As Wikipedia says The Măcin Mountains are one of the oldest in Romania, being formed in the second part of the Paleozoic, in the Carboniferous and Permian, during the Hercynian orogeny. The predominant rock is granite. Erosion (caused by the difference of temperature) has created steep slopes, with the aspect of ruins.
They are divided in Culmea Măcinului (the southern part) and Culmea Pricopanului (the northern part). The highest peak is Țuțuiatu (also called Greci), which has a height of 467 meters. Other important peaks are Priopcea Hill (410 m) and Muntele lui Iacob (Iacob's Mountain – 341 m).
Besides the Balkanic and sub-Mediterranean forests, the Măcin Mountains also have a considerable swathe of steppe, making it a delightful site for birds. The area is a staging point for various migratory bird species, especially raptors, who arrive here in autumn.[1] The region is home to species such as European turtle dove, red-rumped swallow, common and isabelline wheatears, ortolan bunting and several others. Măcin Mountains are also the hunting grounds of the long-legged buzzard (Buteo rufinus), one of Europe's largest buzzards. It shares the mountains with other birds of prey such as short-toed eagle, booted eagle, Levant sparrowhawk and saker falcon.

🟠 Cei mai VECHI MUNȚI din ROMÂNIA
🔶️ Munții Măcinului sunt cei mai bătrâni munți din țară și au fost erodați în sute de milioane de ani. Formează singurul parc național care nu se află în Carpați și au o biodiversitate remarcabilă. Pe deasupra acestor munți trec în migrația de toamnă peste 10.000 de răpitoare de zi, cea mai mare diversitate de păsări de pradă în pasaj din Europa.
🔶️ În Munții Măcinului sunt catalogate 24 de habitate prioritare, acestea fiind caracterizate printr-un grad de conservare mare întrucât găzduiesc specii amenințate. Un astfel de habitat unic în lume este pădurea de fag dobrogeană ce formează o insulă relictară aflată la 300 km distanță de cele mai apropiate făgete carpatine.
Biodiversitatea acestui parc național este foarte mare. Pe o arie egală cu jumătate din suprafața Bucureștiului (doar 0,05% din teritoriul țării) întâlnim jumătate din flora României și jumătate dintre speciile de păsări de la noi.
🔶️ Măcinul are aspectul unui deal ce atinge înălțimea maximă în Vârful Țuțuiatu (467 m). Culmea Pricopanului este cea mai spectaculoasă zonă, cu muchii crenelate și formațiuni granitice megalitice spectaculoase.

About Lake Iacobdeal:
In the Măcin mountains, near the town of Turcoaia in Tulcea, Iacobdeal lake stretches over one hectare, a rather wild place of rare beauty. Lake Iacobdeal is a unique place in Romania due to the way it was formed. No running water flows into it and there is no drain. Water appeared in the heart of a former granite quarry of the Italians who settled in these lands 135 years ago.
The lake appeared in 1930, when, following the blasting of one of the galleries, the water from the water table rushed to the surface. Iacobdeal Lake was formed, therefore, after a landslide, and some locals claim that on its bottom there are still stone wagons that could not be removed because of the water that covered everything.
The emerald color of the lake, the clarity of the water and the shape of the caldera, create a unique image, resembling a glacial lake, which makes this place unique. The lake with a depth of approximately 30 m a is surrounded by glazed granite walls, steep banks and it is said that since the water infiltrated quickly, the equipment used in the excavation remained at the bottom of the lake.

Seen from the Danube, they seem only low hills. However, they are a mountainous region.

Măcin Mountains are a mountain range in Tulcea County, in the north of Dobrogea region. Although hardly resembling to a mountain formations given their low height (the highest point being Țuțuiatul Peak at 467m high), they are the oldest mountains in Romania being formed about 300 million years ago.
They are the most arid mountains in Romania having a very hot climate with dry summers and autumns and very cold winters with poor quantities of snow.
Măcin Mountains provide a habitat for approximately 50 percent of species of plants and animals found all over Romania. Here we can find over 1,700 plant species (out of which 72 are protected by law), 181 bird species (37 internationally protected), 47 species of mammals, 1,436 species of insects (out of which over 900 species of butterflies) and a variety of reptiles and amphibians.
