75 000 h.p. The Biggest Nuclear Icebreaker
For licensing and collabs:
Our magic LUTs and presets for color grading:
This video was shot in the Arctic Ocean in March 2018. For 7 days our crew passed through the Barents Sea to Karsky around the Novaya Zemlya archipelago on the nuclear icebreaker Yamal - we saw the northern lights and polar bears, watched the ships stuck in the ice being towed, and were very cold.
In the video you can see two Russian icebreakers - “50 Years of Victory” and “Yamal” with a capacity of 75,000 horsepower and a distinctive shark mouth, which appeared on it in 1994 during one of the children's humanitarian programs. According to legend, someone suggested drawing a smiling shark mouth on the nose to make it more fun for children. At present, Russia has the only nuclear-powered icebreaker fleet in the world. They are used to provide wiring ships in the ices of the Northern Sea Route in the freezing ports of the Russian Federation, research expeditions, rescue operations and tourist cruises.
In addition to the extreme weather conditions, the shooting was complicated by the fact that the icebreaker was always in motion. And if the drone was flying over the radar tower, the recording file was damaged.

Vasilyevsky Island (Russian: Васи́льевский о́стров, Vasilyevsky Ostrov, V.O.) is an island in St. Petersburg, Russia, bordered by the Bolshaya Neva and Malaya Neva Rivers (in the delta of the Neva River) in the south and northeast, and by the Gulf of Finland in the west. Vasilyevsky Island is separated from Dekabristov Island by the Smolenka River. Together they form the territory of Vasileostrovsky District, an administrative division of Saint Petersburg.
Situated just across the river from the Winter Palace, it constitutes a large portion of the city's historic center. Two of the most famous St. Petersburg bridges, Palace Bridge and Blagoveshchensky Bridge, connect it with the mainland to the south. The Exchange Bridge and Tuchkov Bridge across the Malaya Neva connect it with Petrogradsky Island. Vasilyevsky Island is served by Vasileostrovskaya and Primorskaya stations of Saint Petersburg Metro (Line 3 Spb metro line3.svg). There are plans to build new Metro stations on Vasilyevsky Island by extending Line 4 (the Orange Line) to the Island. In addition, the island is serviced by bus routes and tramway lines.
The easternmost tip of the island, called Strelka (spit, literally Arrow), features a number of museums, including the Old Saint Petersburg Stock Exchange (Bourse) as well as two Rostral columns, and is a popular tourist attraction. The edifices lining the Universitetskaya Embankment along the Bolshaya Neva include the Kunstkamera, Twelve Collegia, Menshikov Palace, Imperial Academy of Sciences, and St. Andrew's Cathedral – all dating from the 18th century. In the island center there is a considerable Museum of electrical transport organised by transport history enthusiasts. It is based at the oldest Vasileostrovsky tram depot. Another recent notable attraction was an animated floating anchored illuminated musical fountain located just off the Spit.[4]
In contrast with the Neva embankments in the historical center, the western part of the island was developed much later, in the late Soviet times, and has mostly typical Soviet apartment blocks. A monument to Vasily, the legendary Peter I's local gunners' battery commander after whom the island may have been named, was opened in 2003.
The principal buildings of Saint Petersburg State University are located on the island and include the Twelve Collegia by Domenico Tresini (1722–44) and the former palace of Peter II of Russia.

ROUTE MAP
00:01 Middle avenue of Vasilievsky Island.
Vasilyevsky Island is the most famous of the St. Petersburg Islands. This is a real city within a city with its own history. Under Peter I, it was planned to create a city center here. Therefore, government buildings, a trade and scientific center appeared on Vasilyevsky Island. A characteristic feature of the island is a peculiar toponymy. Lines instead of streets, where each side of the roadway has its own name.
01:24 Start of the route - Kadetskaya Line street.
This is the first street laid through the island from Malaya to Bolshaya Neva (river). Due to its transit role, the first routes of urban public transport passed along the Kadetskaya line. In the middle of the 19th century, the movement of public carriages opened here.
The basis of this area is Bolshoy, Maly and Sredny avenues, which intersect with street lines that have numbers as names. Until the 70s of the 18th century, channels were located along a number of lines. And when they became shallow, they fell asleep. The word line does not mean the street, but the side of the canal.
08:50 Bolshoy Prospekt of Vasilevsky Island.
The first residential buildings and temples appeared next to the Big Avenue. Most of them have survived to our time.
13:30 University embankment.
14:00 Menshikov Palace 1714.
Various styles are involved in the architecture of the palace: a symmetrical layout and a through vestibule with arcades resemble an Italian palazzo, while the tiles that line the walls of the palace, ceilings and stoves are elements of the Dutch style. Expensive types of wood, antique and modern Italian sculpture, decorative painting and stucco, painted Dutch tiles, tapestry and silk wallpapers are used in interior decoration. Menshikov - the first governor of St. Petersburg.

18:05 St. Petersburg State University.
21:15 The building of the Academy of Sciences 1789.
23:35 Kunstkamera 1734.
The collections of the Kunstkamera reflect the diversity of cultures of the peoples of the Old and New Worlds. The museum presents expositions dedicated to the peoples of America, Africa, China, Japan, Indonesia, Australia, Oceania. Particular attention is drawn to the collection of human deformities stored in jars with alcohol, as well as the collection of dry human preparations, for example: the heart, lungs and others, which are in display cases, under glass.
25:14 Zoological Museum - the oldest zoological museum in Russia.
26:05 Spit of Vasilevsky Island.

Russia St Petersburg Walking Tour | Vasileostrovskiy District Street 8 line
Saint Petersburg City Walking Tour: Vasileostrovskiy District, Street 8 line.
This video is a continuation of a walk along 8 line street in St. Petersburg (Russia) on Vasilievsky Island (Vasileostrovsky District).
Our route will start from Maly Prospekt and end at the Makarov embankment at the old pier.
This area was supposed to become the center of the city. Many famous architects and sculptors worked on the creation of this area. Here is the building of the Twelve Collegia (project by D. Trezzini). At the beginning of the 18th century, it housed 12 colleges, the Senate and the Synod, and now it houses the St. Petersburg State University.
The Menshikov Palace is under construction nearby (today it is one of the branches of the Hermitage). The Academy of Sciences was built according to the project of Quarenghi.
Prince A.D. Menshikov ordered to cut a clearing from his palace in the west, to the Baltic Sea. This glade was named Bolshoy Pershpektiva, and later - Bolshoy Prospekt. The core of the district is made up of Bolshoi, Maly and Sredny avenues, which are intersected by lines of streets with numbers in their names. Until the 70s of the 18th century, the canals were located along different lines. The word line does not mean the street, but the side of the canal.
00:00 Small prospect of Vasilievsky Island, St. Petersburg, Russia.
00:15 Street 8 line.
08:26 Now we will move from Vasilievsky Island to Dekabristov Island.
08:46 Smolenka River.

Raisa R1BIG Mini DXpedition to Abandoned Russian Military FORT TOTLEBEN
Ham Radio portable operation from the mysterious Totleben Fort near St.Petersburg and Kronstadt - this dream came true in the summer of 2020 when I was still working as UB1AOA. This incredible Fort (also called «Pervomaysky») was built in 1910. This place could be sold soon, which would keep us from ever seeing the fort in its current state, preventing us from reflecting on the many wars in which it participated in.
It was a great experience for me, thanks to my friends for organizing the boat transportation, and to photographer Alexei Makarov for his bird's-eye picture.
