Touring Small Town Wisconsin: Two Rivers
Touring Small Town Wisconsin: Two Rivers
Welcome to Discover Wisconsin’s mini-series Touring Small Town Wisconsin.
Birthplace of the ice cream sundae. America’s only museum dedicated to wood type. Coast Guard shipwrecks. This (and more) is Two Rivers, Wisconsin.
In this episode, join Eric Paulsen on his visit to the city of Two Rivers. WHOA!! What a view! Seeing the two rivers meeting at Lake Michigan right from his sweet suite at Cobblestone Hotel is as stunning as it gets.
Catch the exclusive interview with hotel owner Rick Carey on why Cobblestone leads the movement in turning the town toward Lake Michigan, as one of the only buildings facing the water. A perfect location to embrace more of the important elements people look for when they travel and where they stay, right in the heart of local food, unique attractions and events, and all easy to walk to. With big city quality, and small town values, it’s no wonder the best getaways begin at Cobblestone - the official hotel chain partner of Discover Wisconsin.
Time to hit the town!
Take a step back in time at Rogers Street Fishing Village & Museum for a tour of when Two Rivers was a major French fishing port. Tours are available year-round. See shipwrecks, Native American artifacts, a 1936 wooden fishing tug, and a 1886 historic lighthouse for yourself at
Taste another piece of history at the Historic Washington House, where the old-time saloon features Berners’ Ice Cream Parlor, commemorating the 1880’s invention of the ice cream sundae.
On to the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum to get a personalized tour from Dennis Ewert, who knows everything there is to know about printing, and why capital letters are called UPPER CASE. A tour filled with a fascinating wide range of printing presses and the wood type blocks that made headlines across the country.
After a full day of sight-seeing, Eric dines at Kurtz's Pub and Deli, a beautiful German restaurant that makes amazing sandwiches and has a rare and wonderful collection of imported beers. How do you drink a yard? According to Eric, lift up, lift out and enjoy!
The weekend isn’t over yet!
Wisconsin's sandiest beaches and beautiful lakeside hiking trails await at Point Beach State Forest. The sand dunes and Rawley Point Lighthouse, which has been around since 1894, makes it an absolutely beautiful morning hike.
Wrapping up the weekend at the coolest store on the lakeshore, famous kite shop Unique Flying Objects. Owner Chow Chong talks about Two River's Annual Kite Festival which draws over 25,000 people to enjoy the breezy beaches. With a store like this, who needs a Pink Floyd concert?
No doubt, Two Rivers is one of the most charming small towns in Wisconsin. Love your small town? We’d love to hear more in the COMMENTS BELOW.

Manitowoc and Two Rivers – From Ship to Shore
In this episode of Discover Wisconsin, Mariah and Eric explore the wonders of Manitowoc and Two Rivers from sunken ship to stunning shore. Eric begins by learning about the history and industry of the rivers that flow through Manitowoc and Two Rivers. After exploring the Rogers Street Fishing Village in Two Rivers, he heads to Burger Boat Company to see what the historic company is up to today. He also meets up with some kayakers to do some paddling on the Manitowoc River.
Both the Manitowoc River and the East and West Twin Rivers eventually flow into Lake Michigan, which offers beauty and exploration above and below the surface. At the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Mariah talks with a marine archaeologist about the shipwrecks in the area, and the different ways visitors can learn about, and access the wrecks. She also joins a group of standup paddle boarders at the Manitowoc Marina and takes in an amazing view of the city from the water.
Back on land, Eric explores the Historic Washington House in Two Rivers, and learns how to make the perfect ice cream sundae in the city where it was invented. We also get to know local producers at Pine River Dairy, who have been manufacturing butter in the area for more than 75 years. Eric then heads to Manitowoc’s Pinecrest Historical Village for their annual Pinecrest Plates event, which brings in local farmers and fantastic food for people to enjoy.
And you can’t visit Manitowoc and Two Rivers without spending time on the coast. Mariah flies a kite on the pristine Neshotah Beach in Two Rivers, wanders the beautiful grounds of West of the Lake Gardens, and goes bird watching at Woodland Dunes Nature Preserve. There is so much beauty to be experienced in Manitowoc and Two Rivers and countless ways to do it – from ship to shore!

Driving Around Downtown Manitowoc, Wisconsin in 4k Video
Filmed on Saturday, May 27 2023, I drive around the small town Manitowoc, WI to see what's happening.
Manitowoc is a city in and the county seat of Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. The city is located on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Manitowoc River.
Manitowoc derived its name from either the Ojibwe word manidoowaak, meaning spirit-spawn(s), or manidoowaak, meaning spirit-wood(s), or manidoowak, meaning spirit-land(s). In the Menominee language, it is called Manetōwak, which means place of the spirits.
The first Europeans in the area were French fur traders who arrived in 1673. The Northwest Fur Company established a trading post in 1795.
In 1835, before the transfer of land from the Menominee Nation to the United States, President Andrew Jackson authorized land sales for the region, drawing the interest of land speculators. William Jones and Louis Fizette were the two first recorded buyers on August 3, 1835. Benjamin Jones, business partner and brother of William, is considered the founder of Manitowoc.
Manitowoc had early involvement in the shipbuilding industry, and during WW2 produced landing craft, tankers, and submarines.
On September 5, 1962, a 20-pound piece of the seven-ton Sputnik 4 crashed on North 8th Street in Manitowoc. A cast was made from the original piece before the Soviets claimed it, and the cast was displayed at the Rahr West Art Museum. A customer in a nearby art gallery jokingly suggested that the city should hold a festival to celebrate the crash. The city held the first Sputnikfest in 2008.
Burger Boat Company, a yacht builder is located in Manitowoc and produces approximately 2–3 yachts each year.
Manitowoc is home to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, and is one endpoint of the ferry route of the SS Badger, which crosses Lake Michigan and connects Manitowoc to Ludington, Michigan.
Phil Coulson of the Marvel Cinematic Universe stated he was born in Manitowoc in the second season of the television show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
As of the census of 2020, the population was 34,626.
The racial makeup of the city was 82.9% White, 5.0% Asian, 2.4% Black or African American, 0.7% Native American, 2.6% from other races, and 6.4% from two or more races. The population was 7.2% Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The median income for a household in the city was $61,454, and the per capita income for the city was $33,257.
About 5.0% of families and 10.7% of the population were below the poverty line. #driving #travel #drivingtour
