency-level world city ranking, Nottingham is the only settlement in the region to be classified by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network.

The region is primarily served by East Midlands Airport, which lies between Derby, Leicester and Nottingham. The highest point at 636 m (2,087 ft) is Kinder Scout, in the Peak District of the southern Pennines in northwest Derbyshire near Glossop. Other hilly areas of 95 to 280 m (312 to 919 ft) in altitude, together with lakes and reservoirs, rise in and around the Charnwood Forest north of Peterborough, Leicester, and in the Lincolnshire Wolds.[citation needed]

The region's major rivers, the Nene, the Soar, the Trent, and the Welland, flow in a northeasterly direction towards the Humber and the Wash. The Derwent, conversely, rises in the High Peak before flowing south to join the Trent some 2 miles (3 km) before its conflux with the Soar,[citation needed] and the Witham flows in an arch, first north to Lincoln before heading south to the Wash.

The centre of the East Midlands area lies roughly between Bingham, Nottinghamshire and Bottesford, Leicestershire. The geographical centre of England lies in Higham on the Hill in west Leicestershire, close to the boundary between the Leicestershire and Warwickshire. Some 88 per cent of the land is rural in character, although agriculture accounts for less than three per cent of the region's jobs.[citation needed]

Lincolnshire is the only maritime county of the six, with a true North Sea coastline of about 30 miles (48 km) due to the protection afforded by Spurn Head and the North Norfolk foreshore.[citation needed] Church Flatts Farm in Coton in the Elms, South Derbyshire, is the furthest place from the sea in the UK (70 miles, 110 km). In April 1936 the first Ordnance Survey trig point was sited at Northamptonshire Cold Ashby in Peterborough The Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts and The Wildlife Trusts are based next to the River Trent and Newark Castle railway station. The National Centre for Earth Observation is at the University of Leicester.

Geology
The region is home to large quantities of limestone, and the East Midlands Oil Province. Charnwood Forest is noted for its abundant levels of volcanic rock, estimated to be approximately 600 million years old.[3]

A quarter of the UK's cement is manufactured in the region, at three sites in Hope and Tunstead in Derbyshire, and Ketton Cement Works in Rutland.[4] Of the aggregates produced in the region, 25 per cent are from Derbyshire and four per cent from Leicestershire. Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire each produce around 30 per cent of the region's sand and gravel output.[5]

Barwell in Leicestershire was the site of Britain's largest meteorite (7 kg, 15 lb) on 24 December 1965. The 2008 Lincolnshire earthquake was 5.2 in magnitude.

See why you should live or own a vacation home in this tranquil town on Cape Cod. Brewster MA It is conveniently located near the center of Cape Cod, with easy access to Cape Cod Bay, Nantucket Sound and the Atlantic beaches of the National Seashore. With an abundance of open space made up of both beaches and forest, it also offers the convenience of being close to lots of shopping in the nearby towns of Orleans and Dennis.

Brewster protects its rural character through its by-laws and sign codes. Over one third of its land is protected, and it boasts the best drinking water on Cape Cod. Established in 1803, the town encompasses approximately twenty three square miles, with 24 ponds larger than 10 acres in size. The year-round population of 9,800 grows to about 25,000 during the summer season.

Located on the bay side, this town is known for its many beaches with vast tidal flats which make it a beachcomber’s paradise. It is also home to Nickerson State Park – the Cape’s largest state forest where there are fresh water ponds for swimming and canoeing, as well as hiking and biking trails. The Cape Cod Rail Trail runs through Brewster and links up to Nickerson’s trail network. It also features two renowned golf courses: the Ocean Edge Golf Club – the Cape’s only Nicklaus Design course, and the Captains Golf Course – the Cape’s premier public golf course facility. It is also home to the herring run at Stony Brook Grist Mill (take a look at our Stony Brook Grist Mill video) , the playground at Drummer Boy Park, the fabulous Brewster Ladies Library, and the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History with its 400 acres of bayside nature trails.

Martha's Vineyard (Wampanoag: Noepe; often simply called The Vineyard) is an island located south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts in the United States that is known for being an affluent summer colony. Martha's Vineyard includes the smaller adjacent Chappaquiddick Island, which is usually connected to the Vineyard, though storms and hurricanes have separated them, as in 2007. It is the 58th largest island in the United States, with a land area of about 96 square miles (250 km2), and the third-largest on the East Coast of the United States, after Long Island and Mount Desert Island. Martha's Vineyard constitutes the bulk of Dukes County, Massachusetts, which also includes the Elizabeth Islands and the island of Nomans Land. The Vineyard was home to one of the earliest known deaf communities in the United States; consequently, a sign language, MVSL, was developed on the island, amongst indigenous languages spoken by indigenous peoples of the island. The 2010 census reported a year-round population of 16,535 residents,[6] although the summer population can swell to more than 100,000 people. About 56 percent of the Vineyard's 14,621 homes are seasonally occupied. Martha's Vineyard is primarily known as a summer colony, and it is accessible only by boat and air. However, its year-round population has considerably increased since the 1960s. The island's year-round population increased about a third each decade from 1970 to 2000, for a total of 145 percent or about 3 percent to 4 percent per year (46 percent, 30 percent, and 29 percent in each respective decade). The population of the Vineyard was 14,901 in the 2000 Census and was estimated at 15,582 in 2004. (Dukes County was 14,987 in 2000 and 15,669 in 2004). Dukes County includes the six towns on Martha's Vineyard and Gosnold; it increased by more than 10 percent between 2000 and 2010, according to Census data released in 2011, gaining nearly 1,548 residents. The Island's population increased from 14,987 to 16,535.

Nantucket is an island about 30 miles (50 km) by ferry south from Cape Cod, in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. Together with the small islands of Tuckernuck and Muskeget, it constitutes the Town of Nantucket, and the conterminous Nantucket County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,172. Part of the town is designated the Nantucket CDP, or census-designated place. The region of Surfside on Nantucket is the southernmost settlement in Massachusetts. The name Nantucket is adapted from similar Algonquian names for the island, perhaps meaning faraway land or island or sandy, sterile soil tempting no one.
Nantucket is a tourist destination and summer colony. Due to tourists and seasonal residents, the population of the island increases to at least 50,000 during the summer months. The average sale price for a single-family home was $2.3 million in the first quarter of 2018.

Skunknett River Wildlife Sanctuary, a MA Audubon property.

• One of five Mass Audubon Sanctuaries on Cape Cod (three in Barnstable: Great Marsh, Long Pasture and Sampsons Island);
• There are 147 acres and about one mile of trails;
• Along these tree-lined trails, visitors will witness nature reclaiming former mill sites and explore a fragrant Atlantic White Cedar swampland;
• There are three historic mill sites and abandoned cranberry bogs at this site; in the 19th century Skunknett Brook was dammed for a mill, but the marsh has since recovered. At low tide visitors will see remains of Atlantic White Cedar stumps, a testament to the hardiness of this type of wood;
• The name Skunknett is Algonquin for fishing place for eel (American eels may be seen in the sanctuary’s waterways);
• On the Overlook Trail, walkers will see West Pond and quite possibly black-crowned night-herons, ospreys and migrating ducks;
• Along the narrow Holly Trail (named for the surrounding American hollies), the Trail is the site of a vernal (spring-time) pool.
• The unique wetlands within the Sanctuary are breeding sites for a variety of amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates (many of these depend on temporary bodies of water — such as vernal pools — for their existence. In March and April, visitors will see the central floating island in this pool (otherwise known as a “doughnut” vernal pool, a quaking bog in the middle of a vernal —a disappearing or spring ephemeral — pool. One can also listen for chorusing male wood frogs here at during early springtime.
• Permanent water bodies, such as West Pond, are home to fish, which will consume the amphibious, reptilian and invertebral creatures' eggs and larvae, this these vernal pools are vital;
• Since Skunknett’s three dams were breached, Atlantic White Cedars (increasingly rare along the Atlantic coast), are re-generating along the swamp’s moist edges. Here visitors can see these cedars of varying sizes while enjoying the air redolent of their unique fragrance;
• In 1994, a storm and subsequent flooding blew out the old earthen dams to four ponds here: North, South, West and Mill. Probably some of the ponds had existed, some were man-enhanced. Their waters had been used for 200 years: one use was for a grist mill; a 2004 report to the Town of Barnstable mentions that, “North and South Ponds were dammed in the late 19th C. for stocking with fish. The area was also flooded in part for cranberry bogs;
• Skunknett is listed on the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species program's BioMap 2 as core habitat where two state-listed threatened species dwell: water willow stem borer and scarlet bluets (described by the state as about an inch long with red eyes and an orange body);
• There are also sundews returning, cardinal flowers, rose pogonias, bog orchids, turtleheads, and ladies tresses; Robert Buchsbaum, regional science director for the Audubon Society’s southeast district, suggests that pine barrens buckmoth may be here as well, another protected species. Not to mention the great blue herons that hang out here, with other birds and animals;

In My Footsteps - Cape Cod: South Cape Beach State Park

The 3rd video in the In My Footsteps: Cape Cod series features many Cape Cod natural features in one tremendous location. Located on Great Oak Road in Mashpee South Cape Beach State Park has a long sandy beach but also has ponds, marsh, forest, and trails leading out to the breakwater at Waquoit Bay. It is a gem in the town of Mashpee.

Driving Through the Snowy Berkshires in Western Massachusetts - 2021

Drive with us through the Berkshires mountains in Western Massachusetts! We drive on the I-90 highway, starting near Westfield and ending near Lee in Berkshire County. Along the way, we encountered a sign that told us we were at the highest point on the I-90 east of South Dakota! This video was taken on December 24, 2021.

Bridge of Flowers - Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts

We visited the beautiful Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts on a perfect fall day. The abandoned trolley line bridge was transformed into a garden pathway that the town’s gardeners and volunteers have maintained for more than 80 years. A must see if you are ever in the area!
