Raigad Fort (रायगड किल्ला) - Historical Places of Maharashtra

Raigad is a hill fort situated in the Mahad, Raigad district of Maharashtra, India. The Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj built this fort and made his capital in 1674 when he was crowned King of a Maratha Kingdom which later developed into the Maratha Empire eventually covering much of western and central India.

The fort, which rises 820 metres (2,700 ft) above sea level, is located in the Sahyadri mountain range. There are approximately 1737 steps leading to the fort, though today Raigad Ropeway, an aerial tramway, exists to reach the top of the fort in 10 minutes. The fort was looted and destroyed by the British after its capture in 1818.

Raigad Fort holds immense historical significance as it served as the capital of the Maratha Empire under the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In 1674, Shivaji was crowned the king of the Maratha kingdom, and Raigad Fort became the center of his administrative and military operations. During his reign, the Maratha Empire flourished and expanded considerably, reaching a significant portion of western and central India.

Raigad fort is 25 kilometers from Mahad town and 125 km away from Pune City. This fort falls under Sahyadri mountain range. It rises 2700 feet above sea level. There are three ways to reach this fort. One is Steps road in which one has to climb nearly 1700 steps to reach the top. Second one is Trekking road which will take to the top and third one is Ropeway which is known as the Raighad Ropeway
This fort is one of the strongest fortresses on the Deccan Plateau, previously known as Rairee or Rairy fort.
This Fort has four main Darwaja’s which are named The Mena Darwaja, Palki Darwaja, Nagarkhana Darwaja and Maha Darwaja. The main structures inside Fort, Comprises of Rani Vasa, Watch towers, Gangasagar Lake, Raj Durbar

Panhalekaji Caves/ Unhavare Hot Water Springs:
Ancient, rock cut caves believed to be more than a thousand years old are a treat to architecture lovers. Hindu and Buddhist sculptures cover the walls. These caves are located on the banks of the Kotjai river. Upstream this river, situated amidst a picturesque valley, you can bathe in natural hot springs. The water is believed to have medicinal value to cure some skin diseases.

Located inside the dense Jungle near a small village called Nanemachi in Mahad, Raigad, this heavenly & spectacular 400 ft high waterfall is regarded as the biggest waterfall in Raigad. We can reach by car to the base village Nanemachi which is around 22 kms from Mahad.

Many constructions and structures on Raigad were built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Chief Engineer was #Hiroji Indulkar. When Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj made it his capital in 1674 upon being crowned the king of the Maratha kingdom, which later developed into the #Maratha Empire, eventually covering much of western and central India.

The fort rises 820 metres (2,700 ft) above base level and 1356 m above sea level in the #Sahyadri mountain range. There are approximately 1,737 steps leading to the fort. The #Raigad Ropeway, an #aerial tramway, reaches 400 meters in height and 750 meters in length, and allows visitors to reach the fort from the ground in only four minutes.
