Horsley Hills | Drive From Bangalore to Horsley Hills | Madanapalle | Andhra Pradesh | Andhra Ooty
Horsley hills is one of the few hills stations in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It has a cool climate which ranges from a minimum of 15 degree C to a maximum of 30 degree C in a region which is very dry and hot. Horsley hills also know Horsley konda (hill in Telugu) or Yenugu (elephant) Mallama Konda before the advent of British was inhabited by tribal of that area. The British in pursuit of their cooler climates founded many hill stations and Horsley hills is one of them. In 1870 the then collector of Chitoor district of Andhra Pradesh William D Horsley built his home at Horsley hills and since then it is being know as Horsley hills. Here his son George Horsley was born and died on the same day. You can find the grave of George Horsley there.
Horsley hills is about 165 km from Bangalore if you take the shortest route possible. We took the Bangalore - Hoskote - (Bangalore - Kadapa highway) - country road via Gownpalli - (Madanapalli - B Kothakora road) - Horsley Hills. Through this route you can save upto 40 Kms in distance. You can also go via Madanapalli which is like a detour. This stretch of Bangalore - Kadapa highway is two way and one should be careful while driving. At many places road constructions are going on. By taking the country road you will not only see beautiful country side scenery but will also avoid interstate tax. We hired a car which cost us around Rs 3800 including bata. These days day bata is 200 and if you cross 9 PM then you will be charged night bata also.
The climb and descend from Horsley hills is nice as typically in hilly places. It gives a good view of rocky hills in the surrounding and plains in the distance. During the ascend you would see a seasonal lake called Gangotri. One of the few water sources at Horsley hills. The best view point at Horsley hill is called Gali Bandalu ( Windy rocks in Telugu) or whispering winds. Its a big area of sloppy rocks giving a nice view of nearby rolling hills and pains in the distance. You can take a stroll, small trek or simply sit and enjoy in peace. This place in contrast is heavy in vegetation and green in cover. Otherwise these is a dry and hot region of Andhra Pradesh. It sits at an elevation of more than 4000 ft. There are few other viewpoints as well. At one of the viewpoint there is a viewing galley and you could see an envelope of green and yellow.
Horsley Hills is a place where you could go to relax and rejuvenate. There are many accommodations including AP tourism hotels, forest rest house etc. This time I also see couple of private hotels and one under construction. Earlier there were only AP Tourism restaurant, now there are a couple of private restaurants also. We had lunch at Hotel Dwarka. It was a decent place and the food was tasty. Horsley hills (or) Horsleykonda (or) Yenugula Mallamma konda is a series of hills in Andhra Pradesh in Madanapalle Taluka of Annamayya District and is about 9 miles from Madanapalle town. W.D Horsley, a British Collector, built his home around 1870 after whom it is named. In contrast to the dry and hot surrounding, this area is well vegetated with cooler climate. This made it attractive as a hill station and tourist spot.
