One hour away from Mangalore near Moodabidri Konaje kallu is a great place for a short hike. A Shiva temple is nestled in caves carved out of a large granite monolith. The temple is about 45 minutes hike from the parking spot. The hike from the temple to the peak is a little treacherous and takes another 30 minutes. The views from the top is breathtaking . A great place for a weekend getaway, must see place near Mangalore if want something more than temples and beaches.

Moodabidri (Kannada: ಮೂಡುಬಿದಿರೆ Mūḍubidire; also called Mudbidri, Moodbidre and Bedra), is a town and taluk in Dakshina Kannada district. It lies 34 km northeast of the district headquarters, Mangalore, in Karnataka, India.These are the tombs of Jain Swamis constructed more than 500 years ago. Located at Kotebagilu on moodbidri - naravi road. The Jain Tombs at Moodbidri are national monuments and archaeological protected site. There are 17 jain tombs and the tallest jain tomb stands about 80 foot. On each tomb, the name it belongs to the swamy is written on granite stone in old kannada language. Those who have interest in archaeology can have a visit here. There is a pond nearby which is also more than 500 years old.
Because of widely grown bamboo in ancient days, this place was named as Moodabidri. Moodabidri comes from two Tulu words, mūḍu east and bidiru bamboo.
Jainism was and still is strongly practised in Moodabidri. The Thousand Pillars Temple (Saavira Kambada Basadi) is a holy shrine for Jains across the country. It also has Guru Basadi which houses the treasured Dhavala text. There are other Basadis: Ammanvara Basadi and Leppada Basadi. There are several Jain temples in Moodbidri.

Trek to Konaja Kallu, hill-top temple near Moodbidri, Karnataka.
This is a twin gigantic granite stone structure at a village called Konaje in Dakshina Kannada District of Karnataka. The place is 7 km away from the Moodbidri Town off the Moodbidri-Naravi Road and 36 km from Mangalore
It is at 346 meters above sea level and 244 meters above the ground level surrounded by 119.28 hectares of reserve forest providing a breathtaking view from the top.
It is also a place of worship, ‘Karnika kshethra' and also has Kalabairava Temple and Mahamayi Gudi at the foot of the stone structures
There is a shrine of Sharadadas Swamiji who has attained ‘Samadhi’ in this place.
To all trekkers visiting this place, I would like to humbly request to refrain eating non-veg food or consuming alcohol or any intoxicating drinks near this place or even before visiting here.
Since it considered a holy place the nearby villagers are very sensitive about this and may take strong objection if they find anyone abusing the above unsaid rule about the food and beverages.
Additionally please keep the surroundings clean because it is a forest zone so the wild animals nearby maybe affected if you litter around.

Moodbidri, is a small town located at a distance of 35 km north-east of Mangalore in Dakshina Kannada district. Moodbidri is known as the 'Jain Kashi' of South India and it is an ancient center of Jain learning.
Moodbidri houses 18 Jain temples (basadis). The oldest of them is the 15th century Chandranatha Basadi, which is also known as the 1000 (Thousand) Pillars temple or 'Savira Kambada basadi'.
This is a large granite temple built in 1430 A.D. The main entrance of the thousand pillar temple, which faces the east, opens onto a wonderful 15 meter tall monolithic pillar called Mahastamba in front of the doorway.
The 2.5 meter tall bronze idol of Lord Chandranatha Swami in the sanctum hall is considered to be very sacred. The pillars of this basadi are decorated with carvings typical of Vijayanagara style.
The temple boasts of a valuable collection of jewel-encrusted metallic images of Jain tirthankaras, and superb monolithic columns in the Jain tradition, each with a different carving.
The Jain Mutt near the main temple entrance has a library protecting some beautiful 12th and 13th century palm leaf manuscripts.
