8 Plovdiv to Velingrad to Sophia in Bulgaria
Istanbul to Plovdiv:
Plovdiv was a very interesting city to visit. But now I am off to treat myself to a special spa retreat in the mineral springs of Velingrad--a short train journey from Plovdiv. After a couple days of pampering, I continued on to Sofia.
A note about this journey:
On November 18, I departed Kutaisi, Georgia on an expected 2 1/2 month winter journey to Pamplona Spain. Most of my travel will be by train because I LOVE trains!
I plan to continue documenting the entire journey across the south of Europe with lots of details so you learn how I travel independently and solo! So stay tuned...

The 'Dyavolski most' is an arch bridge over the Arda River situated in a narrow gorge. It is located 10 km (6.2 mi) from the Bulgarian town of Ardino in the Rhodope Mountains and is part of the ancient road connecting the lowlands of Thrace with the north Aegean Sea coast.
Dyavolski most was rebuilt between 1515 and 1518 by the Bulgarian Master Dimitar under the Ottoman occupation of Bulgaria. The legend has it, the bridge was built by the Romans to link the Aegean Sea and the region of Thrace in Bulgaria. The bridge, the largest and best known of its kind in the Rhodopes, is 56 m long and has three arches, but also features holes with small semicircular arches to read water level. The Dyavolski most has a width of 3.5 m and its main arch is 11.50 m high. A stone parapet, 12 cm in height, is preserved on the sides, and breakwaters are placed opposite the stream.
For the legend, it is said that you can see the devil's head when tilting your head and looking at the reflection of the bridge in the water on a sunny day ...

Who wouldn't want to go on a spontaneous trip to Berlin for the weekend? This weekend break was booked through British Airways in their January sales - life savers. We were quite limited on time but we managed to see all the main attractions through the hop on hop off bus tour.
I absolutely loved Berlin and I would be more than happy to return and see all the other attractions that I sadly missed out on

Велоразходка в Стара планина, с. Батулия / Bike ride in Stara planina, Bulgaria
Подобно на Родопите, Стара планина също крие в пазвата си безбройни възможности за живописни крос-кънтри маршрути. Нашият избор този път беше един доста приятен и лек машрут, от с. Батулия (Софийска област) до махалата Буковец. Маршрутът е кръгов, изцяло по черни пътища и е подходящ за начинаещи колоездачи. Изкачванията и спусканията са плавни и не представляват никаква трудност. Целият маршрут е с дължина около 22 км и може да се направи и в двете посоки. Достъпът е лесен, към с. Батулия се отклонява сфалтов път от главното шосе в Искърското дефиле, а вариант е и да ползвате влак до гара Реброво. Оттам придвижването на самоход до Батулия отнема не повече от 20-ина минутки. Такъв беше и нашият избор.
Държа да спомена, че по време на цялата обиколка в планината си имахме верен другар в лицето на едно добро кученце, което си заслужи накрая обилна почерпка. :)

Like the Rhodopes, Stara Planina also hides in its bosom countless opportunities for picturesque cross-country bike routes. Our choice this time was a very pleasant and easy route, from the village of Batulia (Sofia region) to the neighborhood Bukovets. The route is circular, entirely on dirt roads and is suitable for beginner cyclists. The ascents and descents are smooth and do not present any difficulty. The whole route is about 25 km long and can be done in both directions. The access is easy, a asphalt road deviates from the main road in the Iskar gorge to the village of Batulia. Also an option is to use a train to Rebrovo station. From there, the self-movement to Batulia takes no more than 20 minutes. The train was our choice this day.
I want to say that during the whole tour in the mountains we had a faithful companion in the face of a good puppy, which finally deserved a hearty treat. :)

Está situado na margem direita do Danúbio, em frente à cidade romena de Olteniţa (a que foi ligada através de uma balsa, mas a balsa não funciona mais), no oeste do sul de Dobruja , a 58 km a leste de Rousse e a 62 km Oeste deSilistra . Dzhumaya Mosque (Bulgarian: Джумая джамия) is located in Plovdiv, Plovdiv Province, Bulgaria. Its Turkish name is Hüdavendigâr Camii or Cuma Camii. The mosque is located in the centre of Plovdiv and was built in 1363–1364 on the site of the Sveta Petka Tarnovska Cathedral Church after the conquest of Plovdiv by the Ottoman army. During the reign of Sultan Murad I in the 15th century the old building was demolished and replaced by the modern-day mosque. It was called Ulu Dzhumaya Mosque, or Main Friday Mosque.[1]
The mosque is large, with nine domes and a 33 m × 27 m (108 ft × 89 ft) prayer hall. There is a minaret at the northeast corner of the main façade. Interior wall paintings date to the late 18th to early 19th centuries.[1]
2014 attack
The mosque was attacked by a mob described as hundreds of nationalists, fascists and football hooligans[2] in February 2014.[3][4] 120 were detained after the attack[4] and four received minor sentences.[3] The Grand Mufti of Bulgaria, Mustafa Haci, characterized the attack as a pogrom.[2]
