10 Safest Small Cities to Live in America

What are the safest small cities to live in the US? Smaller settlements usually have smaller crime rates and vice versa. Thus, while the US is coping with its own fair share of crime in recent years, certain cities in the country have proved to be safer. In this video, we will show you those smaller cities that can give residents some respite from crime and criminality. We’re discussing here the 10 safest small cities to live in America. These cities are among the US 1,278 cities with populations of less than 150,000. The figures we shall be using to illustrate our facts are here based on the FBI crime data in the US for the year 2020. And the crimes to be focused on here are just property and violent crimes.

10. Bergenfield, New Jersey
We begin this with Bergenfield, a borough in Bergen County in New Jersey. The small city with a current estimated population of 27,375 which is one of the best places to live in the state is also one of the safest small cities to live in America. The formal boundaries of the city which is one of the 26 boroughs which were forcefully formed in the county encompass a land area of 2.88 square miles and a water area of 0.01 square miles. According to the most recent FBI data, the combined crime rate in Bergenfield is 354.7 per 100,000 people. That’s about 84.88 percent lower than the national rate of 23.46 per 1,000. It is also 73.79 percent lower than the New Jersey crime rate of 13.54 per 1,000 people.

9. Newtown, Connecticut
The next place is Newtown in Fairfield County, Connecticut. This city is part of the greater Danbury as well as New York metro areas. Founded in 1705 and incorporated in 1711, the city with a population of 27,173 has the formal boundaries of an area of 2.3 square miles. Newtown reports crime rates that are 80 percent lower than the state’s average with 25 or fewer total violent crime incidents. The state's crime rates, in turn, are a lot better than the national average. The combined violent and property crime rate for Newtown is 3.48 per 1,000. A city with these characteristics can’t be counted out of any credible list of 10 safest small cities to live in America.

8. Zionsville, Indiana The next on the list is Zionsville in the state of Indiana. This suburban town in Boone County is located in the extreme southeast area of the county, northwest of Indianapolis. With its most recent population figure of 28,357, the town, well known for brick and paved streets, markets, and small shops, is safe. It is promoting itself as a tourist attraction with its village-style area. Though located entirely in Boone County, Zionsville has a total area of 10.3 square miles. More importantly, as one of the 10 safest small cities to live in America, the violent crime rate in this place per 1,000 people is 0.46 while the rate of property crime is 2.8 per 1,000. Another source puts the combined violent and property crime rate per 1,000 as 3.47.

7. Carmel, New York
Another one of the 10 safest small cities to live in America is Carmel a town in Putnam County. This city in New York is on the southern border of its county. It is approximately 50 miles north of New York City and 10 miles west of Danbury. It has no incorporated villages besides the hamlets of Carmel and Mahopac, each big enough to be considered. As to safety, the violent crime rate in Carmel is 0.33 per 1,000 residents while the property crime rate is 4.16 per 1,000 residents. The unemployment rate here, low enough to repel crimes, is 5.4. Meanwhile, due to the generally safe perceived atmosphere, the recent job growth there is positive. Therefore, the combined violent and property crime rate here is 3.5 per 1,000.

6. Marshfield, Massachusetts
Marshfield is the first of the three Massachusetts cities on this list. This town in Plymouth County on the state's South Shore with a population of 25,825 shares the Green Harbor CDP with the town of Duxbury. Marshfield is the location where Cape Cod Bay meets Massachusetts Bay. With a total area of 31.74 square miles of which 28.46 square miles is land and 3.28 square miles is water, Marshfield’s 4.0 crime rate is incidents for every 1,000 people.
