Visiting France's Most Dangerous City...

We booked tickets to Marseille only to discover afterwards it's poor reputation for crime and safety. This made us incredibly nervous and the more we researched the more bad we found. After hours of research, I was nearly dreading our trip, but like anywhere we go, we wanted to give Marseille a chance and treat it with caution.

We left Marseille feeling fulfilled, inspired, and sad to go so soon. Going in with such low expectations left us feeling quite appreciative of everything there is to see. The city is old with modern and impressively progressive features and overall the city is a multicultural hub. To us, the city was flowing with art, creativity, and music. People were fashionably dressed, expressive, and incredibly kind to us (even though we don’t speak a word of French).

It’s always important for us to go into places with an open mind, ready to form our own opinions apart from those on the internet. Like any city Marseille has its bad areas, but we are so grateful these didn’t deter us from experiencing everything she has to offer.

Howdy! We're Jenna & Andrew and we create travel vlogs. With this channel we hope to do more than just the typical bucket list. We set out to better understand the culture, language, and most importantly the people of the places we travel to. Our channel is designed to give a unique perspective and knowledge of each country, and our honest and true experience.

The Vieux Port: Heart of the City
No visit to Marseille is complete without a stroll along the Vieux Port (Old Port). This horseshoe-shaped harbor has been the city's lifeblood for centuries, and it's still a hive of activity today. Fishing boats bob alongside sleek yachts, while tourists and locals alike mingle on the docks, soaking up the atmosphere.

Le Panier: Marseille's Historic Heart

Clinging to the hillside above the Vieux Port is Le Panier, Marseille's oldest district. A maze of narrow streets, colorful houses, and hidden squares, Le Panier is a photographer's dream. Get lost in its labyrinthine alleyways, stumble upon tiny art galleries and artisan shops, and soak up the bohemian vibes.

Notre-Dame de la Garde: Protectress of the City

Perched atop a hill overlooking the city, the basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde is a Marseille landmark. Its golden-tiled dome and white stone facade shimmer in the sunlight, and from its terrace, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the entire city, the harbor, and the Mediterranean Sea beyond.

Beyond the City: The Calanques National Park

If you're looking to escape the urban buzz, head to the Calanques National Park, just a short drive from Marseille. This stunning park is home to a series of dramatic limestone cliffs that plunge into turquoise waters, creating a series of hidden coves and inlets. Hike along the cliff tops, swim in the crystal-clear calanques, or kayak into hidden caves.

A Culinary Adventure: From Bouillabaisse to Pastis

Marseille is a foodie paradise, offering a delicious mix of Provençal flavors and Mediterranean influences. Sample the iconic bouillabaisse, a fish stew simmered with saffron and rouille, or tuck into a plate of freshly caught seafood grilled to perfection.
