Maardu - a likable small city with good infrastructure for pedestrians located near Tallinn (15 km)

Maardu is small but a likable city close to Tallinn. I was positively surprised by the wide pedestrian paths, many trees, green areas, and children's playgrounds.

FREE SITES IN TALLINN - SONG FESTIVAL GROUNDS, DISC GOLF, SOVIET STATUES BEHIND MAARJAMÄE PALACE

In this VLOG we continue with our tour of the top sights of Tallinn. There is so much fascinating history to be appreciated, absorbed and hopefully to learn from in this country!

We walk across from The Japanese Gardens in Kadriorg Park (see vlog 16) and head over to the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds which is where the Estonian Song Festival is held every 5 years.

These grounds feature a huge outdoor concert arena built in 1959 and host large concerts and festivals throughout the year. Not only are these grounds spectacular to look at with the ocean as their backdrop, they also have a special place in the hearts of Estonians because it was right there in 1988 that Estonia’s massive, musical demonstration against Soviet rule set the nation on it’s road towards re-independence.

We were able to see how resourceful Estonians can be, as during the Covid-19 pandemic they turned the arena into a drive-in socially distanced cinema. We saw all the cars parked up watching a big screen positioned where the huge choir would normally be placed. Amazing idea!

Whilst stopping for coffee at the Festival Grounds, we learned a bit more about how Estonians love to play disc golf and found out there are so many different types of discs. It seems Craig now really wants to play disc golf!

Afterwards, we make the short walk along Pirita tee over to the Estonian History Museum (Maarjamäe Palace) which although we couldn’t go inside due to closures of museums during the pandemic, the gardens behind the palace are still open and it is always free to take a tour around the Soviet statue graveyard featuring monuments of former Russian leaders such as Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Lenin. These statues were built and placed around the city during Soviet occupation. This area is a stark reminder to everyone that this country has come through great struggles over power and freedom and also that after just 29 years of Estonian independence (since 1991), this freedom should not be taken for granted.

We then take a walk across the ‘Red Carpet’ towards the film museum taking a look at the full layout of the different sections of this museum complex, which are currently closed during the pandemic…

Upcoming videos

Be sure to tune into our next vlog where we finally get to visit inside Maarjamäe Palace, the film museum and stables, as everything re opens post pandemic lockdown!

Maarjamäe Memorial Complex

* We’ll also take you on a tour of one of Estonia’s most controversial Soviet leftovers, the 1960 Obelisk that stands out overlooking Tallinn’s subdistrict Maarjamäe (Maria’s Hill) the Bolshevik memorial to it’s victims during the Russian Civil War.

* Right next to the Obelisk, stands the more recent counter-monument, opened in 2018 which is an incredible monument to Estonia’s victims of communism where 75,000 people (20 percent of Estonia’s population) were killed during the years of Soviet occupation.

map of Estonia [ eesti kaart ]

Estonia (Estonian: Eesti [ˈeːsʲti] (audio speaker iconlisten)), officially the Republic of Estonia (Estonian: Eesti Vabariik), is a country in northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by the Gulf of Finland across from Finland, to the west by the Baltic Sea across from Sweden, to the south by Latvia, and to the east by Lake Peipus and Russia. The territory of Estonia consists of the mainland, the larger islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, and over 2,200 other islands and islets on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea,[9] covering a total area of 47 549 KM². The capital city Tallinn and Tartu are the two largest urban areas of the country. The Estonian language is the autochthonous and the official language of Estonia; it is the first language of the majority of its people, as well as the world's second most spoken Finnic language.

The land of what is now modern Estonia has been inhabited by humans since at least 9,000 BC. Ancient Estonians were one of the last pagan civilisations in Europe to adopt Christianity following the Papal-sanctioned Livonian Crusade in the 13th century. After centuries of successive rule by the Teutonic Order, Denmark, Sweden, and the Russian Empire, a distinct Estonian national identity began to emerge in the mid-19th century. This culminated in the 24 February 1918 Estonian Declaration of Independence from the then warring Russian and German Empires, and, after the end of World War I, in the 1918–1920 War of Independence where Estonians were able to repel the Bolshevik Russian invasion and successfully defended their newborn freedom. Democratic throughout most of the interwar period, Estonia declared neutrality at the outbreak of World War II, however the country was repeatedly contested, invaded and occupied, first by Stalinist Soviet Union in 1940, then by Nazi Germany in 1941, and ultimately reoccupied in 1944 by, and annexed into, the USSR as an administrative subunit (Estonian SSR). After the loss of its de facto independence to the Soviet Union, Estonia's de jure state continuity was preserved by diplomatic representatives and the government-in-exile. Following the bloodless Estonian Singing Revolution of 1988–1990, the nation's de facto independence was restored on 20 August 1991.

Estonia is a developed country, with a high-income advanced economy; ranking very high in the Human Development Index. The sovereign state of Estonia is a democratic unitary parliamentary republic, it is administratively subdivided into 15 maakond (counties). It has a population of 1.3 million, and is one of the least populous members of the European Union, the Eurozone, the OECD, the Schengen Area, and NATO. Estonia has consistently ranked highly in international rankings for quality of life, education, digitalization of public services and the prevalence of technology companies Tallinn Harju 434,562 11 Sillamäe Ida-Viru 12,719

Average elevation reaches only 50 metres (164 ft) and the country's highest point is the Suur Munamägi in the southeast at 318 metres (1,043 ft). There are 3,794 kilometres (2,357 mi) of coastline marked by numerous bays, straits, and inlets. Estonia's number of islands and islets in the Baltic Sea is estimated at some 2,222, and the country has 2,355 including those in lakes. Two of them are large enough to constitute separate counties: Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.[158][159] A small, recent cluster of meteorite craters, the largest of which is called Kaali is found on Saaremaa, Estonia.

Estonia has over 1,400 lakes. Most are very small, with the largest, Lake Peipus, being 3,555 km2 (1,373 sq mi); it is the fifth largest lake in Europe, and also the largest trans-boundary lake in the whole continent. There are many rivers in the country. The longest of them are Võhandu (162 km or 101 mi), Pärnu (144 km or 89 mi), and Põltsamaa (135 km or 84 mi). Estonia has numerous fens and bogs. Forest land covers 50% of Estonia] The most common tree species are pine, spruce and birch.

Phytogeographically, Estonia is shared between the Central European and Eastern European provinces of the Circumboreal Region within the Boreal Kingdom. According to the WWF, the territory of Estonia belongs to the ecoregion of Sarmatic mixed forests

Residential Maardu video

Maardu is a town and a municipality in Harju County, Estonia. It is part of the Tallinn metropolitan area. The town covers an area of 22.76 km² and has a population of 15,332 (as of 1 January 2019).[1]

The Port of Muuga, the largest cargo port in Estonia, is partly located in Maardu.

According to the 2000 Census, the population was 16,738. 61.7% were Russians, 19.9% Estonians, 6.6% Ukrainians, 5.7% Belarusians, 1.5% Tatars, 0.9% Finns, 0.6% Poles, 0.5% Lithuanians, 0.2% Latvians, 0.2% Germans and 0.1% Jews and 1 Cuban. The proportion of Estonians was one of the lowest (if not the lowest) in Central and Western Estonia.

Outside the town (in Maardu village), south of the road to Narva lies Maardu manor, one of Estonia's oldest preserved baroque manor houses. It traces its origins to 1389, but the current building dates from the 1660s with additions made in the 19th century. The landlord of the manor Herman Jensen Bohn in 1739 funded the printing of the first bible printed in Estonian

The best park for active leisure activities in #Estonia - Tondiraba park opening day 29.08.2021

Tondiraba Park will open in Tallinn on Sunday (August 29), a 29 hectare green and recreation area that creates space for both people and nature.

As one of the largest green areas in the city, Tondiraba Park was established on the site of a bog of the same name in Lasnamäe. The park is part of the so-called green corridor of Lasnamäe, which was already planned while developing the district.

Three bridges were built in the eastern part of the park, each of which allows animals and plants to be observed in their natural environment.

Tondiraba Park is also the largest sports and playground in the Baltics, covering over 5.7 hectares. The park has 10 kilometers of trails and footpaths for running and hiking, as well as another 2.5 kilometers of trails for cycling.

There are also dog parks, hammocks, barbecue facilities, and a bicycle service point.
