The north of Sweden has AMAZING experiences to offer. Everything from dog sledding to viewing the Aurora Borealis, to quirky museums and awesome architecture. On my road trip north I experienced a lot of interesting things - but there were many things that I missed, or were canceled.
This is essentially my list of Top 10 Things That I Couldn't Show You From Lapland.

It was a fun filled vacation with family.
Gallivare was founded in the 17th century. Together with nearby towns Malmberget and Koskullskulle it forms a conurbation with some 15,000 inhabitants. This conurbation is the second northernmost significant urban area of Sweden after Kiruna.
Gällivare is situated at the northern end of the Inlandsbanan railway line, just about 100 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. Gällivare is located in a major iron ore mining region. Adjacent to Gällivare (about five kilometres) is Malmberget, known as a site for iron ore extraction from deep mines by LKAB.

Unser Weg führt vom Sarek-Nationalpark nach Jokkmokk, um unseren Bus endgültig zu reparieren. Obwohl wir hier eine gewillte Werkstatt vorfinden, scheitert es nun am Ersatzteil, was nicht aufzutreiben ist. Dank Thomas seiner Unterstützung wird die benötigte Pumpe aus Deutschland geschickt. In der Zeit bis zur Lieferung fahren wir weiter Richtung Gällivare.
Harsprangsfallet war einst der größte Wasserfall am Stora Luleälven. Durch die Anstauung des Flusses zur Energiegewinnung sieht man heute nur noch eine fast wasserfreie Schlucht. Nahe Porjus stoßen wir auf Easy Elsie - ein britisches Flugzeug, welches 1944 beschädigt im Moor notlanden musste.
In Gällivare sehen wir, wie sich der Erzabbau auf die Ortschaften auswirkt. Der Nachbarort Malmberget verschwindet nach und nach von der Landkarte, Häuser werden abgerissen oder müssen umziehen, manche auch nicht zum ersten Mal, wie das Museumsdorf Kakstan (und Herr Finkelstein). Vom benachbarten Berg Dundret können wir auf die Ortschaften und das Grubenloch schauen.
Die nächsten Tage verbringen wir im Nationalpark Stora Sjöfallet. Ausnahmsweise bescheint uns hier endlich mal wieder die Sonne und wir wandern und fahren mit Fahrrad (das gabs im Laponia Besucherzentrum geborgt) durch die Gegend.
Bevor wir weiter nordwärts fahren, gehts nochmal kurz zurück nach Jokkmokk. Die Pumpe ist geliefert, wird fix eingebaut und wir fahren mit gutem Gefühl nach Kiruna. Das ist unsere letzte Station in Schweden. Wir laufen durch menschenleere Gassen und rüsten uns für die weitere Reise nach Norwegen. Wie es da so ist, kommt im nächsten Teil.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is a result of doing all this myself I’m afraid. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday morning is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips!
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.

A FROZEN PARK | ARBORETUM NORR, UMEÅ, SWEDEN

Arboretum Norr in umå
The word arboretum comes from the latin word for tree: arbor. It is in short a botanical garden containing living collections of woody plants such as trees, bushes and vines.
In the mid 70s the idea to construct the worlds most northern arboretum was born. Ten years later the organisation Stiftelsen Arboretum Norr was founded through a collaboration between between Umeå University, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Umeå Municipality. The organisation now manages three arboreta in northern Sweden.
Our main arboretum is situated 10 km outside of Umeå city in the small village Baggböle. The 16 ha large area is situated right next to the Ume River in a southern slope. There are over 2800 planted trees, bushes and vines growing here divided over nearly 400 taxa (species, subspecies, cultivars etc).
The Campus Arboretum is also located in Umeå, more specifically at the campus area around the building of Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and is managed in collaboration with Skogshögskolans student union. The Arboretum in Gällivare was initially located at Malmberget to test species in a even more northern climate then Umeå. However due to the ore mining taking place there, the ground has become unstable so the arboretum has recently been moved closer to Gällivare city centre.
Världens största träbjörn i Sveg i Härjedalen – Kan den räddas från rivning?
Här bakom mig är den och här har den stått i snart 17 år, som en symbol för Härjedalen och Sveg. Ingen som har passerat Sveg kan väl ha missat den, världens största träbjörn. 13 meter hög och en vikt på 80 ton.
Ingen som har passerat Sveg i Härjedalen kan väl ha undgått at se den.
På senare år har världens största träbjörn haft det riktigt tungt. Den har fått slagsida, riskerat att tappa hakan och inhägnats. Och nu riskerar den rivning.
En räddningsaktion har nu startats och i den gruppen är man övertygade om att björnen kan räddas. Göthe Hammarström från gruppen berättar i videon om träbjörnen och hur den skall räddas.
Jag följer med in i björnen och går ända upp i träbjörnens huvud och där inne lutar det ganska rejält.

Igår kväll/natt åkte jag med en god vän upp till Gällivare för att leverera en tom buss och ta ner en annan till Luleå. Färden gick längs väg 97 upp till Jokkmokk där det blev kisspaus för vovven och glasspaus för oss. Vidare förbi Porjus och upp till Gällivare som strålande i sol strax efter klockan 23.00. ;-)
Efter att ha intagit lite mat i Gällivare styrdes kosan mot Luleå via E10, Morjärv, Töre och sedan E4:an mot Luleå. Vi fick se original midnattssol i Gällivare, några strörenar men annars var det bara en trevlig resa genom Midnattssolens land. :-)
